Determination of the sensible heat effectiveness and pressure loss of a rotary regenerative heat exchanger using CFD

The paper presents a new method to determine the sensible effectiveness and pressure loss of rotary regenerative heat exchangers using computational fluid dynamics(CFD).It is based on CFD simulations of a single thermal wheel microchannel with a small cross-sectional area and thin walls,with cyclic inlet and outlet boundary *** unique measurement set-ups were designed and built for the experimental measurement of the heat exchanger *** different types of thermal wheels were manufactured,measured,and simulated in ANSYS *** wheels achieve an effectiveness greater than 73%under certain(air flow)conditions,which is the minimum effectiveness required by Ecodesign(in the EU).For the examined exchangers,the effectiveness ranges from 66.5%to 83.3%,depending on the boundary conditions and geometric parameters of the *** highest sensible effectiveness is achieved by heat exchangers with the largest heat exchange surface Ac;on the other hand,these wheels have the largest pressure *** paper discusses the use of a simplifiedε-NTU correlation model for the HVAC systems(typically C*=1).The correlation model and CFD results were compared and found to be different from each *** results of the CFD simulation were compared with measurements to prove that the proposed simulation method can predict the behaviour of the real heat exchanger as a *** was demonstrated that the sensible effectiveness and pressure loss of the rotary heat exchanger predicted by the CFD simulations correspond well to the measured values within the measurement uncertainty±1.3%.The proposed method can be used for the comparison of different rotary regenerative heat exchangers before their manufacturing and for verification that they meet the EU Ecodesign requirements set by the current *** reduces the cost of the initial optimisation and testing of new designs.

Improvement of the SST γ-Re_(θt) transition model for flows along a curved hydrofoil

The ability to identify emotional arousal in heterospecific vocalizations may facilitate behaviors that increase survival opportunities. Crucially, this ability may orient inter-species interactions, par- ticularly between humans and other species. Research shows that humans identify emotional arousal in vocalizations across multiple species, such as cats, dogs, and piglets. However, no previ- ous study has addressed humans＂ ability to identify emotional arousal in silver foxes. Here, we adopted low- and high-arousal calls emitted by three strains of silver fox--Tame, Aggressive, and Unselected--in response to human approach. Tame and Aggressive foxes are genetically selected for friendly and attacking behaviors toward humans, respectively. Unselected foxes show aggres- sive and fearful behaviors toward humans. These three strains show similar levels of emotional arousal, but different levels of emotional valence in relation to humans. This emotional information is reflected in the acoustic features of the calls. Our data suggest that humans can identify high- arousal calls of Aggressive and Unselected foxes, but not of Tame foxes. Further analyses revealed that, although within each strain different acoustic parameters affect human accuracy in identifying high-arousal calls, spectral center of gravity, harmonic-to-noise ratio, and F0 best predict humans＇ ability to discriminate high-arousal calls across all strains. Furthermore, we identified in spectral center of gravity and F0 the best predictors for humans＇ absolute ratings of arousal in each call. Implications for research on the adaptive value of inter-specific eavesdropping are discussed.

Estimating Elasticities for Freight Transport Using a Network Model: An Applied Methodological Framework

This paper presents a general framework that can be used to estimate direct and cross elasticities for freight transport using a network model. This methodology combines operational research (network assignments in a geographical information system) with more classical econometrics (multinomial logit choice models). The application of the method to a real-world case is illustrated by a simple model that relies on the generalized cost of transport as the only explanatory variable in the utility function. The methodological framework allows, however, for the implementation of more complex functions. Beside the generalized cost functions for road, rail and inland waterways transport, the network model needs origin-destination matrixes and digitized networks. They are imported from ETIS Plus, a European transport policy information system. A set of direct and cross elasticities is presented. The estimated values are obtained using two methods: the first computes standard elasticities, while the second estimates arc elasticities. Figures are presented for Europe and for a large region around the Benelux countries, where more competition exists between the three modes of interest.

Numerical analysis of the unsteady behavior of cloud cavitation around a hydrofoil based on an improved filter-based model

The unsteady cavitation evolution around the Clark-Y hydrofoil is investigated in this paper, by using an improved filter-base model（FBM） with the density correction method（DCM）. To improve the prediction accuracy, the filter scale is adjusted based on the grid size. The numerical results show that a small filter scale is crucial for the unsteady simulations of the cavity shedding flow. The hybrid method that combines the FBM and the DCM could help to limit the overprediction of the turbulent viscosity in the cavitation region on the wall of the hydrofoil and in the wake. The large value of the maximum density ratio ρ1 /ρv, clip promotes the mass transfer rate between the liquid phase and the vapor phase, which results in a large sheet cavity length and the vapor fraction rise inside the cavity. The cavity patterns predicted by the improved method are verified by the experimental visualizations. The time-average lift, the drag coefficient and the primary oscillating frequency St for the cavitation number σ= 0.8, the angle of attack, α= 8°, at a Reynolds number Re= 7×10^5 are 0.735, 0.115 and 0.183, respectively, and the predicted errors are 3.29%, 3.36% and 8.93%. The typical three stages in one revolution are well-captured, including the initiation of the sheet/attached cavity, the growth toward the trailing edge（TE） with the development of the re-entrant jet flow, and the large scale cloud cavity shedding. It is observed that the cloud cavity shedding flow induces the vortex pairs of the TE vortices in the wake and the shedding vortices. The positive vorticity vortex of the re-entrant jet and the TE vortices interacts and merges with the negative vorticity vortex of the leading edge（LE） cavity to produce the shedding flow.

Application of the AquaCrop model in decision support for optimization of nitrogen fertilizer and water productivity of soybeans
