Experimental Interactions Between Clay Minerals and Bacteria: A Review

Interactions between microbes and minerals have the potential to contribute significantly to global cycles of various processes and serve as a link between the geosphere and life. Clays and clay minerals occur commonly in agriculturally utilized soils, are naturally grown underground(soil and rock) and are used in construction material. Clay minerals serve as natural, geological and technical barriers in geotechnics and environmental geotechnics. Bacteria in turn are ubiquitous in natural soils, subsoils and rocks and are in permanent contact with clay minerals. There are numerous ways in which bacteria can interact with clay minerals and alter them:dissolution, refinement and transformation, reduction of trace elements incorporated in the clay minerals and uptake of trace elements from these minerals, e.g., by the production of siderophores and chelators and enhancement or reduction of adsorbance of trace elements on clay minerals. In addition, bacteria can influence layer charge, cation exchange capacity(CEC), exchangeable cations,Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface, swelling and the rheological properties of clay minerals. The field of clay mineral-microorganism interaction is still wide open because of the large potential that the interactions of bacteria with clay minerals in soils and sediments may result in changes in clay mineral properties and behaviors. Further detailed studies on all these tentative changes and underlying mechanisms as well as broad surveys of quantifications of extents and rates of clay mineral-microorganism interactions, especially in mimicking natural systems, are highly required. This review summarizes the influences of various bacteria on the properties of different clay minerals as determined experimentally using viable bacteria.

Interpreting spatial data to derive information is a core task in the field of Geographic Information Science and Technology.A logical step following the collection of data in online repositories is to provide geoprocessing technology for analysing data *** geoprocessing technology can be employed for providing a specified set of tools in a theme-specific platform,documenting a model or workflow and making it widely available,automating recurring tasks or offering simple tools to a large user *** systematic analysis of literature evaluates how much available online geoprocessing tools are being used for answering questions in specific application *** initial set of articles is derived from a keyword-based search in the database *** set of articles is manually filtered to identify applications of online geoprocessing *** analysis of application-related articles shows that virtually all applications require further development of *** outside the spatial information science field are still underrepresented regarding the use of this *** required adaptation of technology for user tasks is identified as major barrier for the wide use of online *** research needs to assess user tasks and how online geoprocessing can provide the required functions in a useroriented manner.

A new protocol that enables asymmetric hydroaminomethylation of styrenes to afford chiral amines has been developed. Catalysed by an Rh-phosphine species and a chiral phosphoric acid, styrenes are converted into β-chiral amines with good enantioselectivities under syngas in the presence of an amine and Hantzsch ester. The reaction involves two key steps, hydroformylation and reductive amination, with the former catalysed by the Rh species whilst the latter by the phosphoric acid.

Three research papers were published recently to compare the virological properties of the Omicron variant with the earlier variants of concern(VOC).1,2,3 The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 variant,Omicron,was first detected in South Africa in October 2021 and has spread rapidly;within three months,it appeared in more than 87 countries.4 During the surveillance of the epidemiological data and mutations of earlier COVID-19 variants and Omicron,significant differences were revealed mainly in the reproduction rate and hospitalization.

Water soluble organic carbon （WSOC） is considered the most mobile and reactive soil carbon source and its characterization is an important issue for soil ecology study. A biodegradability test was set up to study WSOC extracted from 7 soils differently managed. WSOC was extracted from soil with water （soil/water ratio of 1：2, W/V） for 30 min, and then tested for biodegradability by a liquid state respirometric test. Result obtained confirmed the finding that WSOC biodegradability depended on the both land use and management practice. These results suggested the biodegradability test as suitable method to characterize WSOC, and provided useful information to soil fertility.

Ménière’s disease(MD)patients may suffer episodes of sudden falls,named Tu markin drop attacks(DAs).This fall occurs abruptly and without warning or loss of *** usually aggravate the clinical picture of MD and are challenging to *** present report describes a case treated by cochlear implantation(CI)due to concomitant deafness and offers some clinical considerations for this condition.A male patient aged 48 years with a 10-year history of definite bilateral MD had profound SNHL on the right and severe SNHL on the left *** suffered from intermittent attacks of vertigo,ear fullness,and tinnitus and,in the last year,had developed DAs and experienced 14 episodes in the previous six *** preoperative category of acoustic performance was *** Dizziness Handicap Inventory(DHI)questionnaire showed a total score of 46,which indicated a moderate degree of disability.A CI was planned for the right *** patient did not report any further DAs episode for two years since *** postoperative category of acoustic performance became 11,and the postoperative DHI questionnaire showed a decrease in the total score(from 46 to 19),which indicated a mild *** CI effectively alleviated the DAs associated with bilateral *** report proposes a new modality for managing vertiginous symptoms in cases of MD with hearing loss without the need for more aggressive surgical interventions with the need for clinical trials to confirm our results.

We compare the jet-path length and beam-energy dependence of the pion nuclear modification factor and a patton-jet nuclear modification factor at RHIC and LHC, and contrast the predictions based on a linear pQCD and a highly non-linear hybrid AdS holographic model of jet-energy loss. It is found that both models require a reduction of the jet-medium coupling from RHIC to LHC to account for the measured pion nuclear modification factor. In the case of the parton-jet nuclear modification factor, however, which serves as a lower bound for the LO jet nuclear modification factor of reconstructed jets, the extracted data can be characterized without a reduced jet-medium coupling at LHC energies. It is concluded that when the reconstructed jets are sensitive to both quarks and gluons and thus provide more information than the pion nuclear modification factor, their information regarding the jet-medium coupling is limited due to the superposition with NLO and medium effects. Hence, a detailed description of the underlying physics requires both the leading hadron and the reconstructed jet nuclear modification factor. Unfortunately, the results for both the pion and the parton-jet nuclear modification factor are insensitive to the jet-path dependence of the models considered.
