Nuclear design of an integrated small modular reactor based on the APR-1400 for RO desalination purposes

The United Arab Emirates lacks conventional water resources and relies primarily on desalination plants powered by fossil fuels to produce fresh *** desalination is a proven technology,cost-competitive,and sustainable option capable of integrating the existing largescale desalination plants to produce both freshwater and ***,Small Modular Reactors(SMRs)are promising designs with advanced simplified configurations and inherent safety *** this study,an Integrated Desalination SMR that produces thermal energy compatible with the capacity of a fossil fuel-powered desalination plant in the UAE was ***,the APR-1400 reactor core was used to investigate two 150 MWthconceptual SMR core designs,core A and core B,based on two-dimensional parameters,radius,and ***,the CASMO-4 lattice code was used to generate homogenized few-group constants for optimized fuel assembly loading ***,to find the best core configuration,SIMULATE-3 was used to calculate the core key physics parameters such as power distribution,reactivity coefficients,and critical boron *** addition,different reflector materials were investigated to compensate for the expected high leakage of the small-sized SMR *** pan shape core B model(142.6132 cm diameter,100 cm height,and radially reflected by Stainless Steel)was selected as the best core configuration based on its calculated physics *** B met the design and safety criteria and indicated low total neutron leakage of 11.60%and flat power distribution with 1.50 power peaking *** to core A,it has a more negative MTC value of-6.93 pcm/°F with lower *** a 2-batch scheme,the fuel is discharged at 42.25 GWd/MTU burnup after a long cycle length of 1.58 *** core B model offers the highest specific power of 36.56 kW/kgU while utilizing the smallest heavy metal mass compared with the SMART and NuScale models.

This study presents a benchmark evaluation of the new ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development/Nuclear Energy Agency Medium 1000 MWth sodium-cooled fast reactor(SFR).The study presented herein covers both SFR core types,i.e.,metallic fueled(MET-1000)and oxide fueled(MOX-1000),simulated using the continuous-energy Monte Carlo Serpent2 *** neutronics performances of the ENDF/B-VIII.0-based simulations were compared mainly to two libraries:ENDF/B-VII.1 and *** comparison includes several neutronics parameters evaluated for the beginning and end of the cycle *** parameters include the effective multiplication factor keff,total effective delayed neutron fraction beff,sodium void reactivity(DqNa),Doppler constant(DqDoppler),and control rod worth(DqCR).In addition,a sensitivity study was used to reveal the major isotope/reaction pairs contributing to the discrepancy observed in the performance of the three libraries using 33 and 44-energy-group structures.

Using Remote Sensing Data to Delineate the Lineaments for Hydrothermal Mineral Prediction in Heqing Area, Northwest Yunnan Province, China

Lineament extraction and analysis is one of the routine work in mapping medium and large areas using remote sensing data, most of which are satellite images. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper （ETM） of 945×1 232 pixels subscene acquired on 21 March 2000 covering the northwestern part of Yunnan Province has been digitally processed using ER Mapper software. This article aims to produce lineament density map that predicts favorable zones for hydrothermal mineral occurrences and quantify spatial associations between the known hydrothermal mineral deposits. In the process of lineament extraction a number of image processing techniques were applied. The extracted lineaments were imported into MapGIS software and a suitable grid of 100 m×100 m was chosen. The Kriging method was used to create the lineament density map of the area. The results show that remote sensing data could be useful to extract the lineaments in the area. These lineaments are closely correlated with the faults obtained through other geological investigation methods. On comparing with field data the lineament-density map identifies two important high prospective zones, where large-scale deposits are already existing. In addition the map highlights unrecognized target areas that require follow up investigation.

Treatment options of inflammatory appendiceal masses in adults

At present, the treatment of choice for uncomplicated acute appendicitis in adults continues to be surgical. The inflammation in acute appendicitis may sometimes be enclosed by the patient's own defense mechanisms, by the formation of an inflammatory phlegmon or a circumscribed abscess. The management of these patients is controversial. Immediate appendectomy may be technically demanding. The exploration often ends up in an ileocecal resection or a right-sided hemicolectomy. Recently, the conditions for conservative management of these patients have changed due to the development of computed tomography and ultrasound, which has improved the diagnosis of enclosed inflammation and made drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses easier. New efficient antibiotics have also given new opportunities for nonsurgical treatment of complicated appendicitis. The traditional management of these patients is nonsurgical treatment followed by interval appendectomy to prevent recurrence. The need for interval appendectomy after successful nonsurgical treatment has recently been questioned because the risk of recurrence is relatively small. After successful nonsurgical treatment of an appendiceal mass, the true diagnosis is uncertain in some cases and an underlying diagnosis of cancer or Crohn's disease may be delayed. This report aims at reviewing the treatment options of patients with enclosed appendiceal inflammation, with emphasis on the success rate of nonsurgical treatment, the need for drainage of abscesses, the risk of undetected serious disease, and the need for interval appendectomy to prevent recurrence.

Structural and electrical investigation of BLT films deposited at different times using electron beam evaporation technique

Thin films Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12)(BLT) were deposited using electron beam evaporation on silicon substrate at several times,also on AlN/Si and SiO_(2)/Si *** films morphology and thickness were measured via scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The crystallography was studied using X-ray diffraction(XRD) technique for films which have a(0010) preferred orientation in all substrate *** capacitance values were contingent on frequency value in C-V *** ferroelectric characterization was investigated for BLT film deposited on isolator layer(SiO_(2) or AlN) for Al/Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12)/SiO_(2)/Si *** effect value varied from 1 V to 3 V depending on the thin films isolator on substrate.

Improved Geological Interpretation Using Landsat TM Data in Lancang-Jinghong Area, Yunnan Province, China

Landsat TM digital spectral data of Lancang Jinghong area (Yunnan P ro vince) has been used for the purpose of geological interpretation. To meet this object, different image processing techniques including selected band color comp osites, principal component analysis and IHS decorrelation stretching are used t o improve the discrimination of different lithological and structural features i n the *** was found that IHS decorrelation stretching images obtained from t he transformation of false color composite 741 (in red, green and blue) prov ided the best results based on the original *** combining the characteristic s of images produced by different approaches and other canonically transformed i mages with available geological data and surface observations, the geological in terpretation could be done with satisfactory degree of accuracy.

GIS Predictive Model for Producing Hydrothermal Gold Potential Map Using Weights of Evidence Approach in Gengma Region, Sanjiang District, China

Gengma region, Sanjiang district is known to have some large-scale gold deposits. GIS predictive model for hydrothermal gold potential was carried out in this region using weights of evidence modeling technique. Datasets used include large-scale hydrothermal gold deposit records, geological, geophysical and remote sensing imagery. Based on the geological and mineral characteristics of areas with known gold occurrences in Sanjiang, several geological features were thought to be indicative of areas with potential for the occurrence of hydrothermal gold deposits. Indicative features were extracted from geoexploration datasets for use as input in the predictive model. The features include host rock lithology, geologic structures, wallrock alteration and associated (volcanic-plutonic) igneous rocks. To determine which of the indicative geological features are important spatial predictors of area with potential for gold deposits, spatial analysis was done through the modeling method. The input maps were buffered and the optimum distance of spatial association for each geological feature was determined by calculating the contrast and studentized contrast. Five feature maps were converted to binary predictor patterns and used as evidential layers for predictive modeling. The binary patterns were integrated in two combinations, each of which consists of four patterns in order to avoid over prediction due to the effect of duplicate features in the two structural evidences. The two produced potential maps define almost similar favorable zones. Areas of intersections between these zones in the two potential maps placed the highest predictive favorable zones in the region.

Repositioning of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors and glucagon like peptide-1 agonists as potential neuroprotective agents

Repositioning of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors and glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists is a breakthrough in the field of neural regeneration research increasing glucagon like peptide-1 bioavailability, hence its neuroprotective activities. In this article, the authors suggest not only crossing blood-brain barrier and neurodegenerative disease as off target for dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors and glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists, but also for ophthalmic preparations for diabetic retinopathy, which may be the latest breakthrough in the field if prepared and used in an appropriate nano-formulation to target the retinal nerves. The relation of neurodegenerative diseases' different mechanisms to the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors and glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists should be further examined in preclinical and clinical settings. The repositioning of already marketed antidiabetic drugs for neurodegenerative diseases should save the high cost of the time-consuming normal drug development process. Drug repositioning is a hot topic as an alternative to molecular target based drug discovery or therapeutic switching. It is a relatively inexpensive pathway due to availability of previous pharmacological and safety data. The glucagon like peptide-1 produced in brain has been linked to enhanced learning and memory functions as a physiologic regulator in central nervous system by restoring insulin signaling. Intranasal administration of all marketed gliptins(or glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists) may show enhanced blood-brain barrier crossing and increased glucagon like peptide-1 levels in the brain after direct crossing of the drug for the olfactory region, targeting the cerebrospinal fluid. Further blood-brain barrier crossing tests may extend dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors' effects beyond the anti-hyperglycemic control to intranasal spray, intranasal powder, or drops targeting the blood-brain barrier and neurodegenerative diseases wit

Increasing efficiency of atriums in hot,arid zones

This research evaluated the efficiency of Atrium in hot,arid regions and investigated the parameters influencing the total energy consumption of an existing shopping mall in Dubai,UAE using the IES-VE energy modeling *** parameters tested included:Roof profile,Roof ventilation,Number of floors,glazing’s Light to Solar Gain ratio(LSG)and the Thermal insulation of the building *** impact of using light sensors was also *** light sensors and the roof’s thermal insulation resulted in the highest reduction of the atrium’s energy,8.5%and 7.5%,*** the number of floors reduced the energy consumption by 5%per unit *** roof profile,external wall’s thermal insulation and height of the atrium resulted in similar energy reductions of 3.5%*** external glazing’s LSG reduced the energy consumption by 3.25%while the roof ventilation resulted in a reduction of 1.3%.The internal glazing’s LSG did not affect the atrium’s total energy *** optimal combination of the parameters studies resulted in an energy reduction of about 20%.Thus,this paper presents the optimal design configuration to reduce the energy consumption of an atrium located in a hot and arid climate.
