Patterns of forest composition and their long term environmental drivers in the tropical dry forest transition zone of southern Africa

Background： Tropical dry forests cover less than 13 % of the world＇s tropical forests and their area and biodiversity are declining. In southern Africa, the major threat is increasing population pressure, while drought caused by climate change is a potential threat in the drier transition zones to shrub land. monitoring climate change impacts in these transition zones is difficult as there is inadequate information on forest composition to allow disentanglement from other environmental drivers. methods： This study combined historical and modern forest inventories covering an area of 21,000 km2 in a transition zone in Namibia and Angola to distinguish late succession tree communities, to understand their dependence on site factors, and to detect trends in the forest composition over the last 40 years. Results： The woodlands were dominated by six tree species that represented 84 % of the total basal area and can be referred to as Bdikioea - Pterocarpus woodlands. A boosted regression tree analysis revealed that late succession tree communities are primarily determined by climate and topography. The Schinziophyton rautanenfi and Baikiaea plurijuga communities are common on slightly inclined dune or valley slopes and had the highest basal area （5.5 - 6.2 m^2 ha＆-1）. The Burkea africana - Guibourtia coleosperma and Pterocarpus angolensis - Diafium englerianum communities are typical for the sandy plateaux and have a higher proportion of smaller stems caused by a higher fire frequency. A decrease in overall basal area or a trend of increasing domination by the more drought and cold resilient B. africana community was not confirmed by the historical data, but there were significant decreases in basal area for Ochna pulchra and the valuable fruit tree D. englerianum. Conclusions： The slope communities are more sheltered from fire, frost and drought but are more susceptible to human expansion. Effects of undigested protein-rich ingredients on polarised small intestinal organoid monolayers

Here, we describe the use of monolayers of intestinal epithelial cells derived from intestinal organoids and transcriptomics to investigate the direct effects of dietary protein sources on epithelial function. mechanically dissociated 3 D organoids of mouse duodenum were used to generate a polarized epithelium containing all cell types found in the tissue of origin. The organoid-derived cell monolayers were exposed to 4%(w/v) of ‘undigested(non-hydrolysed)-soluble' fraction of protein sources used as feed ingredients [soybean meal(SBm) and casein], or alternative protein sources(spray dried plasma protein, and yellow meal worm), or controls for 6 h prior to RNA isolation and transcriptomics. All protein sources altered expression of unique biological processes in the epithelial cells. Exposure of intestinal organoids to SBm downregulated expression of retinol and retinoid metabolic processes as well as cholesterol and lipid biosynthetic pathways, consistent with the reported hypotriglyceridaemic effect of soy protein in vivo. These findings support the use of intestinal organoids as models to evaluate complex interactions between dietary ingredients and the intestinal epithelium and highlights some unique host effects of alternative protein sources in animal feed and potentially human food.

In-situ formation of Ti-mo biomaterials by selective laser melting of Ti/mo and Ti/mo_(2)C powder mixtures:A comparative study on microstructure,mechanical and wear performance,and thermal mechanisms

Ti-mo alloys/composites are expected to be the next-generation implant material with low moduli but without toxic/allergic ***,synthesis mechanisms of the Ti-mo biomaterials in Selective Laser melting(SLm)vary according to raw materials and fundamentally influence material performance,due to inhomogeneous chemical compositions and ***,this work provides a comparative study on microstructure,mechanical and wear performance,and underlying thermal mechanisms of two promising Ti-mo biomaterials prepared by SLm but through different synthesis mechanisms to offer scientific understanding for creation of ideal metal *** are(i)Ti-7.5 mo alloys,prepared from a conventional Ti/mo powder mixture,and(ii)Ti-7.5 mo-2.4 Ti C composites,in-situ prepared from Ti/mo_(2)C powder *** reveal that the in-situ Ti-7.5 mo-2.4 Ti C composites made from Ti/mo_(2)C powder mixture by SLm can produce 61.4%moreβphase and extra Ti C precipitates(diameter below 229.6 nm)than the Ti-7.5 mo *** fine Ti C not only contributes to thinner and shorterβcolumnar grains under a large temperature gradient of 51.2 K/μm but also benefits material *** in-situ Ti-7.5 mo-2.4 Ti C composites produce higher yield strength(980.1±29.8 mPa)and ultimate compressive strength(1561.4±39 mPa)than the Ti-7.5 mo alloys,increasing by up to 12.1%.However,the fine Ti C with an aspect ratio of 2.71 dominates an unfavourable rise of elastic modulus to 91.9±2 GPa,44.7%higher than the Ti-7.5 mo alloys,which,nevertheless,is still lower than the modulus of traditional Ti-6 Al-4 ***,Ti C and its homogeneous distribution benefit wear resistance,decreasing the wear rate of the in-situ Ti-7.5 mo-2.4 Ti C composites to 6.98×10^(-4)mm^3 N^(-1)m^(-1),which is 36%lower than that of the Ti-7.5 mo ***,although with higher modulus than the Ti-7.5 mo alloys,the SLm-fabricated in-situ Ti-7.5 mo-2.4 Ti C composites can expect to provide good biomedical applicati

Bacterial volatiles elicit differential olfactory responses in insect species from the same and different trophic levels

水力机械内的水压力脉动常常导致叶片的疲劳破坏及共振,为了研究叶片旋转交互作用引起的流体诱导水压力,基于CFD计算和模型试验开展导叶式喷水推进混流泵叶片交互作用径向力研究.建立了一个闭式的混流泵试验循环系统,在叶轮和泵轴内内置同步旋转测力计测量叶轮上的瞬时力和转矩.通过大量的标定确定试验轴系的动态特性.采用Fluent软件进行非定常数值模拟,并将模拟结果与试验结果进行了比较,分析了产生偏差的原因.结果表明:叶片旋转经过时的轴上径向作用力的频率与工况有关,同时叶片激发的径向力导致叶轮有与轴旋转方向相反旋转的趋势;计算的推进泵外特性与试验吻合较好,同时叶片交互作用径向力的量级也有较好的吻合度;从小流量到大流量工况,计算结果的变化趋势与试验结果一致.

Sensitivity analysis of parameters and contrasting performance of ground filtering algorithms with UAV photogrammetry-based and LiDAR point clouds

most ground filtering algorithms are primarily designed for airborne LiDAR point cloud processing and their successful use in identifying ground points from photogrammetric point clouds remains *** compared six ground filtering algorithms implemented in metashape,ArcGIS,CloudCompare,LAStools,and *** used UAV photogrammetry-based(acquired under leaf-off conditions)and airborne LiDAR(leaf-on)point clouds of the same area to:(i)compare accuracy of generated DTms;(ii)evaluate the effect of vegetation density and terrain slope on filtering accuracy;and(iii)assess which algorithm parameters have the greatest effect on the filtering *** results show that the performance of filtering algorithms was affected by the point cloud type,terrain slope and vegetation *** results were generally better for LiDAR(RmSE 0.13–0.19 m)than for photogrammetric(RmSE 0.19–0.23 m)point *** behavior in varying vegetation and terrain conditions was consistent for LiDAR point ***,when applied on photogrammetric point clouds,the algorithms’behavior was inconsistent,especially in areas of steep slope(except for the Progressive Triangulated Irregular Network in LAStools).Parameters related to the selection of the initial minimum elevation ground points were the most influential in all algorithms and point clouds.
