variety of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)are produced and emitted by the human body every *** identity and concentration of these VOCs reflect an individual’s metabolic *** regarding the production and origin of VOCs,however,has yet to be congruent among the scientific *** review article focuses on the recent investigations of the source and detection of biological VOCs as a potential for noninvasive discrimination between healthy and diseased *** the changes in the components of VOC profiles could provide information regarding the molecular mechanisms behind disease as well as presenting new approaches for personalized screening and *** research has prioritized the study of cancer,resulting in many research articles and reviews being written on the *** review summarizes the information gained about VOC cancer studies over the past 10 years and looks at how this knowledge correlates with and can be expanded to new and upcoming fields of VOC research,including neurodegenerative and other noninfectious *** advances in analytical techniques have allowed for the analysis of VOCs measured in breath,urine,blood,feces,and *** diagnostic approaches founded on sensor-based techniques allow for cheaper and quicker results,and we compare their diagnostic dependability with gas chromatography-and mass spectrometry-based *** future of VOC analysis as a clinical practice and the challenges associated with this transition are also discussed and future research priorities are summarized.

Litter removal impacts on soil biodiversity and eucalypt plantation development in the seasonal tropics

The little layer of tree plantations provides primary nutrients for uptake,buff ers changes in soil moisture,and provides habitat and substrate to soil epigeic ***,this layer in eucalypt plantations is often removed to reduce fuel load during the fi re season in the Brazilian savanna(Cerrado).Therefore,it is necessary to quantify the eff ects of changes in litter dynamics on the function of these plantations,on key nutrient cycling processes and on epigeic fauna diversity and *** two adjacent stands(one juvenile and one mature),the consequences of two years of litter removal were quantifi ed as monthly litterfall,leaf and fi ne wood litter decomposition,epigeic fauna abundance and diversity,soil biogeochemical variables,and tree diameter and basal area *** litterfall rates in juvenile and mature stands did not change with litter removal over the study *** litterfall ranged from 4.1 to 4.9 Mg ha^(−1)a^(−1)in litter removal plots and from 3.9 to 4.8 Mg ha^(−1)a^(−1)in control *** wood litter decomposition was slower in litter removal plots compared to controls,while leaf decomposition rates were similar in *** years of litter removal in the juvenile stand did not aff ect topsoil biogeochemical parameters but decreased available phosphorus at 20–40 cm depth relative to *** the mature stand,total cation exchange capacity(0–20 cm)was higher in controls(6.4 cmol c dm^(−3))relative to litter removal plots(6.3 cmol c dm^(−3)),while soil moisture(0–40 cm depth)was lower in litter removal(25.45 m 3 m^(−3))compared to control plots(26 m^(3)m^(−3))in the dry season.A non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination revealed an increased homogeneity in epigeic fauna where litter was ***,decomposition,diameter increment,four soil physical parameters and fourteen chemical parameters at 0–20 and 20–40 cm depth explained the diff erences in soil epigeic fauna composition between litter removal and control p

Image registration of the human accommodating eye demonstrates equivalent increases in lens equatorial radius and central thickness

AIM: To compare the results of in vivo human high resolution image registration studies of the eye during accommodation to the predictions of mathematical and finite element models of accommodation. METHODs: Data from published high quality image registration studies of pilocarpine induced accommodative changes of equatorial lens radius(ELR) and central lens thickness(CLT) were statistically analyzed. REsULTs: The mean changes in ELR and CLT were 6.76 μm/diopter and 6.51 μm/diopter, respectively. The linear regressions, reflecting the association between ELR and accommodative amplitude(AAELR) was: slope=6.58 μm/diopter, r^2=0.98, Ps: slope=6.75 μm/diopter, r^2=0.83, Psis of these relationships, the CLT slope and the AAELR were used to predict the measured change in ELR(ELRpredicted). There was no statistical difference between ELRpredicted and the measured ELR as demonstrated by a student's paired t-test: P=0.96 and linear regression analysis: slope=0.97, r^2=0.98, Pstration with invariant positional references demonstrates that ELR and CLT equivalently minimally increase ~7.0 μm/diopter during accommodation. The small equivalent increases in ELRand CLT are associated with a large accommodative amplitude. These findings are consistent with the predictions of mathematical and finite element models that specified the stiffness of the lens nucleus is the same or greater than the lens cortex and that accommodation involves a small force(<5 g).

Liver stiffness in the hepatitis B virus carrier:A non-invasive marker of liver disease influenced by the pattern of transaminases

AIM： To investigate the usefulness of transient elastography by Fibroscan （Fs）, a rapid non-invasive technique to evaluate liver fibrosis, in the management of chronic hepatitis B virus （HBV） carriers. METHODs： In 297 consecutive HBV carriers, we studied the correlation between liver stiffness （Ls）, stage of liver disease and other factors potentially influencing Fs measurements. In 87 chronic hepatitis B （CriB） patients, we monitored the Fs variations according to the spontaneous or treatment-induced variations of biochemical activity during follow-up. REsULTs： Fs values were 12.3 ± 3.3 kPa in acute hepatitis, 10.3 ± 8.8 kPa in chronic hepatitis, 4.3 ± 1.0 kPa in inactive carriers and 4.6 ± 1.2 kPa in blood donors. We identified the cut-offs of 7.5 and 11.8 kPa for the diagnosis of fibrosis ≥s3 and cirrhosis respectively, showing 93.9% and 86.5% sensitivity, 88.5% and 96.3% specificity, 76.7% and 86.7% positive predictive value （PPV）, 97.3% and 96.3% negative predictive value （NPV） and 90.1% and 94.2% diagnostic accuracy. At multivariate analysis in 171 untreated carriers, fibrosis stage （t = 13.187,P 〈 0.001）, active vs inactive HBV infection （t = 6.437, P 〈 0.001）, alanine aminotransferase （ALT）（t = 4.740, P 〈 0.001） and HBV-DNA levels （t = -2.046, P = 0.042） were independently associated with Fs. Necroinflammation score （t = 2.158, 〉 10/18 vs ≤ 10/18, P = 0.035） and ALT levels （t = 3.566, P =0.001） were independently associated with Ls in 83 untreated patients without cirrhosis and long-term biochemical remission （t = 4.662, P 〈 0.001） in 80 treated patients. During Fs monitoring （mean followup 19.9 ± 7.1 mo） Fs values paralleled those of ALT in patients with hepatitis exacerbation （with 1.2 to 4.4-fold increases in Crib patients） and showed a progressive decrease during antiviral therapy. CONCLUsION： Fs is a non-invasive tool to monitor liver disease in chronic HBV carriers, provided that the pattern of biochemical activity is taken into account. In the inacti

Improving daylighting strategy is a mandatory step to achieve visual enjoyment and energy saving in buildings. Psycho, physiological effects and energy performance have to be investigated in order to define a range of different daylighting strategies, thanks to daylighting devices and climate based daylight modeling. Daylighting optimization ensures indoor healthier rooms, reduces electric light consumption and cuts the risk of glare. The best way to achieve these targets is to define users lighting needs, based on visual targets and to draw up some green measures to reduce electricity demands. Involving new climate-based daylight modeling metrics aims at defining proper illumination targets, in order to drastically reduce electrical lights, as well as reducing thermal loads deriving from cooling and HVAC （heating, ventilation and air conditioning） systems.

The role of cochlear implantation in alleviating Tumarkin drop attacks of Meniere's disease;a case report

Ménière’s disease(MD)patients may suffer episodes of sudden falls,named Tu markin drop attacks(DAs).This fall occurs abruptly and without warning or loss of *** usually aggravate the clinical picture of MD and are challenging to *** present report describes a case treated by cochlear implantation(CI)due to concomitant deafness and offers some clinical considerations for this condition.A male patient aged 48 years with a 10-year history of definite bilateral MD had profound sNHL on the right and severe sNHL on the left *** suffered from intermittent attacks of vertigo,ear fullness,and tinnitus and,in the last year,had developed DAs and experienced 14 episodes in the previous six *** preoperative category of acoustic performance was *** Dizziness Handicap Inventory(DHI)questionnaire showed a total score of 46,which indicated a moderate degree of disability.A CI was planned for the right *** patient did not report any further DAs episode for two years since *** postoperative category of acoustic performance became 11,and the postoperative DHI questionnaire showed a decrease in the total score(from 46 to 19),which indicated a mild *** CI effectively alleviated the DAs associated with bilateral *** report proposes a new modality for managing vertiginous symptoms in cases of MD with hearing loss without the need for more aggressive surgical interventions with the need for clinical trials to confirm our results.
