The advent of the big data era creates both opportunities and challenges for traditional Chinese medicine （TCM）. This study describes the origin, concept, connotation, and value of studies regarding the scientific computation of TCM. It also discusses the integration of science, technology, and medicine under the guidance of the paradigm of real-world, clinical scientific research. TCM clinical diagnosis, treatment, and knowledge were traditionally limited to literature and sensation levels; however, primary methods are used to convert them into statistics, such as the methods of feature subset optimizing, multi-label learning, and complex networks based on complexity, intelligence, data, and computing sciences. Furthermore, these methods are applied in the modeling and analysis of the various complex relationships in individualized clinical diagnosis and treatment, as well as in decision-making related to such diagnosis and treatment. Thus, these methods strongly support the real-world clinical research paradigm of TCM.

With the transformation of modern medicinal pattern, medical studies are contronted with methodological challenges. By analyzing two methodologies existing in the study of physical matter system and information system, the article points out that traditional Chinese medicine （TCM）, especially the treatment based on syndrome differentiation, embodies information conception of methodological positions, while western medicine represents matter conception of methodological positions. It proposes a new way of thinking about combination of TCM and western medicine by combinating two kinds of methodological methods.

Efficacy evaluation of summer acupoint application treatment on asthma patients: a two-year follow-up clinical study

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the self-efficacy and satisfaction of asthma patients subjected to summer acupoint application treatment(SAAT).METHODS: A two-year follow-up clinical study was conducted. Patients with asthma were treated by applying a herbal paste onto the Feishu(BL 13) and Fengmen(BL 12) acupoints on the three hottest days of summer, according to the traditional Chinese calendar, from 2008 to 2010. During a two-year follow-up, these patients were asked tofill out a questionnaire evaluating asthma degree,exacerbation frequency, concomitant medications and self-satisfaction. The self-rate and doctor-report outcomes obtained in parallel were evaluated to assess the efficacy of ***: A total of 527 asthma patients were initially enrolled in this study, of which 97 elderly patients and those with more severe cases of asthma were lost to follow-up. Thus, a total of 430 patients were valid for analysis using self-rate data. Nevertheless, occasional negative returns were obtained;almost all of the outcomes were rated as "No change", "Moderate effective", or "Very effective". In addition, 80% of the patients were satisfied with this treatment. Moreover, 391(91.4%) patients were somewhat improved after SAAT in 2009, and further improvement was observed in 2010. After SAAT, the average asthma-degree score decreased from 5.3 in 2008 to 4 in 2009 and, subsequently to3.5 in ***: With pronounced patient satisfaction, SAAT can reduce the exacerbation severity and frequency, concomitant medications and asthma degree. Prolonging the treatment course might enhance the efficacy of SAAT.

Ontological reconstruction of the clinical terminology of traditional Chinese medicine

This study proposes the ontological reconstruction of the current clinical terminology of traditional Chinese medicine （TCM）. It also provides an overview of preliminary work related to the said reconstruction, including the ontology-based analysis of TCM clinical terminology. We conclude that the ontological reconstruction of TCM clinical terminology provides a proper translation from the idealized organizational model to real-world implementation and to a formalized, shared, and knowledge-based framework.

Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation （GRADE） offers a worldwide approach to guideline development for clinical practice. For the clinical practice of acupuncture therapy, 18 evidence-based guidelines have been developed in China using GRADE. In this study, we review the advantages and limitations of the GRADE approach in the guideline development for acupuncture and moxibustion and propose some solutions to these limitations. Scientific advantages of rating the quality of evidence, outcome-centric direction, overall progression to develop recommendations, and strength of recommendations providing specific clinical guidance are the advantages of GRADE. The limitations of GRADE in the development of guidelines for acupuncture and moxibustion include rating the quality of evidence for ancient literature and literature on famous traditional Chinese medicine experts＇ experiences and specific guidelines for formulating recommendations from evidence. In the guideline development for clinical practice with acupuncture and moxibustion, we suggest that a specific method should be explored based on the GRADE approach and the characteristics of acupuncture therapy.

OBJECTIVE:Allergic rhinitis(AR) is a common health *** acupoint application treatment(SAAT) is reported to effectively treat and prevent AR from seasonal *** the present study,we aimed to evaluate its effects,especially on the course of AR,through a retrospective ***:A cross-sectional multicenter study was performed based on patients treated between 2008 and 2009 in 13 clinical centers in China.A total of 1058 outpatients aged ≥2 years with documented AR and ≥1 year SAAT were eligible for enrollment.A case report form(CRF) was completed by both patient and *** CRF was designed to collect data on the patient's history of SAAT,AR condition,and self-reported health *** outcomes(dependent variables) were incidence and intensity of AR and concomitant medications *** were analyzed with ordinal logistic regression(OLR).RESULTS:Treatment course and seasonal pattern of AR were related to all dependent variables *** controlling for sample bias and confounding factors,the findings suggested that a 3-year treatment course had better efficacy(OR/incidence of AR:2.57,95%CI:1.76-3.76;OR/intensity of AR:2.17,95%CI:1.50-3.17;OR/concomitant medications:2.20,95% CI:1.50-3.23) compared with a 2-year or less treatment ***:The results showed that:1)the length of treatment course was positively associated with the efficacy of SAAT(the longer the treatment course,the better the efficacy);and 2)SAAT was more efficacious in treating seasonal AR than non-seasonal AR.
