Global blue carbon accumulation in tidal wetlands increases with climate change

coastal tidal wetlands produce and accumulate significant amounts of organic carbon(c) that help to mitigate climate change. However, previous data limitations have prevented a robust evaluation of the global rates and mechanisms driving c accumulation. Here, we go beyond recent soil c stock estimates to reveal global tidal wetland c accumulation and predict changes under relative sea level rise, temperature and precipitation. We use data from literature study sites and our new observations spanning wide latitudinal gradients and 20 countries. Globally, tidal wetlands accumulate 53.65(95%cI: 48.52–59.01)Tg c yr-1, which is ～30% of the organic c buried on the ocean floor. Modeling based on current climatic drivers and under projected emissions scenarios revealed a net increase in the global c accumulation by2100. This rapid increase is driven by sea level rise in tidal marshes, and higher temperature and precipitation in mangroves. countries with large areas of coastal wetlands, like Indonesia and Mexico, are more susceptible to tidal wetland c losses under climate change, while regions such as Australia, Brazil, the USA and china will experience a significant c accumulation increase under all projected scenarios.

Geographic simulation models can be used to explore and better understand the geographical environment. Recent advances in geographic and socio-environmental research have led to a dramatic increase in the number of models used for this purpose. Some model repositories provide opportunities for users to explore and apply models,but few provide a general evaluation method for assessing the applicability and recognition of models. In this study,an academic impact evaluation method for models is proposed. Five indices are designed based on their pertinence. The analytical hierarchy process is used to calculate the index weights,and the academic impacts of models are quantified with the weighted sum method. The time range is controlled to evaluate the life-term and annual academic impacts of the models. Some models that met the evaluation criteria from different domains are then evaluated. The results show that the academic impact of a model can be quantified with the proposed method,and the major research areas that models impact are identified.

目的：测量中国汉族人与高加索人的健康成年人口腔黏膜血流参数,比较口腔黏膜血流灌注情况在不同人种间的异同,比较口腔黏膜在上颌与下颌、男性与女性之间的差异性,为口腔种植临床中软组织处理提供参考依据。方法：从德国波恩大学在读学生中招募20名高加索人种学生（男性10例,女性10例,平均年龄25.3岁）和20名中国汉族留学生（男性10例,女性10例,平均年龄28岁）,口腔内设计8个测量点M1~M8,其中于上颌中切牙唇侧黏膜、下颌中切牙唇侧黏膜、上颌腭侧黏膜和颊黏膜各2个点。使用O2c激光多普勒血流仪进行血流参数测量,包括血氧饱和度（saturation oxygen,Sp O2）、平均血红蛋白量（relative amount of hemoglobin,r HB）、单位时间内血流量（flow）、血流速度（velocity）。结果：高加索人种和中国汉族两组之间比较,上颌中切牙血氧饱和度平均值分别为75.6%±8.2%和70.4%±7.6%;颊黏膜血红蛋白量平均值分别为79.9±5.8和83.5±6.6,差异有统计学意义,其余各位点血流参数差异无统计学意义。将测量位点各组之间进行比较：上腭黏膜的血氧饱和度为77.1%±10.9%,平均血红蛋白量为67.8±11.1,单位时间血流量194.1±63.7,相比较其他测量部位差异有统计学意义。男性多个测量位点血氧饱和度普遍低于女性,差异均有统计学意义。结论：口腔中不同解剖部位的黏膜血流灌注情况存在差别,性别之间血红蛋白氧结合能力可能存在差别,并且可能对于软组织愈合能力有一定影响;口腔黏膜血流灌注情况在小样本青年人群中的高加索人种与中国汉族人之间差异无统计学意义。

Accumulation of Mineral Nutrients and Phytochemicals in Lettuce and Tomato Grown in High Tunnel and Open Field

High tunnel production of horticultural food crops is becoming increasingly popular and has a significant impact on their growth, productivity and nutritional quality. The present study examines the effect of high tunnel production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa cv. “Two Star” and “New Red Fire”) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. “celebrity” and “Mountain Fresh”) on their nutritional quality relating to major nutrients and health-promoting phytochemicals. High tunnel environment increased the concentration of N (protein) in both lettuce and tomato relative to the open field cultivation. The accumulation pattern of mineral nutrients in high tunnel was similar in green-leaf and red-leaf lettuce varieties. Lettuce varieties grown in high tunnel had higher accumulation of c, S and Zn relative to those grown in open field. However, high tunnel environment suppressed the accumulation of many micronutrients such as Mg, Fe, cu and Mn in both lettuce varieties but not in tomato. For example, accumulation of Fe was reduced by more than 80% in “Two Star” and by more than 55% in “New Red Fire” under high tunnel. It also suppressed the levels of many health-promoting phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid, chicoric acid, rutin and kaempferol in green-leaf lettuce and gallic acid in red-leaf lettuce. High tunnel environment improved the soil nutrient status but reduced the radiation levels (PAR, UV-A and UV-B) received by the crops. The results show that the high tunnel production has a significant impact on the nutritional quality relating to protein and mineral nutrients in both crops and health-promoting phytochemicals in lettuce.

Glyoxylate Reductase Isoform 1 is Localized in the cytosol and Not Peroxisomes in Plant cells

Glyoxylate reductase （GLYR） is a key enzyme in plant metabolism which catalyzes the detoxification of both photorespiratory glyoxylate and succinic semialdehdye, an intermediate of the γ-aminobutyrate （GABA） pathway. Two isoforms of GLYR exist in plants, GLYR1 and GLYR2, and while GLYR2 is known to be localized in plastids, GLYR1 has been reported to be localized in either peroxisomes or the cytosol. Here, we reappraised the intracellular localization of GLYR1 in Arabidopsis thaliana L. Heynh （ecotype Lansberg erecta） using both transiently-transformed suspension cells and stably-transformed plants, in combination with fluorescence microscopy. The results indicate that GLYR1 is localized exclusively to the cytosol regardless of the species, tissue and/or cell type, or exposure of plants to environmental stresses that would increase flux through the GABA pathway. Moreover, the c-terminal tripeptide sequence of GLYR1, -SRE, despite its resemblance to a type 1 peroxisomal targeting signal, is not sufficient for targeting to peroxisomes. collectively, these results define the cytosol as the intracellular location of GLYR1 and provide not only important insight to the metabolic roles of GLYR1 and the compartmentation of the GABA and photorespiratory pathways in plant cells, but also serve as a useful reference for future studies of proteins proposed to be localized to peroxisomes and/or the cytosol.

Factors Affecting Antibiotic Prescribing for Acute Respiratory Infection by Emergency Physicians

Background: Antibiotics are frequently prescribed for upper acute respiratory tract infections (ARI) in the emergency department. To reduce inappropriate overprescribing, it is necessary to understand factors influencing physicians’ decisions to prescribe antibiotics. Objective: Analyze the judgment policies of emergency physicians to determine factors predicting antibiotic use. Design: Paper case vignette study. Participants: 104 emergency physicians from Wisconsin. Measurements: We used judgment analysis to derive the policies of 104 emergency physicians from their responses to 20 case vignettes. We designed the cases such that each physician’s use of clinical findings and patient factors could be inferred from the decisions they made about each case. Findings were compared to primary care practitioners (PcPs) in colorado responding to the same paper cases to examine differences in factors influencing prescribing among the two groups. Results: The emergency physicians said they would prescribe an antibiotic (yes/no) in 51.4% of cases compared with 44.5% in the colorado study. The majority of emergency physicians gave the greatest weight to duration of illness (51%), followed by temperature (20%) and cough (12%). conclusions: These emergency physicians prescribed antibiotics more frequently than the colorado PcPs. There was little difference in how clinical findings were weighted, suggesting this was not the source of the higher prescription rate among the emergency physicians. The considerable emphasis on duration of illness suggests that this would be a productive area for educational efforts to reduce antibiotic prescribing for ARI in the emergency department.

A recent paper by Boal carvalho et al demonstrates the potential of Pill cam cOLON 2?(Pcc2) as a panenteric investigation in crohn's disease(cD). Our own prospective data in patients with known cD also shows good correlation between Pcc2 and small/large bowel investigations(R = 0.896,P ctively validate the use of Pcc2 in the investigation and monitoring of both small and large bowel cD.
