AIM:To evaluate the therapeutic uses of Achillea millifolium in diabetic ***:Diabetes was induced bysingle intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared solution of alloxan monohydrate(150 mg·kg.1 body weight) in Wistar rats of150.200 g body *** this study,the aqueous and methanolic extract of Achillea millifolium was studied for its hypoglycemic andhypolipidemic *** rats were divided into several groups,serving as Normal group,Diabetic Control group,Diabetictreated with glibenclamide,and extract treated *** blood serum collected from the various groups of rats was analysed for itsvarious biochemical parameters like glucose,cholesterol,triglycerides,VLDL,SGOT,SGPT and *** the 14th day of the experimentthe rats were scarified and pancreas was collected for histopathological ***:The extracts at dose levels of 250and 500 mg·kg.1 body weight showed significant(P ≤ 0.05) decrease in blood glucose level,TGL,VLDL,cholesterol,SGOT,SGPT,and ALP in diabetic *** extracts prevented the β-cells of pancreas from the cytotoxic effects of Alloxan ***:The results indicate that the extracts as mentioned above are effective in hyperglycemia and can effectively protectagainst other metabolic aberrations caused by alloxan monohydrate.

At the energy regimes close to Planck scales, the usual structure of Lorentz symmetry fails to address certain fundamental issues and eventually breaks down, thus paving the way for an alternative road map. It is thus argued that some subgroup of proper Lorentz group could stand consistent and might possibly help us to circumvent this *** is this subgroup that goes by the name of Very Special Relativity(VSR). Apart from violating rotational symmetry,VSR is believed to preserve the very tenets of special relativity. The gaugeon formalism due to type-I Yokoyama and type-II Izawa are found to be invariant under BRST symmetry. In this paper, we analyze the scope of this invariance in the scheme of VSR. Furthermore, we will obtain VSR modified Lagrangian density using path integral derivation. We will explore the consistency of VSR with regard to these theories.

Water and sediment geochemistry of an urban lake: Implications to weathering and anthropogenic activity

Lakes are sensitive ecosystems and respond quickly to any natural or anthropogenic contamination,particularly in urban areas due to poor planning and mismanagement in urban settlement, encroachment, and anthropogenic pollution. In the current study, water and sediment geochemistry are used along with available time series of geospatial data sets to assess: a) provenance and sources of pollution in the lake sediment and water, b) health risk using various sediment and water quality indices, and c)the key drivers of lake shrinkage. Chemical index of alteration(CIA) of lake sediment is higher(>85) with an atypical cluster of samples(CIA 50-75) towards the south and west of the lake. Further, samples in this cluster show granodioritic provenance which is contrary to the overall mafic provenance of lake sediment. The unusual decrease in CIA in the southern and western side of the lake is attributed to anthropogenically induced fresh sediment in the lake. The results indicate that the sediment is highly polluted by cadmium(Cd) and moderately polluted by copper(Cu), molybdenum(Mo), lead(Pb), and boron(B). Higher Metal Index(MI) values for most of the water samples(>70%) and Hazard Index(HI) for chromium(Cr), nickel(Ni), and cadmium(Cd) towards west and south of the lake reflect the deterioration of water quality in the lake. Moreover, land use change detection attained from available time series of geospatial data sets indicate a drastic transformation of the open water area into other land use classes particularly human settlement, shrinking the lake open water area by 13 km~2 since 1859. The current study will help policy makers and managers to restore and conserve the lake.

Interaction between bovine serum albumin(BSA) and phosphorus heterocycles(PHs) was studied using multispectroscopic techniques. The results indicated the high binding affinity of PHs to BSA as it quenches the intrinsic fluorescence of BSA. The experimental data suggested the fluorescence quenching mechanism between PHs and BSA as a dynamic quenching. From the UV–vis studies, the apparent association constant(K_(app)) was found to be 9.25×10~2, 1.27×10~4and 9.01×10~2L/mol for the interaction of BSA with PH-1, PH-2 and PH-3,respectively. According to the F?rster's non-radiation energy transfer(FRET) theory, the binding distances between BSA and PHs were calculated. The binding distances(r) of PH-1, PH-2 and PH-3 were found to be2.86, 3.03, and 5.12 nm, respectively, indicating energy transfer occurs between BSA and PHs. The binding constants of the PHs obtained from the fluorescence quenching data were found to be decreased with increase of temperature. The negative values of the thermodynamic parameters ΔH, ΔS and ΔG at different temperatures revealed that the binding process is spontaneous; hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interaction were the main force to stabilize the complex. The microenvironment of the protein-binding site was studied by synchronous fluorescence and circular dichroism(CD) techniques and data indicated that the conformation of BSA changed in the presence of PHs. Finally, we studied the BSA-PHs docking using Auto Dock and results suggest that PHs is located in the cleft between the domains of BSA.

The geochemical characteristics of two sections—the Permian–Triassic boundary(PTB) Guryul Ravine section, Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir,India; and the Attargoo section, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India—have been studied in the context of provenance, paleo-weathering, and plate tectonic *** sections represent the siliciclastic sedimentary sequence from the Tethys Himalaya. The PTB siliciclastic sedimentary sequence in these regions primarily consists of sandstones and shales with variable thickness. Present studied sandstones and shales of both sections had chemical index of alteration values between 65 and 74; such values reveal low-to-moderate degree of chemical weathering. The chemical index of weathering in studied samples ranged from 71 to 94, suggesting a minor K-metasomatism effect on these samples. Plagioclase index of alteration in studied sections ranged from 68 to 92, indicating a moderate degree of weathering of plagioclase feldspars. The provenance discriminant function diagram suggests that the detritus involved in the formation of present studied siliciclastic sedimentary rocks fall in quartzose sedimentary and felsic igneous provenances. These sediments were deposited in a passive continental margin plate tectonic setting according to their location on a Si_2 O versus K_2O/Na_2 O tectonic setting diagram.

A composite ion exchange material, polyaniline stannic silicate was prepared under different experimental conditions. Ion exchange material synthesized at pH 1.0 shows an ion exchange capacity 1.6 meq/g for Na+ ions. The exchanger has been characterized on the basis of X-ray and TGA. Ion exchange capacity, pH titration, elution and distribution studies were also carried out to determine the preliminary ion exchange properties of the material. The effect of temperature on the ion exchange capacity of the material at different temperatures has been studied. The sorption behavior of metal ions was also explored in different surfactant mediums. The practical utility of the material was explored by achieving quantitative separation of toxic metal ions in synthetic mixtures.

Polyaniline stannic molybdate—an organic-inorganic composite material, was prepared via sol-gel mixing of organic polymer polyaniline into matrices of inorganic precipitate of stannicmolybdate. The composite material synthesized at pH 1.2 showed an ion exchange capacity 1.8 meq/g for Na+?ions. Ion exchange capacity, pH titration and distribution studies were carried out to determine the preliminary ion exchange properties of the material. The distribution studies showed the selectivity of Hg(II) ions by this material. The effect of temperature on the ion exchange capacity of the material at different temperatures had been studied. The sorption behavior of metal ions was also explored in different surfactant media.
