Effects of Carpobrotus edulis Extract on Oxidative Stress and 158N Oligodendrocyte Death

Objective Age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, are associated with oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, and increase the levels of cholesterol auto-oxidation products such as 7β-hydroxycholesterol(7β-OHC). Thus, it is imperative to identify agents that can prevent 7β-OHC-induced side-effects. Methods We evaluated the potential protective effects of Carpobrotus edulis ethanol-water extract(EWe) on murine oligodendrocytes(158 N) cultured in the absence or presence of 7β-OHC(20 μg/mL, 24 h). The cells were incubated with EWe(20-200 μg/mL) 2 h before 7β-OHC treatment. Mitochondrial activity and cell growth were evaluated with the MTT assay. Photometric methods were used to analyze antioxidant enzyme [catalase(CAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)] activities and the generation of lipid and protein oxidation products [malondialdehyde(MDA), conjugated diene(CD), and carbonylated proteins(CPs)]. Results Treatment with 7β-OHC induced cell death and oxidative stress(reflected by alteration in CAT and SOD activities). Overproduction of lipid peroxidation products(MDA and CDs) and CPs was also reported. The cytotoxic effects associated with 7β-OHC were attenuated by 160 μg/mL of EWe of C. edulis. Cell death induced by 7β-OHC treatment was ameliorated, GPx and CAT activities were restored to normal, and MDA, CD, and CP levels were reduced following C. edulis extract treatment. Conclusion These data demonstrate the protective activities of C. edulis EWe against 7β-OHC-induced disequilibrium in the redox status of 158 N cells, indicative of the potential role of this plant extract in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

OBJECTIVE To investigate which history of cardiovascular disease[coronary heart disease(CHD),stroke,or peripheral arterial disease]in a first-degree family member predicts cardiovascular *** We studied a prospective cohort(the Lipid Research Clinics Prevalence Study)from ten primary care centers across North *** primary outcome was cardiovascular mortality,assessed using Cox survival *** There were 8,646 participants(mean age:47.4±12.1 years,46%women,52%of participants with hyperlipidemia)who were followed up for a mean duration of 19.4±4.9 *** were 1,851 deaths(21%),including 852 cardiovascular deaths.A paternal,maternal or sibling history of premature CHD(before 60 years)was present in 26%of participants,of stroke in 27%of participants,and of peripheral arterial disease in 24%of *** adjusting for risk factors(age,sex,systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure,body mass index,smoking,fasting glucose,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides),only a paternal history of premature or any CHD,a maternal history of diabetes mellitus or premature or any CHD,and a sibling history of premature CHD,hypertension,or hyperlipidemia were individually predictive of cardiovascular *** adjusting for risk factors and the mentioned familial factors,only paternal and maternal histories of CHD,espe-cially before 60 years,remained predictive of cardiovascular mortality,with a somewhat higher association for a maternal history[adjusted hazard ratio(aHR)=1.99,95%CI:1.36−2.92,P<0.001 for maternal history of premature CHD;aHR=1.52,95%CI:1.10−2.10,P=0.011 for paternal history of premature CHD].Family history of stroke or peripheral arterial disease did not predict cardiovascular *** history of premature CHD predicted cardiovascular mortality independently of baseline age(<60 years and≥60 years),hypertension,or hyperlipidemia and carried more important prognostic value in men rather than wo-m

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of different intestinal parasitic infections among male primary schoolchildren in Al-Ahsa,Saudi Arabia,and to explore the possible relative socioeconomic, environmental and behavioural sanitary ***:A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed.A total of 1 289 male students aged from 7 to 12 years were selected randomly from 20 urban and 12 rural primary schools by multistage sampling method. An Efficient Machine Learning Based Precoding Algorithm for Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO

Millimeter wave communication works in the 30–300 GHz frequency range,and can obtain a very high bandwidth,which greatly improves the transmission rate of the communication system and becomes one of the key technologies of fifth-generation(5G).The smaller wavelength of the millimeter wave makes it possible to assemble a large number of antennas in a small *** resulting array gain can compensate for the path loss of the millimeter *** this feature,the millimeter wave massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)system uses a large antenna array at the base *** enables the transmission of multiple data streams,making the system have a higher data transmission *** the millimeter wave massive MIMO system,the precoding technology uses the state information of the channel to adjust the transmission strategy at the transmitting end,and the receiving end performs equalization,so that users can better obtain the antenna multiplexing gain and improve the system *** paper proposes an efficient algorithm based on machine learning(ML)for effective system performance in mmwave massive MIMO *** main idea is to optimize the adaptive connection structure to maximize the received signal power of each user and correlate the RF chain and base station *** results show that,the proposed algorithm effectively improved the system performance in terms of spectral efficiency and complexity as compared with existing algorithms.

Assessment of pipeline stability in the Gulf of Mexico during hurricanes using dynamic analysis

Pipelines are the critical link between major offshore oil and gas developments and the mainland. Any inadequate on-bottom stability design could result in disruption and failure, having a devastating impact on the economy and environment. Predicting the stability behavior of offshore pipelines in hurricanes is therefore vital to the assessment of both new design and existing assets. The Gulf of Mexico has a very dense network of pipeline systems constructed on the seabed. During the last two decades, the Gulf of Mexico has experienced a series of strong hurricanes, which have destroyed, disrupted and destabilized many pipelines. This paper first reviews some of these engineering cases. Following that, three case studies are retrospectively simulated using an in-house developed program. The study utilizes the offshore pipeline and hurricane details to conduct a Dynamic Lateral Stability analysis, with the results providing evidence as to the accuracy of the modeling techniques developed.

The application of the guided missile seeker is to provide stability to the sensor’s line of sight toward a target by isolating it from the missile motion and *** main objective of this paper is not only to present the physical modeling of two axes gimbal system but also to improve its performance through using fuzzy logic controlling *** paper is started by deriving the mathematical model for gimbals motion using Newton’s second law,followed by designing the mechanical parts of model using SOLIDWORKS and converted to xml file to connect dc motors and sensors using MATLAB/***,a Mamdani-type fuzzy and a Proportional-Integral-Derivative(PID)controllers were designed using MATLAB *** performance of both controllers was evaluated and tested for different types of input *** simulation results showed that self-tuning fuzzy controller provides better performance,since no overshoot,small steady-state error and small settling time compared to PID controller.

Post-infantile giant cell hepatitis:A single center’s experience over 25 years

BACKGROUND Giant cell hepatitis in the adult population remains very poorly defined with only 100 case reports published in the literature over the last three *** To present our center’s experience in an attempt to learn about the predisposing factors,outcomes and efficacy of proposed therapeutic interventions for giant cell *** A retrospective chart review was conducted through the electronic records of the University of Pittsburgh Medical *** queried 36726 liver biopsy reports from January 1,1991 to December 6,*** search yielded 50 patients who were identified as carrying a definite diagnosis of post-infantile giant cell hepatitis(PIGCH)by *** data collected included demographic information,laboratory data(liver function tests,autoimmune markers)and transplant *** order to better analyze patient characteristics and outcomes,subjects were separated into a non-transplant(native)liver group and a post-liver transplant(allograft)*** The incidence of PIGCH was approximately 0.14%of all biopsies queried in the 25-year *** mean age was 48 years with 66%*** function tests were classified as 38.2%cholestatic,35.3%hepatocellular and 26.5%*** hepatitis was found to be the most prevalent predisposing factor leading to PIGCH constituting 32%of *** consisted mainly of immunosuppression,viral targeted therapy,supportive care and in six cases liver *** The diagnosis of PIGCH remains clinically challenging and requires a high index of suspicion as well as a thorough history,physical examination,serological workup and liver *** of the underlying cause can result in clinical stability in a large number of cases.

This study focuses on the heterogeneity of the middle Miocene syn-rift Belayim nullipore(reefal)marine sequences in the Gulf of Suez and its impacts on reservoir *** sequences consist of coralline algal reef limestones with a highly complex dual-porosity system of primary and secondary porosities of widely varying *** achieve a precise mathematical modeling of these reservoir sequences,a workflow protocol was applied to separate these sequences into a number of hydraulic flow units(HFUs)and reservoir rock types(RRTs).This has been achieved by conducting a conventional core analysis on the nullipore marine *** illustrate the heterogeneity of the nullipore reservoir,the Dykstra-Parsons coefficient(V)has been estimated(V=0.91),indicating an extremely heterogeneous reservoir.A slight to high anisotropy(λ_(k))has been assigned for the studied nullipore sequences.A stratigraphic modified Lorenz plot(SMLP)was applied to define the optimum number of HFUs and barriers/baffles in each of the studied *** the permeability-porosity,reservoir quality index-normalized porosity index(RQI-NPI)and the RQI-flow zone indicator(RQIFZI)plots,the discrete rock types(DRT)and the R35 techniques enable the discrimination of the reservoir sequences into 4 RRTs/*** RRT4 packstone samples are characterized by the best reservoir properties(moderate permeability anisotropy,with a good-to-fair reservoir quality index),whereas the RRT1 mudstone samples have the lowest flow and storage capacities,as well as the tightest reservoir quality.
