Electrocoagulation efficiency probed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

In order to treat the polluted discharge from El-Jadida,Morocco,a method of electrocoagulation using aluminum electrodes was *** approach was coupled for the first time with high-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS).Significant pollutant abatementwas observed after 30 min,at a current density of 190.5 A·m^(-2),with a specific electrical energy consumption of 1.58 kW·h(per gram of eliminated carbon organic demand(COD))and specific aluminum consumption of 0.11 g·g^(-1):electrocoagulation proved to be particularly effective,achieving 85.7%elimination of COD and a decrease of total dissolved solid(TDS)and electrical conductivity(EC)levels from 2430 mg·L^(-1)to 1773 mg·L^(-1)and from 4230μS·cm^(-1)to 3210μS·cm^(-1),*** for USP and ORP,they decreased from 2.5 to 1.87 and from 244.6 mV to 51 mV,*** inductance of the electrocoagulation system measured by EIS was modeled through an electrical equivalent *** the applied intensity increased,the coagulation resistance increased suddenly when the applied electrical current reached 0.2 A(current density:95.2 A·m^(-2)).At this point,the rate of COD abatement versus SEEC(specific electrical energy consumption decreases which shows that the EC process should be combined with another process to improve its efficiency,such as ultrasound.

Comparison of Ashes Produced in a Biomass Moving Grate Boiler by Wood Chips and Sewage Sludge

One option to fight global warming is to convert our use of fossil energy into renewables such as biomass ***,the forest preservation and the quality of the ambient air are also two major ***,the use of biomass waste without any supplementary emissions could represent a part of the *** this study,two fuels were considered for a 200 kW moving grate boiler.A multicyclone and a bag filter were fitted on the *** first fuel consisted of classical wood chips whereas the second was a mixture of wood chips with sewage *** second fuel presented a high ashes mass ratio compared to wood *** aim was to verify the possibility to burn this kind of fuel without any modification of the *** first relevant result is that the conventional pollutants,i.e.,CO and NOx,remained under the emissions limits even with the sewage sludge *** Total Suspended Particles emissions at the exhaust were always under 5.4 mg·Nm-3 dry based corrected at 6%of O_(2),which is low with respect to the standard *** majority of the ashes remained on the combustion ***,with both fuels,about 5%of ashes mass remained in the heat ***,the heat exchanger was more clogged with the second fuel,which produced five time more *** may lead to a yield ***,sewage sludge can be used in a wood boiler without any issue if an automatic exchanger sweep is fitted on the installation.

Evaluation of Phenotypic Diversity by Use of Variable Analysis Multi of Various Populations of Oak Cork (<i>Quercus suber</i>L.) in Tunisia

Populations of oak cork (Quercus suber L.) originated from different areas in Tunisia were analysed based on morphological characters to assess the overall degree of phenotypic variability, to detect similarities between the genotypes and to evaluate significant forest features. One-way ANOVA analysis shows a significant difference between oak cork populations and demonstrates that parameters measured on leaves show an important degree of variability and permit to discriminate oak cork individuals. Vegetative variables are leaf length, leaf width, petioles length, number of leaf veins, petioles width, spines number, leaf area, length nipples, diameter nipples, weight nipples, and height trees. Diameter trees were scored and subjected to multivariate analysis. Results showed a considerable diversity among local germoplasme of oak cork. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the characters related to the length and width of the sheets and the nipples accounted for a large proportion of the observed variability. Cluster analysis showed a typically continuous phenotypic diversity among oak cork accessions, and little asso-ciations between accessions from same geographic origin. Also, some heterogeneity within accessions that received the same denomination was evidenced. The variability observed between different populations is attached to phenotypic characters which depend primarily on two factors, gene and environment.

Surgical treatment and outcomes of hydatid cyst of the spleen

Aim: Discuss the different modalities of surgical treatment of splenic hydatid cyst and outcomes after treatment. Patients and Methods: Retrospectively, 14 patients were operated in our institution between 2002 and 2011. Results: A total splenectomy was performed in 8 cases. A conservative treatment was preferred in 6 cases: 2 patients underwent partiel splenctomy and two patients underwent partial cystectomy. The duration of hospitalization ranged from 5 to 15 days. The morbidity rate was 14%. One patient presented a recurrent hemorrhage and one patient developed a left pneumonia. There is no death in our series. The mean duration follow-up was 20 months and there is no recurrence. Conclusion: Management of a splenic hydatid cyst is not consensual. Surgery remains the treatment of choice to avoid serious complications. Total splenectomy is optimal because it provides definitive treatment. However, spleen-preserving surgery is the preferred treatment in some selected patients.
