Destructive and Nondestructive Determination of <sup>226</sup>Ra and <sup>228</sup>Ra in Drinking Water by Gamma Spectrometry

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) mandates that the drinking water should be monitored for 226Ra and 228Ra isotopes and establishes the Maximum Contaminant Level of 185 mBq/L (5 pCi·L-1) for the sum. In addition, SDWA regulates the Detection Limit (DL) of 37.0 mBq/L (1 pCi/L) for each isotope. The purpose of this work is to develop a working method for the determination of radium isotopes in drinking water satisfying the regulatory requirements of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by utilizing our extensive experience in low-background gamma spectrometry at this laboratory. Two versions of the method were studied: destructive and non-destructive. Destructive method used the BaSO4 coprecipitation as well as 133Ba tracer for chemical recovery. We have used three gamma spectrometers: low-background 102% and 134% efficient with top muon guards, as well as an ultralow-background 140% efficient with full muon guard. We obtained a range of DLs from 5.3 to 22.6 mBq/L for 226Ra and from 7.4 to 30.4 mBq/L for 228Ra using the destructive method. For non-destructive method, the DL range was 26.0 to 26.9 mBq/L for 226Ra and 27.6 to 28.6 mBq/L for 228Ra using the 140% detector. To verify the methods, 7 to 10 laboratory control samples were spiked with both 226Ra and 228Ra at two different activities of 37.0 and 185 mBq/L. The results were evaluated by performing a combined location/variance chi-square test at a right-tail significance of 0.01 (99% Confidence Level), as stipulated by EPA. The verification results passed the chi-square tests at both activity levels. The destructive method can be accomplished using low-background gamma spectrometry, whereas non-destructive method requires ultralow-background gamma spectrometry.

Citizen scienee data have already been used to effectively address questions regarding migration,a fun dame ntal stage in the life history of *** this study,we use data from eBird and from 3 additional regional citizen scienee databases to describe the migration routes and timing of the red-footed falcon Falco vespertinus in the Mediterranean region across 8years(2010-2017).We further examine the seasonal and yearly variation in migration patterns and explore sites used during the species *** results suggest that the autumn passage is spatially less variable and temporally more consistent among years than in spring and that birds migrate faster in spring than in *** species seems to be more prevalent along the Central Mediterranean during spring migration,probably as a result of the clockwise loop migration that red-footed falcons *** was a high variation in annual median migration dates for both seasons as well as in migration routes across years and *** variation was exhibited in the longitudinal component thus indicating flexibility in migration *** additi on,our results showed the species'preference for I owl a nds covered with cropla nd and mosaics of cropland and natural vegetation as stopover sites during *** areas predicted from our distribution modeling highlight the importance of the Mediterranean islands as stopover sites for sea-crossing raptors,such as the red-footed *** study is the first to provide a broad-scale spatiotemporal perspective on the species migration across seasons,years and flyways and dem on strates how citize n science data can inform future monitori ng and conservation strategies.

通过对Serre地区中部(意大利南部Calabrian岛弧两个海西期英云闪长岩体在地质学、岩石学及地球化学(主要元素及V、Cr、Ni、Rb、Sr、Y、Zr、Nd、Ba、La、Ce)详细研究,可将其归属为两个不同构造单元(即Polia—Coparello和Stilo二个构造单元)。野外关系、岩相学及地球化学特征表明,这两个英云闪长岩体的成因是相同的,并同属于一个极不均匀的深层杂岩体。据这一结论和进一步的Rb/Sr同位素研究结果,两个岩体间的构造接触更可能是一剪切带,而不是推覆构造。 Serre侵入体中的英云闪长岩与主体花岗闪长岩的相互关系及地质特征表明,二者属不同的岩浆源。

Chi-Square Distribution: New Derivations and Environmental Application

We describe two new derivations of the chi-square distribution. The first derivation uses the induction method, which requires only a single integral to calculate. The second derivation uses the Laplace transform and requires minimum assumptions. The new derivations are compared with the established derivations, such as by convolution, moment generating function, and Bayesian inference. The chi-square testing has seen many applications to physics and other fields. We describe a unique version of the chi-square test where both the variance and location are tested, which is then applied to environmental data. The chi-square test is used to make a judgment whether a laboratory method is capable of detection of gross alpha and beta radioactivity in drinking water for regulatory monitoring to protect health of population. A case of a failure of the chi-square test and its amelioration are described. The chi-square test is compared to and supplemented by the t-test.

Varietal Performance of Turmeric under Mango Based Agroforestry System

An experiment was carried out at the Agroforestry and Environment Research Farm, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh, during April, 2014 to January 2015. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Among the two factors, one factor like A was two production systems: S1 = Mango + Turmeric and S2 = Turmeric (sole crop);another factor like B was three turmeric variety: V1 = bari Holud-1, V2 = bari Holud-2 and V3 = bari Holud-3. So, the treatment combinations were: S1V1 = Mango + bari Holud-1, S1V2 = Mango + bari Holud-2, S1V3 = Mango + bari Holud-3, S2V1 = sole cropping of bari Holud-1, S2V2 = sole cropping of bari Holud-2 and S2V3 = sole cropping of bari Holud-3. The result of the experiment revealed that interaction effect of production systems and variety was found significant on plant height, number of leaf per plant, length of leaf blade, breadth of leaf blade, number of finger per rhizome, fresh and dry yield per hectare. The higher fresh yield of turmeric (34.75 t/ha) and dry yield (6.10 t/ha) was found from S1V1 treatment (Mango + bari Holud-1). Whereas the lowest fresh yield (33.41 t/ha) and dry yield (4.93 t/ha) was found from S2V2 treatment (sole cropping of bari Holud-2). However, the suitability of the cultivation of different turmeric variety under mango based agroforestry systems may be ranked as S1V1 > S2V1 > S1V3 > S2V3 > S1V2 > S2V2. Finally it may be concluded that, bari Holud-1 would be the best variety to be grown under mango based agroforestry.

Antidiabetic Drugs in Combination with Hydroxychloroquine Improve Glycemic Control in Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rats

Worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus has become an issue of great concern in current decades. This life threatening disease is associated with worsening of glycemic control and progressive metabolic dysfunctions. Objective: Current study aimed to investigate the effect of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as an adjunct to glibenclamide or metformin on glycemic control in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Methods: HCQ was combined separately with two conventional anti-diabetic drugs;glibenclamide and metformin. At first, alloxan (120 mg/kg) induced diabetic rats were treated with single dose of metformin (850 mg/70 kg BW), glibenclamide (10 mg/70 kg BW) and HCQ (300 mg/70 kg BW) intraperitoneally once daily for two weeks. Then non fixed dose combinations of glibenclamide (5 mg/70 kg BW) with HCQ (150 mg/70 kg BW) and metformin (425 mg/70 kg BW) with HCQ (150 mg/70 kg BW) were injected along with those of the three drugs alone once daily for four weeks. Results: In alloxan induced diabetic rats, glibenclamide, metformin and their combination therapies reduced blood glucose level significantly but combination therapies are the most effective. Glibenclamide or metformin in combination with HCQ also significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the elevated levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level and increased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level. Moreover, HCQ potentiates the liver glycogen synthesis of metformin or glibenclamide. Conclusion: Outcomes of this investigation indicate that combination of glibenclamide or metformin with HCQ improves glycemic control and provides additional metabolic benefits, not achieved with either glibenclamide or metformin alone.

Drainage vs no drainage in secondary peritonitis with sepsis following complicated appendicitis in adults in the modern era of antibiotics

AIM: To compare the profile of postoperative outcome in secondary peritonitis with sepsis due to complicated appendicitis in two cohorts(drainage vs no-drainage) after appendicectomy in adults in the modern era of effective antibiotics. METHODS: A retrospective review of all adult patients who were operated for secondary peritonitis with sepsis due to complicated appendicitis was carried out. Total of 209 patients were identified from May 2005 to April 2009 with operative findings of gangrenous or perforated appendix. The patients were divided into two cohorts, those where prophylactic drainage was established(n = 88) and those where no drain was used(n = 121). Abdominal drain was removed oncethe drainage ceased or decreased(< 10-20 mL/d in closed system of drainage or when once daily dressing was minimally soaked in open system). Broad spectrum antibiotics to cover the gut flora were started in both cohorts at diagnosis and were stopped once septic features resolved. Peritoneal fluid for aerobic culture and sensitivity were routinely obtained intra operatively; however antibiotic regimens were not changed unless patient failed to respond to the antibiotics based on the institutional protocol. The co-morbidities and their influence on primary end points were noted. Immunocompromised patients, appendicitis complicated by inflammatory bowel disorder and tumors were excluded from the study. RESULTS: Disease stratification and other demographic features were comparable in both cohorts. There was zero mortality in drainage group while as one patient(0.82%) died in the non-drainage group. The median duration(in days) of hospital stay(6.5 vs 4); antibiotic use(5 vs 3.5); regular parental analgesic use(5 vs 3.5) and paralytic ileus(2.5 vs 2) was more common in the drainage group. Incidence of major wound infection in patients 14(15.9%) vs 22(18.18%) and residual intraabdominal sepsis(inter loop collection/abscess)-7(8%) vs 13(10.74%) requiring secondary intervention was not
