Technical-Economic Performance, Carcass and Meat Quality of COBB500 Broilers Fed Rations Incorporating Mango By-Product Feeds in Ivory Coast (West Africa)

The study evaluated the growth performance and carcass quality of COBB500 broilers fed two experimental rations incorporating feed and mango fine ED10 for a batch of 83 birds, ED20 (batch of 83 birds) in comparison with a commercial control ration CCD (84 birds). For this purpose, 250 day-old chicks of this breed were purchased in Korhogo and transported to Tengréla in Ivory Coast for rearing. The results show that substituting mango provender ans and mango seed flour for maize resulted in rations with costs per kgMS of 215.35FCFA, 2016.93FCFA and 320FCFA for the ED10, ED20 and CCD rations respectively. The production costs per kg of chicken (FCPkgLW) of the CCD ration were significantly higher than those of the ED10 and ED20 (p 0.05). ADGs were significantly different and decreasing from CCD, ED20 to ED10 (p 0.05). Average weights at 42nd day for ED20 and CCD were homogeneous (p > 0.05) and significantly higher than for ED10 (p 0.05). By day 49th the average weight of ED20 had reached and exceeded that of CCD by day 42nd. PSLW, HCW and CCW were significantly different and decreasing from CCW, ED20 to ED10 (p 0.05). Average hot (HCY) and cooled (CCY) carcass yields of ED20 and CCD rations were comparable (p > 0.05) and significantly higher than those of ED10 ration (p = 0.009) and 0.003). Average drumstick and neck weights were significantly higher and lower for CCD, ED20 and ED10 (p 0.05). For all other parts of the cut, the average weights of the CCD ration were significantly higher (p 0.05) than those of the ED20 and ED10 rations, which were homogeneous (p 0.05). The aim of the study was to determine the best food absorbents between wheat, rice and maize bran and palm kernel cake, from a technical and economic point of view, in order to make a better recommandation for their use in the production process of food based on mango by-products (peels, peels + pulp). To this end, series of 18 kg of fresh feed were prepared and spread out in a stall for sun-drying using a randomized Fisher system. Preparations were made using either mango peels (75%) + absorbent (25%) or pulp + mango peels (67%) + sorbent (33%). The results show that mango Peel feed loses more water (WL) with lover production yields (PY), higher mango incorporation rates into dry feed (MRI), longer drying times (UDT) and lower production costs (CPkgPD) than mango peel + pulp. The average DM, MAT, ADF and NDF fiber contents were almost equal to those of mango peels + pulp feed. The average Crude Fiber (CF) (25.13%) and DEp (2839 kcal/kgDM) contents were higher for mango skin feed than for mango skin + pulp feed, at 8.59% and 2536 for MAT and DEp respectively. Mango peels + wheat bran (PSB25) and whole mango (MESB33) feeds recorded the highest and almost equal levels of TCP, NDF and MM. Production costs per kg of feed dry mater (CPkgDM) for feed produced at 25% were on average 33% higher than for whole mango (WM) feed. Excluding mango raw material, palm kernel meal (PK), rice bran (RB), maize bran (MB) and wheat bran (WB) can be ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in terms of cumulative performance of production parameters. Producers can then choose the type of sorbent they wish to use according to this ranking and the local availability of the sorbent. These feeds can be used for both ruminants and monogastrics, but are better suited to ruminant feeding due to their high fiber content.

Effects of Rations Containing Maggot Concentrate as a Fish Substitute on the Technical and Economic Performance of Large White’s Piglets in Burkina Faso

The study evaluated the effects of rations incorporating maggot concentrate (CA) as a substitute for fishmeal on growth performance and post-weaning piglet’s production costs. To do this, twenty-four (24) weanlings of large white breed were divided into 3 batches of 8 pigs each for a comparative rationing test in 2 phases. Four (04) experimental rations containing CA, two experimental rations (RI10 and RI5-5) for the 1st phase and two others (RII5 and RII10) for the 2nd phase were tested in comparison with 2 control rations RTI10 and RTII5 for the respective Phases I and II. The results show that in all phases piglet growth was continuous from the beginning to the end of each phase. In Phase I, the ADGs of piglets fed RI5-5 (138.64 g), RI10 (131.28 g) and RTI10 (104.78 g) were homogeneous (p > 0.05). The food production costs of one kg of live weight (FCkgLW) of the RI5-5 (671.39 CFAF) and RI10 (690.57 CFAF) rations were significantly lower than the RTI10 (1083.68 CFAF) ration (p 0.05). The FCkgLWs of RII10 (506.73 FCFA), RII5 (583.43 FCFA) and RTII5 (815.53 FCFA) were homogeneous (p > 0.05). The maggot concentrate can be used as a source of animal protein in the feeding of piglets in partial or total substitution for fish. The evaluation of the effects of its use on the quality of carcasses and meat will be necessary.

Grisel’s syndrome is a rare complication that is characterized by non-traumatic atlantoaxial subluxation. It is most commonly seen in children after an upper respiratory tract infection or neck surgery, such as an adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy and mastoidectomy. Grisel’s Syndrome is characterized by torticollis and a limited range of motion of the neck with pain. Here the authors report a case of a Malian 5-year-old girl with Grisel’s syndrome following tonsillectomy. The patient’s complaints were fully resolved after 2 weeks of conservative treatment.

Introduction: Myasthenia is a rare and disabling autoimmune disease. Few studies were devoted to this pathology. We report a clinical case of myasthenia in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Point G University Teaching Hospital. Observation: This is a 41-year-old patient of Malian origin, a trader with a history of hemorrhoidectomy in 2011 and familial hypertension, was admitted on August 19, 2014, for muscle weakness, dysphonia, and dysphagia. The disease started 1 year before admission at the department with progressive muscle weakness of the upper limbs aggravated by repetitive movements and spreading to the head “drooping head” and inferior limbs, associated with general fatigue, dysphonia and selective dysphagia for solid foods. The diagnosis of myasthenia was maintained based on the clinical signs such as ptosis, bilateral diplopia, and weakness with lower limbs muscle strength rated at 3/5, and confirmed with confirmatory exams;a positive anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody (RIA), the post-synaptic neuromuscular conduction block at ENMG and the positive neostigmine pharmacological test. The patient received Neostigmine (prostagmine) 0.5 mg one ampoule in IM/day and Prednisone at a dosage of 1 mg/kg/day. The evolution was marked by a moderate improvement of the symptomatology afterward the patient was evacuated to Tunisia on family request where he received a course of immunoglobulin 2 g/kg in 2 days. The evolution in Tunisia was favorable. The patient returned in Mali and death occurred after 2 months in a context of respiratory distress. Conclusion: Myasthenia is a rare but serious disease requiring careful management and monitoring to reduce respiratory complications.

The authors report a case of systemic lupus associated with a composite heterozygosis SC with thalassemic component in a 19-year-old patient hospitalized for anemia and polyarthralgia who has a staturoponderal delay, macular erythematous lesions in butterfly wings on the face and ears, photosensitivity, puffy face, alopecia, pubic and axillary hair loss, scalp dermatophytosis, painful swelling of the interphalangeal joints, wrists and knees. The hemoglobin electrophoresis showed a compound heterozygote SC associated with β thalassemia. Antinuclear antibodies were positive with an anti-Sm positive antibody. Conclusion: The diagnosis of both diseases can be difficult when symptoms are concomitant and look alike.

Introduction: Diabetes, a chronic pathology, is the source of many acute and chronic complications whose treatment requires many daily constraints that can have a serious impact on the quality of life of the patient and his family. The diabetic foot is a real public health problem which is still dominated by a very high lower limb amputation rate even in countries with high socioeconomic status. The diabetic foot classically results from the association of three entangled mechanisms which are neuropathy, arteriopathy and infection. Objectives: To determine the frequency of arterial disease, neuropathy, and other aggravating factors that influence the podiatry risk, and to proceed with the gradation of the podiatry risk. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study concerning the period from July 1 to October 31, 2017, covering all diabetic patients received in consultation and hospitalization in the Internal Medicine Department of the G-University Hospital Center. Results: Our study included 50 patients (35 women for 15 men) out of 95 diabetic patients receiving a frequency of 52.6%, with a sex ratio of 0.42. The average age of our patients was 54.38 ± 13.98 years. Overweight/obesity found in 44% of patients. The average Body Mass Index (BMI) of our patients was 27.16 kg/m2. Patients with diabetes less than 5 years old represented 56% with an average duration of 5.39 ± 5.34 years. The mode of discovery of diabetes was polyuria-polydipsia syndrome in 56% of cases. Type 2 diabetes represented 74% of patients. Among the patients who had performed the HbA1C test, 80.77% were not well balanced. The antecedent of macrosomia in women accounted for 77.1%. Patients who did not know foot hygiene recommendations accounted for 82%. Among the identified podiatry risk factors, diabetic neuropathy accounted for 73.8%, and arterial disease was 32.3%.
