Assessment of pesticide contaminated sediment using biological response of tropical chironomid,Chironomus javanus Kiffer as biomarker

To investigate the use of a biomarker for assessment of the effects on the tropical chironomid, Chironomus javanus (C. javanus), Kiffer of sediment contaminated with an insecticide (chlorpyrifos).MethodsA wide range of biological responses to the tropical chironomid exposed were measured, including survival, growth rate and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) *** measured median lethal concentration (96 h LC50) of chlorpyrifos to C. javanus was 0.056 (95% CI 0.024-0.124) μg/kg. For sub-chronic levels of chlorpyrifos between 0.001 and 0.25 μg/kg administered for 10 days, the effects on the growth of C. javanus were reduced (larva size, head structure width and dry weight) at the significance level (P nd the effects were concentration dependent. Following exposure to chlorpyrifos at the level of 0.001 μg/kg for 48 and 96 h, the AChE activity in C. javanus was inhibited compared with control samples (P nclusionsThis study demonstrated that C. javanus was sensitive when exposed to chlorpyrifos. This species could serve as a potential biomarker for assessing pesticide contamination at low environmental persistence and provides limited effects data on the sensitivity of tropical biota to contaminants for ecological risk assessment of organophosphate pesticides in the tropical aquatic ecosystem.

Because of its importance as a food source, nemipterus japonicus （Bloch, 1791）（nemipteridae） or Japanese threadfin bream is the best studied of these taxa, and numerous investigations have examined its fisheries, its biology and biochemistry. De- spite such intensive work, the taxonomic status of n. japonicus has never been seriously questioned and it is regarded as a common species, widely distributed throughout the Indo-Westem Pacific Ocean. In fact, Bloch＇s description of the type specimen of ***- ponicus has ambiguous collection data and lacks a designation for the type locality, though it is probably Java. In this paper, DnA barcode results based on COl gene support the existence of two geographically separated lineages of the Japanese threadfin bream, both being an Indian Ocean and western Pacific lineage, with 2.7% sequence divergence, and the results indicate a possible existing of some cryptic species. The two lineages also possess a diagnostic difference in their belly color, with specimens in the South China Sea having a silver belly, while those from the Indian Ocean isolate specimen have a yellow coloration. Based upon new collections from the South China Sea, this species from the western Pacific is morphologically redescribed and its details of DnA barcode diver- sity are shown for the future investigations.

Intraoperative Awareness with Recall Due to Inadvertent Use of Activated Charcoal Filters

A 57-year-old woman underwent abdominal surgery with a subarachnoid block supplemented by “light” general endotracheal anesthesia consisting of a propofol infusion and a sub-MAC concentration of sevoflurane. The previous case in the same operating room had involved a malignant hyperthermia-susceptible patient, and charcoal filters had been placed in the breathing circuit as a precautionary measure. Because it had not been used on the evening beforehand, the circuit with filters was left in situ with a strip of tape indicating that it was clean. The woman’s anesthesiologist assumed that these filters were heat and moisture exchanger filters in an unused circuit and therefore did not remove them. Subsequently, the patient had awareness with intraoperative recall. This case highlights the potential for inadvertent use of activated charcoal filters with potentially catastrophic results. Such unintended utilization of these products likely can be minimized by improved labeling techniques.

Writing at the nanoscale using the desorption of oxygen adatoms from the oxygen-rich MoO2＋x/Mo（110） surface is demonstrated by scanning tunnelling microscopy （STM）. High-temperature oxidation of the Mo（110） surface results in a strained, bulk-like MOO2（010） ultra-thin film with an O-Mo-O trilayer structure. Due to the lattice mismatch between the Mo（110） and the MOO2（010）, the latter consists of well-ordered molybdenum oxide nanorows separated by 2.5 nm. The MoO2（010）/Mo（110） structure is confirmed by STM data and density functional theory calculations. Further oxidation results in the oxygen-rich MoOa^x/Mo（110） surface, which exhibits perfectly aligned double rows of oxygen adatoms, imaged by STM as bright protrusions. These adatoms can be removed from the surface by scanning （or pulsing） at positive sample biases greater than 1.5 V. Tip movement along the surface can be used for controlled lithography （or writing） at the nanoscale, with a minimum feature size of just 3 nm. By moving the STM tip in a predetermined fashion, information can be written and read by applying specific biases between the surface and the tip.

Water quality impact due to excessive nutrients has been extensively studied. In recent years, however, micro-pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and hormonal products used in animal agriculture have added an additional impact to overall water quality. Pharmaceuticals used in the poultry, swine, beef, and dairy industries have been detected in various environmental matrices such as, soil, groundwater and surface water. In this study, 26 surface water samples were collected throughout the Bosque River Watershed （BRW） with samples representing a range of land use conditions and locations of major dairy operations. Samples were analyzed using commercially available Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay test. Of the 26 samples, three samples consistently tested positive for monensin antibiotic with concentration ranging from 0.30 to 3.41 μg/L. These three samples were collected from sites that received varying amount of agriculture wastes （11.7% to 31.3%） and located downstream from sites associated with moderate levels of animal agriculture. The preliminary results suggest that there is a potential for monensin occurrence in the BRW, although initial findings indicate only very low levels.

Background Time-intensity curves derived from microbubble destruction/refilling sequences and recorded using myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) can provide parameters that correlate with coronary blood flow. The response of these parameters to adenosine vasodilatation correlates with coronary flow reserve (CFR) measured by fluorescent microsphere techniques (FMT). Currently, no data exist regarding the effect of physiological variables, such as hypoxia, on the determination of CFR by MCE. The purpose of this study was to define the effects of decreases in blood partial pressure of oxygen (PO_2) on CFR as measured by MCE. Methods Studies were performed in 9 closed chest swine. Low-energy, real-time MCE was performed with commercial instruments in short axis view at papillary muscle level while infusing BR_1 at 30 ml/h. High-energy ultrasound bursts (referred to as FLASH frames) destroyed the bubbles every 15 cardiac cycles, and resultant time-intensity curves derived from these sequences were fitted to the exponential function y = A (1-e -bt) +c, from which the rate of signal rise (b) was obtained. CFR was calculated as the ratio of b values after adenosine infusion to baseline and was obtained during the control period and after decreasing blood PO_2 by giving nitrogen via a respirator to create artificial hypoxic conditions. CFR was independently determined by FMT. Results nitrogen led to significant decreases in mean PO_2, from (120.6±18.9) mmHg to (51.8±15.9) mmHg (Pnosine produced a similar increase in CFR (2.5 fold vs 3.1 fold) as assessed by MCE and FMT during the control period. The decrease in PO_2 post nitrogen resulted in a slight increase in values at rest: 0.46±0.15 to 0.53±0.18 for b and (1.39±0.66) ml·min -1·g -1 to (1.72±0.30) ml·min -1·g -1 for myocardial blood flow (MBF) (both Pn addition, values decreased in response to adenosine using both techniques: 1.05±0.35 to 0.82±0.27 for b and (4.30±3.16) ml·min -1·g -
