Artificial intelligence computed tomography helps evaluate the severity of COVID-19 patients:A retrospective study

BACKGROUND:Computed tomography(CT)is a noninvasive imaging approach to assist the early diagnosis of pneumonia.However,coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)shares similar imaging features with other types of pneumonia,which makes differential diagnosis problematic.Artificial intelligence(AI)has been proven successful in the medical imaging field,which has helped disease identification.However,whether AI can be used to identify the severity of COVID-19 is still underdetermined.METHODS:Data were extracted from 140 patients with confirmed COVID-19.The severity of COVID-19 patients(severe vs.non-severe)was defined at admission,according to American Thoracic Society(ATS)guidelines for community-acquired pneumonia(CAP).The AI-CT rating system constructed by Hangzhou YITU Healthcare Technology Co.,Ltd.was used as the analysis tool to analyze chest CT images.RESULTS:A total of 117 diagnosed cases were enrolled,with 40 severe cases and 77 non-severe cases.Severe patients had more dyspnea symptoms on admission(12 vs.3),higher acute physiology and chronic health evaluation(APACHE)II(9 vs.4)and sequential organ failure assessment(SOFA)(3 vs.1)scores,as well as higher CT semiquantitative rating scores(4 vs.1)and AI-CT rating scores than non-severe patients(P<0.001).The AI-CT score was more predictive of the severity of COVID-19(AUC=0.929),and ground-glass opacity(GGO)was more predictive of further intubation and mechanical ventilation(AUC=0.836).Furthermore,the CT semiquantitative score was linearly associated with the AI-CT rating system(Adj R2=75.5%,P<0.001).CONCLUSIONS:AI technology could be used to evaluate disease severity in COVID-19 patients.Although it could not be considered an independent factor,there was no doubt that GGOs displayed more predictive value for further mechanical ventilation.

Research progress of slippage characteristic and gas film stability enhancement methods on biomimetic hydrophobic surfaces

The biomimetic hydrophobic surface is a potentially efficient underwater drag reduction method and the drag reduction mechanism of this kind of surface comes from the interfacial slippage.For now,it is a hotspot to grasp the slippage characteristic and explore slippage enhancement strategies.This paper not only summarizes our numerical simulation and experimental results of slippage characteristic at the solid-liquid interface(SLI)of hydrophobic surfaces(HS)and the gas-liquid interface(GLI)of superhydrophobic surfaces(SHS)in recent years,but also introduces some innovative methods that can effectively improve the gas film stability and drag reduction effect of SHS.First,we used the molecular dynamics(MD)simulation method to figure out the effect of the solid-liquid interaction strength,the system temperature and the shear rate on the slippage of SLI,and expound their action mechanism from molecular scale.Then,by MD and multibody dissipative particle dynamics(MDPD)method,the slippage behavior at the GLI was studied under the influence of the microstructure size and the flow driving velocity.We proposed a new kind of hybrid slip boundary condition model to describe the slippage characteristic on GLI.In addition,we found through experiment that a three-dimensional backflow will appear on the GLI under the interfacial adsorption of surfactants,and the backflow direction will reverse with the change of GLI morphology.Finally,we put forward the wettability step structure and gas injection method to enhance the stability and drag reduction effect of the gas film on SHS.

Investigation on the influence of vortex generator on particle resuspension

The vortex generator(VG)and its well-known effect in flow optimization are widely studied and employed across different engineering sectors.However,while the same working principles of VG may be well suited for the applications on surface-cleaning technologies,such promising potential is hardly,if any,explored in the published literature.Therefore,in the present study,the influence on flow-induced particle resuspension brought by a rectangular vG in a channel flow is investigated with the help of highfidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations.Substantial increases of particle removal forces and resuspension rates are discovered in long,strip-like regions with reduced boundary-layer thickness resulted from the vG-induced vortices,and the enhancement effect is especially significant for configurations with the VG installed at a greater angle of attack.It is also shown that while the resuspension enhancements on the lower and the upper surfaces of the channel exhibit distinct statistical characteristics,having a VG in the channel improves the overall particle-removing capability of the channel flow by introducing higher surface-averaged removal forces and particle resuspension rates.Last but not least,the increase of resuspension rate is especially significant for the smaller,micron-scale particles which are otherwise hardly disturbed by a VG-less channel flow,and such resuspension-enhancement effectgenerally subsides with increasing particle size.

BACKGROUND Lymph node(LN)staging in rectal cancer(RC)affects treatment decisions and patient prognosis.For radiologists,the traditional preoperative assessment of LN metastasis(LNM)using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)poses a challenge.AIM To explore the value of a nomogram model that combines Conventional MRI and radiomics features from the LNs of RC in assessing the preoperative metastasis of evaluable LNs.METHODS In this retrospective study,270 LNs(158 nonmetastatic,112 metastatic)were randomly split into training(n=189)and validation sets(n=81).LNs were classified based on pathology-MRI matching.Conventional MRI features[size,shape,margin,T2-weighted imaging(T2WI)appearance,and CE-T1-weighted imaging(T1WI)enhancement]were evaluated.Three radiomics models used 3D features from T1WI and T2WI images.Additionally,a nomogram model combining conventional MRI and radiomics features was developed.The model used univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression.Evaluation employed the receiver operating characteristic curve,with DeLong test for comparing diagnostic performance.Nomogram performance was assessed using calibration and decision curve analysis.RESULTS The nomogram model outperformed conventional MRI and single radiomics models in evaluating LNM.In the training set,the nomogram model achieved an area under the curve(AUC)of 0.92,which was significantly higher than the AUCs of 0.82(P<0.001)and 0.89(P<0.001)of the conventional MRI and radiomics models,respectively.In the validation set,the nomogram model achieved an AUC of 0.91,significantly surpassing 0.80(P<0.001)and 0.86(P<0.001),respectively.CONCLUSION The nomogram model showed the best performance in predicting metastasis of evaluable LNs.

Influence characteristics of water penetration on fibre-reinforced polymer/rigid polyurethane foam interface of the composite cross-arm considering natural ageing

Fibre-reinforced polymer(FRP)/rigid polyurethane foam(RPUF)interface is susceptible to moisture intrusion in addition to natural ageing during operation.This study investigated the influence of moisture intrusion on the FRP/RPUF interface under natural ageing using experiments and molecular dynamics(MD)simulations.Water absorption,shear strength,and leakage current tests were used to clarify the changes in the interface performance.The degradation mechanism of moisture intrusion at the interface under natural ageing was revealed by MD simulation and micro-characterisation.The results show that the natural ageing of interfacial materials will slightly reduce the quality of the interface but will reduce the water resistance of the material and promote the process of water intrusion into the interface.In addition,water mainly invades the interface through RPUF.After water penetration,the interfacial bonding strength and insulation performance significantly decreased.Plasticisation and hydrolysis of interfacial materials are the main reasons for decreased interfacial adhesion.Hydrolysis can cause irreversible damage to the interface,increasing interface defects and water absorption.The vicious cycle of material hydrolysis is the ultimate cause of interfacial debonding.The polar molecules produced by this process and the water absorbed by the interface caused the degradation of the interface insulation performance.

Metallogenesis of the Baidi Au-Sb deposit, southwest Guizhou Province, China: mineralogical and geochemical evidence from sulfur-bearing minerals

The Baidi Au-Sb deposit, which contains 8 t of Au and 10,979 Mt of Sb, is a typical and rare paragenetic deposit located in southwestern Guizhou Province, China.Previous studies have focused on individual ores, but have not combined them to identify their paragenetic mechanism or metallogenic regularity. Therefore, we used field investigations, microscopic observations, and in situ analyses to identify the spatial distribution, mineral paragenesis, compositional evolution, and metallogenic material sources of the ore bodies. We also determined the Au and Sb paragenetic characteristics and the metallogenesis of the deposit. The main Au-bearing minerals in the deposit were early(Apy1–2) and late(Apy3) stage arsenopyrites, as well as pre-mineralization(Py1), mineralization(Py2–5), and late mineralization(Py6–7) stage pyrites. The main Sb-bearing minerals were stibnite(Snt), skinnerite, bournonite,and valentinite. The minerals formed in the order of Py1,Py2–3 + Apy1, Py4–5 + Apy2, Snt, and Py6–7 + Apy3.The δ34S values of the arsenopyrites and pyrites ranged from-5 to 5‰, while those of stibnite were mostly less than-5‰ in the later mineralization stages. Sulfur was provided by deep magmatic hydrothermal fluids, but sedimentary sulfur was added in the later stages. Moreover,the trace elemental contents fluctuated and eventually became similar to those of the sedimentary strata. By comprehensively considering the ores along with the geological characteristics of the deposit, we determined that deep magma provided the Au during ore formation. Later tectonic changes provided Sb from the sedimentary strata,which precipitated along fault expansion areas and produced Au and Sb paragenesis.

Intake of tobacco nitrosamines of smokers in various provinces of China and their cancer risk:A meta-analysis

Nitrosamines are a class of carcinogens which have been detected widely in food,water,some pharmaceuticals as well as tobacco.The objectives of this paper include reviewing the basic information on tobacco consumption and nitrosamine contents,and assessing the health risks of tobacco nitrosamines exposure to Chinese smokers.We searched the publications in English from“Web of Science”and those in Chinese from the“China National Knowledge Infrastructure”in 2022 and collected 151 literatures with valid information.The content of main nitrosamines in tobacco,including 4-(methylnitrosoamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone(NNK),N-nitrosonornicotine(NNN),N-nitrosoanatabine(NAT),N-nitrosoanabasine(NAB),total tobacco-specific nitrosamines(TSNA),and N-nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA)were summarized.The information of daily tobacco consumption of smokers in 30 provinces of China was also collected.Then,the intakes of NNN,NNK,NAT,NAB,TSNAs,and NDMA via tobacco smoke were estimated as 1534ng/day,591 ng/day,685 ng/day,81 ng/day,2543 ng/day,and 484 ng/day by adult smokers in30 provinces,respectively.The cancer risk(CR)values for NNN and NNK inhalation intake were further calculated as 1.44×10^(-5)and 1.95×10^(-4).The CR value for NDMA intake via tobacco smoke(inhalation:1.66×10^(-4))indicates that NDMA is similarly dangerous in tobacco smoke when compared with the TSNAs.In China,the CR values caused by average nitrosamines intake via various exposures and their order can be estimated as the following:smoke(3.75×10^(-4))>food(1.74×10^(-4))>drinking water(1.38×10^(-5)).Smokers in China averagely suffer 200%of extra cancer risk caused by nitrosamines in tobacco when compared with non-smokers.

Urethral stricture is characterized by the chronic formation of fibrous tissue,leading to the narrowing of the urethral lumen.Despite the availability of various endoscopic treatments,the recurrence of urethral strictures remains a common challenge.Postsurgery pharmacotherapy targeting tissue fibrosis is a promising option for reducing recurrence rates.Although drugs cannot replace surgery,they can be used as adjuvant therapies to improve outcomes.In this regard,many drugs have been proposed based on the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of urethral stricture.Ongoing studies have obtained substantial progress in treating urethral strictures,highlighting the potential for improved drug effectiveness through appropriate clinical delivery methods.Therefore,this review summarizes the latest researches on the mechanisms related to the pathophysiology of urethral stricture and the drugs to provide a theoretical basis and new insights for the effective use and future advancements in drug therapy for urethral stricture.

The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a powerful model system for studying the cell polarity establishment.The cell polarization process is regulated by signaling molecules,which are initially distributed in the cytoplasm and then recruited to a proper location on the cell membrane in response to spatial cues or spontaneously.Polarization of these signaling molecules involves complex regulation,so the mathematical models become a useful tool to investigate the mechanism behind the process.In this review,we discuss how mathematical modeling has shed light on different regulations in the cell polarization.We also propose future applications for the mathematical modeling of cell polarization and morphogenesis.
