Understanding Simulated Causes of Damaging Surface Winds in a Derecho-Producing Mesoscale Convective System near the East China Coast Based on Convection-Permitting Simulations

A mesoscale convective system (MCS) occurred over the East China coastal provinces and the East China Sea on 30 April 2021, producing damaging surface winds near the coastal city Nantong with observed speeds reaching 45 m s-1. A simulation using the Weather Research and Forecasting model with a 1.5-km grid spacing generally reproduces the development and subsequent organization of this convective system into an MCS, with an eastward protruding bow segment over the sea. In the simulation, an east-west-oriented high wind swath is generated behind the gust front of the MCS. Descending dry rear-to-front inflows behind the bow and trailing gust front are found to feed the downdrafts in the main precipitation regions. The inflows help to establish spreading cold outflows and enhance the downdrafts through evaporative cooling. Meanwhile, front-to-rear inflows from the south are present, associated with severely rearward-tilted updrafts initially forming over the gust front. Such inflows descend behind (north of) the gust front, significantly enhancing downdrafts and near-surface winds within the cold pool. Consistently, calculated trajectories show that these parcels that contribute to the derecho originate primarily from the region ahead (south) of the east-west-oriented gust front, and dry southwesterly flows in the low-to-middle levels contribute to strong downdrafts within the MCS. Moreover, momentum budget analyses reveal that a large westward-directed horizontal pressure gradient force within the simulated cold pool produced rapid flow acceleration towards Nantong. The analyses enrich the understanding of damaging wind characteristics over coastal East China and will prove helpful to operational forecasters.

Genomic insights into adaptation to bipedal saltation and desert-like habitats of jerboas

Jerboas is a lineage of small rodents displaying atypical mouse-like morphology with elongated strong hindlimbs and short *** have evolved obligate bipedal saltation and acute senses,and been well-adapted to vast desert-like *** a newly sequenced chromosome-scale genome of the Mongolian five-toed jerboa(Orientallactaga sibirica),our comparative genomic analyses and in vitro functional assays showed that the genetic innovations in both protein-coding and non-coding regions played an important role in jerboa morphological and physiological ***-specific amino acid substitutions,and segment insertions/deletions(indels)in conserved non-coding elements(CNEs)were found in components of proteoglycan biosynthesis pathway(XYLT1 and CHSY1),which plays an important role in limb ***,we found specific evolutionary changes functionally associated with energy or water metabolism(e.g.,specific amino acid substitutions in ND5 and indels in CNEs physically near ROR2)and senses(e.g.,expansion of vomeronasal receptors and the FAM136A gene family)in *** dual-luciferase reporter assay verified that some of the CNEs with jerboa-specific segment indels exerted a significantly different influence on luciferase activity,suggesting changes in their regulatory function in *** results revealed the potential molecular mechanisms underlying jerboa adaptation since the divergence from the Eocene-Oligocene transition,and provided more resources and new insights to enhance our understanding of the molecular basis underlying the phenotypic diversity and the environmental adaptation of mammals.

Deep reinforcement learning using least-squares truncated temporal-difference

Policy evaluation(PE)is a critical sub-problem in reinforcement learning,which estimates the value function for a given policy and can be used for policy ***,there still exist some limitations in current PE methods,such as low sample efficiency and local convergence,especially on complex *** this study,a novel PE algorithm called Least-Squares Truncated Temporal-Difference learning(LST2D)is *** LST2D,an adaptive truncation mechanism is designed,which effectively takes advantage of the fast convergence property of Least-Squares Temporal Difference learning and the asymptotic convergence property of Temporal Difference learning(TD).Then,two feature pre-training methods are utilised to improve the approximation ability of ***,an Actor-Critic algorithm based on LST2D and pre-trained feature representations(ACLPF)is proposed,where LST2D is integrated into the critic network to improve learning-prediction *** simulation studies were conducted on four robotic tasks,and the corresponding results illustrate the effectiveness of *** proposed ACLPF algorithm outperformed DQN,ACER and PPO in terms of sample efficiency and stability,which demonstrated that LST2D can be applied to online learning control problems by incorporating it into the actor-critic architecture.

Chromosome-level assembly of triploid genome of Sichuan pepper(Zanthoxylum armatum)

As an important spice species in Rutaceae, the Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum armatum) can provide pungent and numbing taste, as well as aroma in its mature fruit. Here we assembled a chromosome-level genome of green prickly ash which was widely cultivated in a major production area including Chongqing and Sichuan province, China. We generated 712 Gb (~112×) PacBio long reads and 511 Gb (~82×) Hi-C data, and yielded an assembly of 99 pseudochromosomes with total size of 5.32 Gb and contig N50 of 796 kb. The genomic analyses and cytogenetic experiments both indicated that the cultivarZhuye Huajiao’ was a triploid. We identified a Zanthoxylum-specific whole genome duplication event emerging about 24.8 million years ago (Mya). We also detected a transposition burst event (0.3-0.4 Mya) responsible for the large genome size of Z. armatum. Metabolomic analysis of the Zanthoxylum fruits during development stages revealed profiles of39 volatile aroma compounds and 528 secondary metabolites, from which six types of sanshools were identified. Based on metabolomic and transcriptomic network analysis, we screened candidate genes encoding long chain acyl-CoA synthetase, fatty acid desaturase,branched-chain amino acid aminotransferase involved in sanshool biosynthesis and three genes encoding terpene synthase during fruit development. The multi-omics data provide insights into the evolution of Zanthoxylum and molecular basis of numbing and aroma flavor of Sichuan pepper.

Nitrogen and fluorine co-doped graphene for ultra-stable lithium metal anodes

The heteroatom doping strategies have been utilized to effectively improve the performance of the carbon-based hosts,such as graphene,for lithium(Li)metal in high energy density lithium metal ***,solely doped graphene hosts often need the assistance of other materials with either better lithiophilicity or electronic conductance to achieve smooth and efficient deposition of Li,which adds extra weight or ***,graphene co-doped by nitrogen and fluorine(NFG)is employed as a stable host for Li,where the N-doping provides lithiophilicity and electronic conductivity lacked by F-doping and the F-doping facilitates fast formation of solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)retarded by *** well regulation of Li plating/stripping and SEI formation is verified by quickly stabilized and small-magnitude voltage hysteresis,which stands out in Li hosts based on doped graphene and leads to excellent long-term cycling performance of NFG based electrodes.A voltage hysteresis of 20 mV is observed for more than 850 h in the symmetrical *** remarkable efficiency of lithium usage is confirmed by the highcapacity retention of a full cell paired with LiFePO_(4)(LFP),which exceeds 70%after 500 *** work presents an innovative perspective on the control of Li plating/stripping by simultaneously introducing two kinds of dopants into graphene and paving the way for exploring practical Li metal batteries.

Inspired by the success of WaveNet in multi-subject speech synthesis,we propose a novel neural network based on causal convolutions for multi-subject motion modeling and *** network can capture the intrinsic characteristics of the motion of different subjects,such as the influence of skeleton scale variation on motion ***,after fine-tuning the network using a small motion dataset for a novel skeleton that is not included in the training dataset,it is able to synthesize high-quality motions with a personalized style for the novel *** experimental results demonstrate that our network can model the intrinsic characteristics of motions well and can be applied to various motion modeling and synthesis tasks.

Microorganisms play an essential role in the glacier carbon cycle;how they transform organic matter in mountain glacial cryoconite remains to be ***,we applied ultra-high resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry(FT-ICR MS)and deep sequencing of 16S rRNA gene,to investigate the temporal microbial transformation of dissolved organic matter(DOM)of the Tibetan Plateau *** the 60-day incubation,we found that DOM in cryoconite underwent a three-stage transformation,with decreasing bioavailability over *** microbial community did not change much in the first week while degrading DOM molecules that were associated with higher H/C_(wa)and lower O/C_(wa).During days 15-30,DOM composition remained stable while microbial diversity *** day 60,the DOM was microbially converted into a higher state of recalcitrance,with higher values of aromatic index,O/C_(wa),and lower H/C_(wa),which contained molecules containing more *** among various microbial taxa,like Cyanobacteria,Bacteroidota,Gammaproteobacteria,Firmicutes,and Actinobacteriota,drove the DOM transformation in *** study sheds light on the in-situ transformation of DOM composition meditated by microbial populations in cryoconite at a temporal scale,providing new insights into understanding the microbial roles in the glacier organic carbon transformation.

Effects of water molecules on luminescence in europium and terbium coordination polymers with p-fluorobenzoic acid as ligand

Our previous experimental observations show that the crystal structure of lanthanide luminescent complexes synthesized in aqueous solution usually contains a large number of coordination water molecules or free water *** order to probe the influence of water molecules on luminescent processes of lanthanide complexes,the photoluminescence properties of Ln-FBA(Ln=Eu and Tb,FBA=p-fluorobenzoic acid)coordination polymers at different ambient temperatures,in different solvents and aqueous DMSO solutions with different volume concentrations were systematically *** experiment results show that the presence of water molecules can promote the energy transfer from FBA ligand to Ln3+,at the same time,can cause luminescent non-radiation quenching of lanthanide *** addition,the variation of emission intensity ratio of 615 nm/591 nm peaks of Eu^(3+)with increasing the volume concentration of H_(2)O can be potentially used for the quantitatively detection of water traces in organic *** order to suppress the non-radiation quenching caused by the water molecules,Ln-FBA(Ln=Eu and Tb)coordination polymers were embedded into the PVP matrix to prepare Ln-FBA@PVP hybrid *** photoluminescence investigation indicates that PVP can not only block the quenching effect of water molecules on luminescence,but also effectively sensitize Eu^(3+)and Tb^(3+)*** experimental conclusions are useful for probing the influence of water molecules on luminescent processes of lanthanide complexes,quantitatively detecting water traces in organic solvents and enhancing the photoluminescence intensity in lanthanide complexes.

Enhanced High-Temperature Energy Storage Performance of All-Organic Composite Dielectric via Constructing Fiber-Reinforced Structure

Optimizing the high-temperature energy storage characteristics of energy storage dielectrics is of great significance for the development of pulsed power devices and power control *** a polymer with a higher glass transition temperature（Tg） as the matrix is one of the effective ways to increase the upper limit of the polymer operating ***,current high-Tgpolymers have limitations,and it is difficult to meet the demand for high-temperature energy storage dielectrics with only one *** example,polyetherimide has high-energy storage efficiency,but low breakdown strength at high *** has high corona resistance,but low high-temperature energy storage *** this work,combining the advantages of two polymer,a novel high-Tgpolymer fiberreinforced microstructure is *** is designed as extremely fine fibers distributed in the composite dielectric,which will facilitate the reduction of high-temperature conductivity loss for *** the same time,due to the high-temperature resistance and corona resistance of polyimide,the high-temperature breakdown strength of the composite dielectric is *** the polyimide content with the best hightemperature energy storage characteristics is determined,molecular semiconductors（ITIC） are blended into the polyimide fibers to further improve the high-temperature ***,excellent hightemperature energy storage properties are *** 0.25 vol% ITICpolyimide/polyetherimide composite exhibits high-energy density and high discharge efficiency at 150℃(2.9 J cm-3,90%) and 180℃(2.16 J cm-3,90%).This work provides a scalable design idea for high-performance allorganic high-temperature energy storage dielectrics.
