Environmental landscape determinants of maximum forest canopy height of boreal forests

Aims Canopy height is a key driver of forest biodiversity and carbon *** estimates of canopy height are needed for assess-ing mechanisms relating to ecological patterns and processes of tree height *** global scales forest canopy height patterns are largely controlled by climate,while local variation at fine scales is due to differences in disturbance history and local patterns in envir-onmental *** relative effect of local environmental driv-ers on canopy height is poorly understood partly due to gaps in data on canopy height and methods for examining limiting ***,we used airborne laser scanning(ALS)data on vegetation structure of boreal forests to examine the effects of environmental factors on potential maximum forest canopy *** Relationships between maximum canopy height from ALS meas-ures and environmental variables were examined to assess factors limiting tree ***,we used quantile regression at the 0.90 quantile to relate maximum canopy height with environmental characteristics of climate(*** annual temperature[MAT]and mean annual precipitation),terrain(***)and depth-to-water(DTW)across a 33000 km2 multiple use boreal forest landscape in northeast Alberta,*** Findings Maximum canopy height was positively associated with MAT,ter-rain slope and terrain-derived DTW,collectively explaining 33.2%of the variation in *** strongest explanatory variable was DTW explaining 26%of canopy height variation with peatland forests having naturally shorter maximum canopy heights,but also more sites currently at their maximum potential *** con-trast,the most productive forests(*** to xeric upland forests)had the fewest sites at their potential maximum height,illustrating the effects of long-term forest management,wildfires and general anthropogenic footprints on reducing the extent and abundance of older,taller forest habitat in Alberta’s boreal forest.

Burnout in the emergency department: Randomized controlled trial of an attention-based training program

Background: Burnout(encompassing emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment) in healthcare professionals is a major issue worldwide. Emergency medicine physicians are particularly affected, potentially impacting on quality of care and attrition from the ***: The aim of this study was to apply an attention-based training(ABT) program to reduce burnout among emergency multidisciplinary team(MDT) members from a large urban ***, setting, participants and interventions: Emergency MDT members were randomized to either a notreatment control or an intervention group. Intervention group participants engaged in a four session(4 h/session) ABT program over 7 weeks with a practice target of 20 min twice-daily. Practice adherence was measured using a smart phone application together with a wearable Charge 2 *** outcome measures: The primary outcome was a change in burnout, comprising emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement. The secondary outcomes were changes in other psychological and biometric ***: The ABT program resulted in a significant reduction(P < 0.05; T1 [one week before intervention]vs T3 [follow-up at two months after intervention]) in burnout, specifically, emotional exhaustion, with an effect size(probability of superiority) of 59%. Similar reductions were observed for stress(P < 0.05) and anxiety(P < 0.05). Furthermore, ABT group participants demonstrated significant improvements in heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep as well as an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine ***: This study describes a positive impact of ABT on emergency department staff burnout compared to a no-treatment control group.

Effects of Rations Containing Maggot Concentrate as a Fish Substitute on the Technical and Economic Performance of Large white’s Piglets in Burkina Faso

The study evaluated the effects of rations incorporating maggot concentrate (CA) as a substitute for fishmeal on growth performance and post-weaning piglet’s production costs. To do this, twenty-four (24) weanlings of large white breed were divided into 3 batches of 8 pigs each for a comparative rationing test in 2 phases. Four (04) experimental rations containing CA, two experimental rations (RI10 and RI5-5) for the 1st phase and two others (RII5 and RII10) for the 2nd phase were tested in comparison with 2 control rations RTI10 and RTII5 for the respective Phases I and II. The results show that in all phases piglet growth was continuous from the beginning to the end of each phase. In Phase I, the ADGs of piglets fed RI5-5 (138.64 g), RI10 (131.28 g) and RTI10 (104.78 g) were homogeneous (p > 0.05). The food production costs of one kg of live weight (FCkgLW) of the RI5-5 (671.39 CFAF) and RI10 (690.57 CFAF) rations were significantly lower than the RTI10 (1083.68 CFAF) ration (p 0.05). The FCkgLWs of RII10 (506.73 FCFA), RII5 (583.43 FCFA) and RTII5 (815.53 FCFA) were homogeneous (p > 0.05). The maggot concentrate can be used as a source of animal protein in the feeding of piglets in partial or total substitution for fish. The evaluation of the effects of its use on the quality of carcasses and meat will be necessary.

常常有评论认为,由于中国人的族群中心主义,在非洲的中国人"自我封闭",与当地社会缺乏互动。这样的评论突出了中国人"自我封闭"的特殊性,却没有把在非洲的中国人与其他外来族群相比。我们认为,由于中国经济的半外围特征,当代中国人在非洲并不具有同质性,因此不能一言概之。利用问卷调查、访谈和文献数据,本文分析了中国人在非洲的居住、社会化和语言习得情况,并区分了中国人的两种流动:合同流动和自我流动。除了流动的方式外,影响中国人"本地化"的因素还包括当地政治环境、移民的早晚、语言障碍以及企业规章制度等。我们认为,大多数在非中国人不是自我封闭的,而且与其他在非的亚洲和白人移民相比,本地化程度并不低。

Background/aims: To assess the current level of under-registration of blindne ss and partial sight among patients attending a large teaching hospital, and to determine any risk factors for under-registration. Methods: Medical records of all patients attending general ophthalmology outpatient clinics over a 3 month p eriod were included in a retrospective analysis of registration rates; questionn aire survey assessing the level of knowledge of registration practices among 35 ophthalmologists working in theWest Midlands. Results: 146/2161 (7%) patients w ere eligible for blind or partial sight registration, or were in possession of a completed BD8 form. Of these 146 patients, 65 (45%) were unregistered with 18 fulfilling the criteria for blind and 47 for partially sight. In addition, 32/81 (40%) registered patients appeared to have been inappropriately registered. Pa rtially sighted patients were more likely to be unregistered than blind patients (OR 2.31, 95%CI 1.15 to 4.63, p=0187), and patients from ethnic minorities wer e more than three times more likely to be unregistered than white patients (OR 3 .23, 95%CI 1.56 to 6.65, p=0.0015). A patient with a treatable condition was mo re likely to be unregistered than a patient with an unbeatable condition (OR 4.8 7, 95%CI 2.10 to 11.33, p=0.0002). The overall level of knowledge of registrati on practices among doctors was found to be low and there was no indication of in creasing knowledge with increasing experience. Conclusions: There has been littl e improvement in registration rates of visually impaired patients over the past decade. Ophthalmologists lack the necessary knowledge to cater for visually impa ired patients’needs.

Ebstein Anomaly: A Clinical Case Series among Adolescents in Guinea

Ebstein’s anomaly is a rare congenital heart disease. We report a series of 4 cases of Ebstein’s anomaly discovered in adolescents. The mean age was 13.75 ± 0.96, with 3 boys and one girl. Three were in heart failure. The EKG showed atrial hypertrophy (1 case), right bundle branch block (1 case), Wolff-Parkinson-white (1 case), and atrial fibrillation (1 case). Cardiomegaly was present in all patients with a mean cardiothoracic index of 0.77 ± 0.03. On echocardiography, the mean apical displacement of the tricuspid septal leaflet was 22.5 ± 3.30 mm/m2, the Celermajer index was Grade 2 in 2 patients and Grade 4 in 2 patients. Depletive medical treatment was prescribed to 3 patients. Anticoagulant therapy was initiated in one patient. Two are awaiting surgery. One death was recorded, it was at Grade 4 of the Celermajer index.
