Considering the annual waste in the food sector that occurs throughout the value chain, it is important to establish strategic measures to reduce, value and reintroduce them into the industrial sector. Additionally, the constant search for the development of sustainable strategies to promote safe and healthy products for consumers has gained great prominence. Biowastes from fruits and vegetables present in their composition an excellent source of compounds of interest, which can be reused in different technological routes, providing added value in the industrial, socioeconomic and therapeutic sectors. In particular, the phenolic compounds present in fruit and vegetable biowastes, have bioactive and preservative characteristics that are excellent candidates for the development of natural ingredients that can be substitutes for synthetic preservatives. As the list of identified phenolic compounds is extensive and accessible, the interest in these compounds is gaining more and more prominence, since the use of ingredients of synthetic origin is being delayed by actions harmful to the health of the consumer. Phenolic compounds, in addition to having preservative capacity, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity, are also known for their anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, antiallergic and other biological properties, which increases the interest in their use in functional and nutraceutical preparations. Based on this, this review gathers information on the impacts that the exacerbated generation of fruit and vegetable waste can generate in the environmental, economic and social sectors, as well as lists different ways of reusing these wastes, highlighting the characteristics of phenolic compounds.

Effects of the seasonal variation in the phytochemical composition and bioactivities of the wild halophyte Suaeda fruticosa

Suaeda fruticosa is an edible medicinal species belonging to the Amaranthaceae (Chenopodiaceae) family widely distributed in the Mediterranean regions, especially in Tunisia. This species shoots change their colour from green to red-violet along the different seasons, being an interesting matrix to study for its chemical composition. Therefore, in a ground-breaking study, the hydromethanolic extracts of green and red-violet Tunisian S. fruticosa shoots were profiled for their individual phenolic compounds and betalains by High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with a Diode-Array Detector and Mass Spectrometry by Electrospray Ionization (HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS), and the in vitro antioxidant, antibacterial, and hepatotoxic properties were also assessed. The obtained results revealed that the hydromethanolic extracts contain interesting levels of phenolic compounds especially O-glycosylated and acylated flavonoids, while betacyanins were the main betalain compounds found. As expected, red-violet shoots were richer in phenolic compounds (45.5 ± 0.2 mg/g extract) and betalains (33.3 ± 0.2 mg/g extract) than greener shoots. Flavonoid/betalains rich extracts presented lower EC50 values for ABTS+, DPPH, and TBARS;as also lower MIC values against Gram-positive bacteria. This study showed that the wild halophyte growing in a hard environment, were drought and salinity are dominant, is an important source of flavonoids and betanin, important molecules that can find application in different industries, given the constant demands for natural bioactives and colouring compounds. Overall, these natural compounds may be valorised and further investigated to validate their potential as functional ingredients.

*** Functional foods have a nutritive value and appearance similar to conventional foods,but they bring additional health-promoting effects and/or disease-preventing capabilities when consumed as part of a varied daily *** can occur naturally or be developed through processing or agro-biotechnological ***,modified or not,they must always be safe,without any consideration of a trade-off between health benefit and health risk(Pinela et al.,2016).Nowadays,processing and preserving functional foods,whether solid or liquid,is a major scientific challenge since the factors involved can lead to the degradation of micronutrients and bioactive compounds and affect physicochemical parameters.

Advances in Nucleotide Antiviral Development from Scientific Discovery to Clinical Applications:Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate for Hepatitis B

Exploration of naturally occurring chemical structures for medicinal uses has received significant interest in drug discovery and development research in the past few decades. None have had more success or products of greater clinical efficacy than synthetic analogs of nucleosides and nucleo-tides, especially as antiviral drugs. Nucleos(t)ide antivirals are synthetic analogs of the natural building blocks of DNA or RNA. This review focuses on the developmental path of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), a prodrug of a nucleotide analog and its clinical applications as a first-line antiviral for chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Tenofovir is a potent antiviral compound, but has poor oral availability. The disoproxil fumarate (DF) prodrug moiety greatly enhances intestinal absorption allowing it to become an oral medication. Tenofovir is activated intracellularly, and the incorporation into HBV DNA prevents further elongation thus terminating replication. In patients with CHB, TDF has demonstrated broad, potent and sustained virologic response. Maintenance of viral suppression for up to 5 years resulted in regression of fibrosis and cirrhosis. No tenofovir-resistant HBV variants have been detected in patients after long-term use. The efficacy and safety profiles reported from cohort studies of clinical practices were consistent with those observed in registration trials. Continuous development includes a new oral prodrug, tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF), which has enhanced delivery of tenofovir to target cells compared to TDF.

Analysis of synthetic parameters for coating aluminum powders with phenyltriethoxysilane coupling agent and their effects on powder flow behavior

Though silanization of aluminum powder is currently used to improve its flow properties,for use as an alternative fuel source,there are a wide range of experimental parameters for the process and not all of them have been thoroughly *** this is complete,it is unknown if the process is optimized in terms of time,efficiency,and ***,we report on a study into the effects of changes in humidity,degree of agitation,reaction temperature,and curing time upon the deposition of phenyl triethoxysilane into 20μm(d50)aluminum *** confirm the deposition of the coating via diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron *** then characterize the coated particles using apparent density measurements and Carney flow *** analysis of variance,we find that,of the parameters explored,only changes in cure time and reaction temperature provide meaningful changes to the apparent density,while none of our parameters produced statistically significant changes in Carney flow ***,we conclude that,when optimizing silanization of aluminum particles,environmental control of humidity is unneeded and that the reaction can be run with minimal *** ability to largely ignore these parameters is a benefit to large-scale processing.

Ultrastructural features of the hypopharyngeal glands in the social wasp Polistes versicolor （Hymenoptera： Vespidae）

The wasps of the genus Polistes have been considered the key to understanding the evolution of social behavior in Hymenoptera. Several studies have shown that the development of organized insect societies was accompanied by the evolution of structures like exocrine glands, which became specialized to perform specific functions. This article investigates the ultrastructural and cytochemical features of the hypopharyngeal glands of Polistes versicolor. These glands have been studied in depth in social bees, where they occur only in nurses and produce the royal jelly. Our results＇ revealed that these glands basically did not vary among individuals or between sexes. They are constituted by spherical cells, each with a large nucleus and well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. Secretion vesicles are abundant, but lipid droplets were not observed, indicating that these glands may not have a role in pheromone synthesis. Acid phosphatase was detected in lysosomes, and also flee in the cytosol, but did not seem to be related with cell death. Thus, our results suggest that the hypopharyngeal glands ofP. versicolor may not have a specialized social role, but could produce digestive enzymes.

Assessment of alterability of basalt used for riprap by petrographic examination

All engineering projects consist of several steps, and one of the main tasks is to identify and characterize the most important features of rock types that will be excavated, crushed, or mined for any particular usage purpose, from a single residential building to major works of infrastructure. Laboratory investigation on engineering geology is thus conducted in order to determine the most relevant rock properties when designing structures such as mining shafts, tunnels, buildings, or reservoir dams to be built in sites associated with rocks. A wide range of laboratory tests is available, making the correct choice of test methods greatly relevant to determine the key property for the planned use of the rock. This paper is an illustrative case of laboratory testing of basaltic rocks to be used as riprap in a reservoir dam. It shows the important role of the petrographic study carried out to analyze the distribution pattern of smectite clay minerals. Test results are explained for the assessment of rock alterability, an essential aspect for the selection of the most suitable basalt variety for the envisaged conditions of use.

RE-EXAMINATION OF THE DNA-MEDIATED TRANSFORMATION IN GOLDFISH

DNAs were isolated from goldfish, and the balancer bearing species of newt. They were injected separately into fertilized goldfish eggs. A balancer developed in some newt-DNA injected *** injected goldfish eggs occasionally developed a non-balancer process. These results demonstrated the newt DNA-mediated transfer of the species character from newt to goldfish. The injected DNA was localized by the method of autoradiography using H3-cDNA. Silver grains were found in areas over the colchicine induced metaphase. The incorporation of foreign DNA into chromosomes provides a material basis for genetic transformation.

A hybrid Monte Carlo study of bond-stretching electron–phonon interactions and charge order in BaBiO_(3)

The relationship between electron–phonon(e-ph)interactions and charge-density-wave(CDW)order in the bismuthate family of high-temperature superconductors remains *** address this question using nonperturbative hybrid Monte Carlo calculations for the parent compound BaBiO_(3).Our model includes the Bi 6s and O 2pσorbitals and coupling to the Bi-O bond-stretching branch of optical phonons via modulations of the Bi-O hopping *** simulate three-dimensional clusters of up to 4000 orbitals,with input model parameters taken from ab initio electronic structure calculations and a phonon energyℏΩ0=60 *** results demonstrate that the coupling to the bond-stretching modes is sufficient to reproduce the CDW transition in this system,despite a relatively small dimensionless *** also find that the transition deviates from the weak-coupling Peierls’*** work demonstrates that off-diagonal e-ph interactions in orbital space are vital in establishing the bismuthate phase diagram.

Major regulatory mechanisms involved in sperm motility

The genetic bases and molecular mechanisms involved in the assembly and function of the flagellum components as well as in the regulation of the flagellar movement are not fully understood, especially in humans. There are several causes for sperm immotility, of which some can be avoided and corrected, whereas other are related to genetic defects and deserve full investigation to give a diagnosis to patients. This review was performed after an extensive literature search on the online databases PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. Here, we review the involvement of regulatory pathways responsible for sperm motility, indicating possible causes for sperm immotility. These included the calcium pathway, the cAMP-dependent protein kinase pathway, the importance of kinases and phosphatases, the function of reactive oxygen species, and how the regulation of cell volume and osmolarity are also fundamental components. We then discuss main gene defects associated with specific morphological abnormalities. Finally, we slightly discuss some preventive and treatments approaches to avoid development of conditions that are associated with unspecified sperm immotility. We believe that in the near future, with the development of more powerful techniques, the genetic causes of sperm immotility and the regulatory mechanisms of sperm motility will be better understand, thus enabling to perform a full diagnosis and uncover new therapies.
