A comparison of cyanoacrylate to sutures for wound closure following acoustic transmitter insertion in rainbow trout

Tag retention,wound healing,wound closure,and tagged fish survival are critically important after surgical implantation of acoustic transmitters in *** study compared the use of sutures to cyanoacrylate adhesives and bandages for post-surgery wound *** rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were assigned to one of seven treatments:a control group where fish were only handled,two suture groups(tagged with dummy acoustic transmitters or non-tagged),and four cyanoacrylate adhesive groups(non-tagged,tagged with adipose fin applied as a biological bandage,tagged with anal fin applied,and non-tagged with water-proof bandage).Tag retention was significantly improved in adhesive with anal fin(89%)and tagged suture(78%)treatments when compared to only 11%tag retention in the adhesive with adipose fin *** redness severity increased over the 14 weeks of the study in the tagged and sutured fish,and in those receiving the waterproof *** redness severity was also significantly higher in the waterproof bandage and tagged and sutured treatments than both tagged adhesive treatments at the end of the *** gape was significantly more severe in the adhesive with adipose treatment than in the control,suture,tagged suture,and adhesive treatments,but no significant differences were observed between the adhesive with adipose treatment and the adhesive with anal fin or bandage *** gape never completely closed in the adhesive with adipose group,while both the tagged suture treatment and tagged adhesive with anal treatment wounds completely closed between four-and six-weeks *** results of this study indicate that cyanoacrylate adhesive used in conjunction with anal fin tissue is a suitable post-surgical treatment.

The Global Navigation Satellites Systems （GPS, GLONASS and the future GALILEO） has proven to be a useful tool for precision deformation monitoring applications in structural engineering. For continuous structural deformation monitoring on an epoch-by-epoch basis it is desirable for a measurement system to deliver equal precision in all position components, all the time. However, the quality of GPS position solutions is heavily dependent on the number and geometric distribution of the available satellites. Therefore, the positioning precision varies significantly and is three times less in vertical than horizontal coordinates. This situation becomes worse when the line-of-sight to GPS satellites is obstructed to structures, as it is the case for the big water dams when trying to access other interesting parts than only the crest, reducing the number of visible satellites often to less than four. A new positioning technology developed by Locata Technology Australia, that uses a network of ground-based transceivers that cover a specific area of a water dam with strong signals is becoming part of Leica Geosystems solution. This paper discusses the technology and assesses its suitability for use in structural deformation monitoring applications.

Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 in oesophageal cancers:An observational study

Quantitative optical measurements of deep subwavelength,three-dimensional(3D),nanometric structures with sensitivity to sub-nanometer details address a ubiquitous measurement challenge.A Fourier domain normalization approach is used in the Fourier optical imaging code to simulate the full 3D scattered light field of nominally 15 nm-sized structures,accurately replicating the light field as a function of the focus *** the full 3D light field,nanometer scale details such as a 2 nm thin conformal oxide and nanometer topography are rigorously fitted for features less than one-thirtieth of the wavelength in *** densely packed structures are positioned nearly an order of magnitude closer than the conventional Rayleigh resolution limit and can be measured with sub-nanometer parametric *** approach enables a practical measurement sensitivity to size variations of only a few atoms in size using a high-throughput optical configuration with broad application in measuring nanometric structures and nanoelectronic devices.

Laboratory Driven, Lean-to-Adaptive Prototyping in Parallel for Web Software Project Identification and Application Development in Health Science Research

Clinical research laboratories, bioinformatics core facilities, and health science organizations often rely on heavy planning based software development models to propose, build, and distribute software as a consumable product. Projects in non-agile software life cycles tend to have rigid “plan-design-build” milestones, increasing the amount of time needed for software development completion. Though the classic software development approach is needed for large-scale and organizational projects, clinical research laboratories can expedite software development while maintaining quality by using lean prototyping as a condition of project advancement to a committed adaptive software development cycle. Software projects benefit from an agile methodology due to the active and changing requirements often guided by experimental data driven models. We describe a lean to adaptive method used in parallel with laboratory bench work to develop quality software quickly that meets the requirements of a fast-paced research environment and reducing time to production, providing immediate value to the end user, and limiting unnecessary development practices in favor of results.
