AIm:The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of *** administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular bar.ier and hypophyso- gonadal axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. mETHODS:male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd,sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used as control group(n=12). RESULTS:Compared to controls,rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin *** addition,pituitary-gonadal axis was altered,with significant higher levels of FSH(Pment normalized testicular transferrin expression and cellular proliferation and reduced serum levels of LH(P=ns vs controls,and Pbar.ier is altered from an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a reduction of transferrin expression in Sertoli cells,a diminished cellular proliferation and an altered gonadal *** treatment with IGF-1 could be also useful in this initial stage of testicular disorder associated with compensated cirrhosis.

High Strain-Rate and Shock Response of Carbon SupercompositeTm

This study focuses on assessing the dynamic behaviors of carbon SupercompositeTm laminates when subjected to high strain-rates and air blast loads, using a shock tube for testing. The investigation aims to understand the response of these advanced materials under extreme conditions, which is crucial for applications in aerospace, military, and other high-performance industries. SupercompositeTm (CZE) prepreg, made up of a 3K plain weave carbon fabric with milled carbon fibers as interlaminar reinforcements impregnated with epoxy, is used to create SupercompositeTm (CZE) laminates. A woven carbon composite (CBE) laminate was also created using 3K plain weave Carbon/Epoxy (CBE) prepreg. Both types of laminates were designed and fabricated using the autoclave process. The dynamic behaviors of CZE and CBE laminate under transverse compression loads were evaluated using a modified Split Hopkinson Pressure bar.(SHPB). The study found that the 3D reinforcement with milled carbon fibers significantly affected the dynamic behavior of the CZE laminate. Stereo imaging videos, captured using two SHImADZU high-speed video cameras in shock tube experiments, recorded the time history of back surface deflection. The plate specimens exhibited low deflections without any visible damage. The experimentally observed center point deflections of the CZE plates decayed sooner than those of the CBE laminates, indicating an improvement in damping due to the presence of 3D reinforced milled carbon fibers. This research shows that optimized utilization of milled carbon fibers as 3D reinforcement can withstand high stress in the thickness direction and higher energy absorption when subjected to impact and high strain-rate loading.

Characteristics of Infertile Clientele Attending a Public in Vitro Fertilization Clinic: Appraising Priorities in a Low-Income Country

Introduction: Infertilityaffects one in six couples, and it is an important public health issue largely due to thepervasive effects on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of affected couples. In many developing nations emphasis is placed on childbirth and inability to fulfill this role can be very distressing. There is an unmet need for assisted reproductive technology (ART) in many developing countries and where facilities exist, they are mostly privately owned, expensive and concentrated in urban areas. To bridge this gap, public fertility clinics have been established to provide subsidized care. Evaluating the characteristics and peculiarities of clientele presenting at these public facilities will aid planning and prioritization of care. methodology: A descriptive retrospective study of 116 infertile patients presenting to the fertility clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria from inception on the 14th of February 2019 and 31st of December *** was analyzed using the Statical Package for Social Sciences (IBm, SPSS, New York) version 23. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results which were presented with the aid of bar.charts and frequency tables. Result: The mean age of the patients was 40.70 ± 6.62 years. Post-menopausal patients accounted for about one-fifth of the study population while 80.2% (93 women) were older than 35 years. The mean duration of infertility was 9.39 ± 6.11years and nine patients (7.8%) had a duration greater than 2 decades. Secondary infertility occurred in 67.2% of the women. Twenty-nine women (25%) had undergone myomectomy prior to presentation. Hypertension (11.2%) was the most prevalent comorbidity. Nineteen patients (16.4%) had used contraceptives in the past with the male condom (36.8%)being the most preponderant. Role of nestin in glioma invasion

AIm: To determine the role for the intermediate filament protein nestin in glioma invasion. mETHODS: We examined the expression and function of nestin in gliomas(Grades Ⅱ-Ⅳ as defined by the World Health Organization). We determined nestin expression using Immunohistochemical methods. To elucidate nestin's biological function(s), we reduced m RNA levels by 61% and 87% in two glioblastomaderived neurosphere lines using short hairpin RNAs and determined the effect of reduced nestin expression on glioma cell proliferation and invasion using mTS and matrigel migration assays, respectively. We also utilized quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction assaysto determine the effect of reduced nestin expression on the expression of other markers associated with glioma stem cells and their differentiated progenies. RESULTS: We found a significant correlation between nestin immunoreactivity and astrocytoma tumor grade, with 36% of grade Ⅱ, 75% of grade Ⅲ, and 100% of grade Ⅳtumors expressing significant levels of the protein when assessed using immunohistochemistry. Reduction in nestin expression had no effect on cell growth in culture, but did retard the capacity of one line to migrate in-vitro on matrigel. Interestingly, in the line whose migration was not affected, m RNA levels of a second intermediate filament, synemin(also knowns as desmuslin), were elevated following introduction of sh RNA targeting nestin. As synemin was not induced in the line which required nestin for migration, it is a possibility that synemin may compensate for the loss of nestin in this process. CONCLUSION: Nestin expression is prominent in high-grade astrocytomas. Nestin is not required for cell growth but it may, however, be required for cell motility.

All living organisms share similar reactions within their central metabolism to provide precursors for all essential building blocksand reducing power. To identify whether alternative metabolic routes of glycolysis can operate in E. coli, we complementarilyemployed in silico design, rational engineering, and adaptive laboratory evolution. First, we used a genome-scale model andidentified two potential pathways within the metabolic network of this organism replacing canonical Embden-meyerhof-Parnas(EmP) glycolysis to convert phosphosugars into organic acids. One of these glycolytic routes proceeds via methylglyoxal andthe other via serine biosynthesis and degradation. Then, we implemented both pathways in E. coli strains harboring defectiveEmP glycolysis. Surprisingly, the pathway via methylglyoxal seemed to immediately operate in a triosephosphate isomerasedeletion strain cultivated on glycerol. By contrast, in a phosphoglycerate kinase deletion strain, the overexpression ofmethylglyoxal synthase was necessary to restore growth of the strain. Furthermore, we engineered the “serine shunt” whichconverts 3-phosphoglycerate via serine biosynthesis and degradation to pyruvate, bypassing an enolase deletion. Finally, toexplore which of these alternatives would emerge by natural selection, we performed an adaptive laboratory evolution studyusing an enolase deletion strain. Our experiments suggest that the evolved mutants use the serine shunt. Our study reveals theflexible repurposing of metabolic pathways to create new metabolite links and rewire central metabolism.

The formation mechanism of the bonding between compound cast Al/Ti bimetal during a heat treatment regime was *** pure Al was cast and melt on a Ti bar.in a steel tube,followed by heat treatment on the compound cast Ti/Al bimetal for different periods of time once the Al melt was *** bonding was observed between the two metals after the initial casting,which can be attributed to the presence of oxide films on the liquid Al and solid Ti alloys and the trapped atmosphere between *** effect of these layers in preventing the formation of bonding was eliminated after heat treating the cast part at~973 K(~700℃)for at least 15 min,and the metals started to bond with each other.A detailed description of this bonding mechanism is presented in this paper.

A correct antibody response requires the participation of both B and T lymphocytes and antigen presenting cells. In this review we address the role of follicular helper T lymphocytes(T FH) in this reaction. We shall focus on the regulation of their development and function in health and disease. T FH can be characterized on the basis of their phenotype and the pattern of secretion of cytokines. This fact is useful to study their participation in the generation of antibody deficiency in primary immunodeficiency diseases such as common variable immunodeficiency, X-linked hyper Ig m syndrome orX-linked lymphoproliferative disease. Increased numbers of T FH have been demonstrated in several autoimmune diseases and are thought to play a role in the development of autoantibodies. In chronic viral infections caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B or C virus, increased circulating T FH have been observed, but their role in the protective immune response to these agents is under discussion. Likewise, an important role of T FH in the control of some experimental protozoan infections has been proposed, and it will be important to assess their relevance in order to design effective vaccination strategies.

Background： metabolic syndrome （metS） is one of the high cardiovascular （CV） situations. Endothelial dysfunction, which is a common finding in patients with metS, is related with increased CV risk. In patients with metS, the effect of the major CV risk factors, not included in the metS definition, on endothelial dysfunction is not well known. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of major CV risk factors such as gender, smoking, family history, and biochemical parameters on endothelial dysfunction in patients with metS. methods： The study was performed between December 2010 and August 2014. A total of 55 patients （ 15 females and 40 males） with metS and 81 healthy controls （37 females and 44 males） with a body mass index 〈25 kg/m2 were enrolled in the study. Endothelial dysfunction was measured by flow-mediated dilatation （FmD）, oxidative stress parameters; high-sensitivity C-reactive protein （hs-CRP）, oxidized low-density lipoprotein （ox-LDL）, endothelial nitric oxide synthase （e-NOS）, nitric oxide, and cell adhesion markers; yon Willebrand factor, and e-selectin. Platelet aggregation （endothelial adenosine diphosphate）, total platelet count, and mean platelet volume were additionally analyzed and demographic parameters were explored. Student＇s t-test, mann-Whitney U-test, and Chi-square test were used to analyze the results. Results： The fasting blood glucose （z = 3.52, P = 0.001 ）, hs-CRP （z - 3.23, P = 0.004）, ox-LDL （z = 2.62, P= 0,013）, and e-NOS （z = 2.22, P = 0.026） levels and cardiac risk score （z - 5.23, P 〈 0.001） were significantly higher in patients with metS compared with the control group. Smoking was correlated with decreased FmD （χ2 = 9.26, P = 0.002） in metS patients but not in the control group. Conclusions： Increased ox-LDL, hs-CRP, and e-NOS are likely to be a result of oxidative stress, a condition in which an imbalance occurs between the production and inactivation of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species. Background: Corneal astigmatism is a well-documented finding after cataract surgery. Postoperative astigmatism is of greater importance in children than in adults, because of its adverse effect on vision development and the risk of amblyopia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate refractive outcomes in eyes-which had high early postoperative astigmatism after congenital cataract surgery. methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 74 children (112 eyes), who underwent congenital cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation, using limbal incision, scleral tunnel, or clear corneal incision. Thirty-two eyes of 28 children, aged 2 months to 11 years, had astigmatism of 3.0 diopters (D) or more when assessed 1 week after surgery. Changes in cylinder vector, spherical equivalent (SEQ) and defocus equivalent (DEQ) between 1 week and 5 months postoperatively were calculated for each group. Results: mean SEQ and DEQ were 0.7± 3.5 D and 5.1± 2.8 D, respectively, at 1 week postoperatively-and -0.2± 3.4 D and 3.1± 2.3 D, respectively, at 5 months postoperatively in the three groups. DEQ levels showed a significant reduction during the 5-month follow-up period (P mean astigmatism vector was 2.9± 3.3 D× 93° in all the three groups 1 week postoperatively-and 0.2± 1.1 D× 153° at 5 months after surgery. A significant change during 5-month follow-up in cylinder vector (P < 0.02) and SEQ (P=0.01) was found after operations using scleral tunnel technique. Conclusion: Children-who underwent congenital cataract surgery by different surgical techniques showed a significant spontaneous reduction in DEQ values. A significant change in cylinder vector and SEQ was found after operations using scleral tunnel technique.
