Peripheral.nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the avail.bil.ty of autol.gous nerve transpl.nts for nerve repair is very l.mited, al.ernative treatment strategies are sought, incl.ding the use of tubul.r nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). However, the use of tNGCs resul.s in poor functional.recovery and central.necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which l.mits their appl.cation to short nerve l.sion defects(typical.y shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascul.rization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabl.ng the growth of bl.od vessel. from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC woul. hel. el.minate necrotic processes and l.ad to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the appl.cation of macroscopic hol.s into the tubul.r wal.s of sil.-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved sil.^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without hol.s(sil.^(–) tNGCs) and autol.gous nerve transpl.nts in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histol.gical.anal.ses, we were abl. to prove that the use of sil.^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of bl.od vessel. from the adjacent tissue to the intral.minal.neovascul.r formation. A significantl. higher number of bl.od vessel. in the sil.^(+) group was found compared with autol.gous nerve transpl.nts and sil.^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal.coaptation point compared with the sil.^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperativel.. In the 15-mm(critical.size) sciatic nerve defect model. we again observed a distinct ingrowth of bl.od vessel. through the tubul.r wal.s of sil.^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional.recovery at 12 weeks postoperativel.. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascul.r suppl. of regenerating nerves and facil.tate improved axonal.regeneration in a short-defect model.but not in a critical.size defect model. We demonstrate a novel.inorganic-organic crystal.ine nanoconstruct, where gol. atoms were imbedded in the crystal.l.ttices as defects of camptothecin nanocrystal., suggesting its potential.use as simul.aneous agents for cancer therapy and bioimaging. The incorporation of gol., a potential.computed tomography(CT) contrast agent, in the nanocrystal. of camptothecin was detected by transmission el.ctron microscope(TEM) and further quantified by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry(EDS) and inductivel. coupl.d pl.sma-optical.emission spectrometers(ICP-OES). Due to gol.'s high attenuation coefficient, onl. a rel.tivel. smal. amount needs to be present in order to create a good noise-to-contrast ratio in CT imaging. The imbedded gol. atoms and cl.sters are expected to share the same biol.gical.fate as the camptothecin nanocrystal., reaching and accumul.ting in tumor site due to the enhanced permeation and retention(EPR) effect.

Extensive bl.aching of Montastrea annul.ris spp. group and several.other scl.ractinian taxa occurred on the reefs within the Arrecifes de Cozumel.National.Park of Cozumel. Mexico, after the passage of Hurricane/Tropical.Storm Rina. We conducted six drift dives at five different dive sites （-13 h of scuba diving） and photographed a variety of reefs scenes at depths of 10-28 m. Bl.aching was noted at depths of 10-40 m in a variety of scl.ractinian species, incl.ding M. annul.ris species group, especial.y M. faveol.ta and Siderastrea siderea. Considering that l.cal.dive guides had not observed bl.aching prior to the storm and the sea surface temperature did not exceed the l.cal.bl.aching threshol., it is probabl. that the extensive rainfal. associated with Hurricane/Tropical.Storm Rina l.wered sal.nity sufficientl. via subsurface freshwater springs to cause bl.aching in susceptibl. species. This suggests the need to monitor not onl. subsurface sea temperature but al.o subsurface sal.nity in l.cal.ties where freshwater springs occur adjacent to or within coral.reefs.

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a mul.ifactorial.potential.y debil.tating disease. It has a variabl. disease course, but the majority of patients eventual.y devel.p penetrating or stricturing compl.cations l.ading to repeated surgeries and disabil.ty. Studies on the natural.history of CD provide inval.abl. data on its course and cl.nical.predictors, and may hel. to identify patient subsets based on cl.nical.phenotype. Most data are avail.bl. from referral.centers, however these outcomes may be different from those in popul.tion-based cohorts. New data suggest the possibil.ty of a change in the natural.history in Crohn’s disease, with an increasing percentage of patients diagnosed with infl.mmatory disease behavior. Hospital.zation rates remain high, whil. surgery rates seem to have decreased in the l.st decade. In addition, mortal.ty rates stil. exceed that of the general.popul.tion. The impact of changes in treatment strategy, incl.ding increased, earl.er use of immunosuppressives, biol.gical.therapy, and patient monitoring on the natural.history of the disease are stil. confl.ctive. In this review articl., the authors summarize the avail.bl. evidence on the natural.history, current trends, and predictive factors for eval.ating the disease course of CD.

The poinsettia thrips Echinothrips americanus Morgan is a rel.tivel. new pest that has spread rapidl. worl.wide and causes serious damage in both vegetabl. and ornamental.*** this study,we investigated if and how effective this pest can be control.ed in gerbera by the omnivorous predator Macrol.phus pygmaeus(Rambur).Because herbivores on pl.nts can interact through a shared predator,we al.o investigated how poinsettia thrips control.is affected by the presence of the greenhouse whitefl. Trial.urodes vaporariorum(Westwood),a pest that commonl. coexists with *** in *** l.boratory studies,we found that the predator *** fed on both pests when offered *** tests showed a cl.ar preference of the predators for pl.nts infested by whitefl.es but not by *** a greenhouse experiment,densities of both pests on singl. gerbera pl.nts were reduced to very l.w l.vel. by the predator,either with both pests present together or ***,predator‐mediated effects between whitefl.es and thrips pl.yed onl. a minor *** pl.nt feeding of the shared predator probabl. reduced the dependence of predator survival.and reproduction on the densities of the two pests,thereby weakening potential.predator‐mediated ***,*** is a good candidate for biol.gical.control.of both pests in ***,further research is needed to investigate pest control.at l.rger scal.s,when the pests can occur on different pl.nts.

Transposabl. el.ments （TEs） are sel.-repl.cating, mobil. DNA sequences which constitute a significant fraction of eukaryotic genomes. They are general.y considered sel.ish DNA, as their repl.cation and random insertion may have del.terious effects on genome functional.ties, al.hough some beneficial.effects and evol.tionary potential.have been recognized. Short interspersed el.ments （SINEs） are non-autonomous TEs with a modul.r structure： a smal. RNA-rel.ted head, a body, and a l.ng interspersed el.ment-rel.ted tail. Despite their high turnover rate and de novo emergence, the body may retain highl. conserved domains （HCDs） shared among divergent SINE famil.es： in metazoans, at l.ast nine HCD-SINEs have been recognized. Data mining on publ.c mol.cul.r databases al.owed the retrieval.of 16 new HCD-SINE famil.es from cnidarian, mol.uscs, arthropods, and vertebrates. Tracking the ancestry of HCDs on the metazoan phyl.geny reveal.d that some of them date back to the Radiata-Bil.teria spl.t. Moreover, phyl.genetic and age versus divergence anal.ses of the most ancient HCDs suggested that l.ng-term vertical.inheritance is the rul., with few horizontal.transfer events. We suggest that the evol.tionary conservation of HCDs may be l.nked to their potential.to serve as recombination hotspots. This indirectl. affects host genomes by maintaining active and diverse SINE l.neages, whose insertions may impact （either positivel. or negativel.） on the evol.tion of the genome.
