The reproductive potential of overwintering boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis （Boheman）, females collected from pheromone traps in September, November and January, fed for 1, 3, and 5 weeks on plant pollens, and then provided cotton squares, was determined in the laboratory at 27 ~ I^C, 65% rH, and a photoperiod 13 ： 11 （L ： D） h. Duration of pollen feeding by overwintering boll weevils did not significantly influence egg and feeding punctures, or puncture ratios （egg to total punctures） for any of the three months of parent weevil collections when provided cotton squares on a daily basis. However, punctures and puncture ratios are significantly different when comparing mean data between months of boll weevil collections. When boll weevils were provided with cotton squares daily, the pre-ovipositional periods of female parents captured in September, November and January were 5, 9 and 14 days, respectively. The rate of eggs by females was significantly lower during November and January than September. Female parents collected in September produced a significantly higher percentage of eggs yielding adult progeny than those collected in November and January. Life table parameters indicated that net reproductive rate （ro） of boll weevil females collected in September was 1.2- fold higher than those collected in November and 10.7-fold higher than those collected in January. except for testes size, no differences in male reproductive parameters were observed during the cotton-free period compared with males captured during mid-cotton （June）. The number of oocytes in the ovarioles and the number of ooeytes containing yolk were significantly lower during September, November and January compared with June. The reproductive potential ofoverwintering boll weevil females collected in different months is an important consideration in determining the success of any control strategy.

PUrPOSe: This study was designed to examine the benefits of a Doppler-guided hemorrhoidal artery ligation technique in terms of surgical outcome, functional recovery, and postoperative pain. MeTHODS: Using local, regional, or general anesthesia, 100 patients with symptomatic grades II or III hemorrhoids underwent sonographic identification and suture ligation of six to eight terminal branches of the superior rectal artery above the dentate line. Visual Analog Scales were used for postoperative pain scoring. Surgical and functional outcomes were assessed at 6 weeks and 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. reSULTS: There were 42 (42 percent) males and 58 (58 percent) females (mean age, 42 years; median duration of symptoms, 6.3 years). The mean operative time was 19 minutes. Local anal block combined with intravenous sedation (n = 93) or general or spinal (n = 7) anesthesia was used. Only five were hospitalized overnight. There was no urinary retention, bleeding, or mortality in the immediate postoperative course. The mean pain score decreased from 2.1 at two hours postoperative to 1.3 on the first postoperative day. All patients had a complete functional recovery by the third postoperative day. Ninety-four patients remained asymptomatic after a mean follow-up of six months: four patients required additional surgical excision, and two required rubber band ligations for persistent bleeding. On follow-up, there was no report of incontinence to gas or feces, fecal impaction, or persistent pain. CONCLUSIONS: Our experience indicates that Doppler-guided hemorrhoidal artery ligation is safe and effective and can be performed as an outpatient procedure with local or regional anesthesia and with minimal postoperative pain and early recovery.

Background & Aims: Colonoscopic polypectomy is considered effective for preventing colorectal cancer (CrC), but the incidence of cancer in patients under colonoscopic surveillance has rarely been investigated. We determined the incidence of CrC in patients under colonoscopic surveillance and examined the circumstances and risk factors for CrC and adenoma with high- grade dysplasia. Methods: Patients were drawn from 3 adenoma chemoprevention trials. All underwent baseline colonoscopy with removal of at least one adenoma and were deemed free of remaining lesions. We identified patients subsequently diagnosed with invasive cancer or adenoma with high- grade dysplasia. The timing, location, and outcome of all cases of cancer and high- grade dysplasia identified are described and risks associated with their development explored. results: CrC was diagnosed in 19 of the 2915 patients over a mean follow- up of 3.7 years (incidence, 1.74 cancers/1000 person- years). The cancers were located in all regions of the colon; 10 were at or proximal to the hepatic flexure. Although most of the cancers (84% ) were of early stage, 2 participants died of CrC. Seven patients were diagnosed with adenoma with high- grade dysplasia during follow- up. Older patients and those with a history of more adenomas were at higher risk of being diagnosed with invasive cancer or adenoma with high- grade dysplasia. Conclusions: CrC is diagnosed in a clinically important proportion of patients following complete colonoscopy and polypectomy. More precise and representative estimates of CrC incidence and death among patients undergoing surveillance examinations are needed.
