Objective:To investigate the effects of smoking of dried leaves of Carica papaya(pawpaw)based on ethnopharmacological information which indicated that smoking of papaya leaves could influence motor performance and ***:Twenty-four rats were used for the study,and were grouped into four *** 1served as the control(not exposed to papaya leaves smoke),while Groups 2,3 and 4 were exposed to smoke from 6.25 g,12.50 g and 18.75 g of dry pawpaw leaves respectively in a smoking chamber twice daily for 21 d with each exposure lasting for 3 ***,hippocampus was harvested in each group for histological ***:The results showed that there were significant(P<0.05)increases in mean of recall latencies of long-term spatial memory in the animal administered the high dose while the other groups had significantly(P<0.05)lower *** investigation showed signs of mild neural degeneration in high dose group and hypochromic appcarance of the Nissl substance in all treated ***:In conclusion,the findings from this study has demonstrated that smoking of papaya leaves has the ability to maintain an intact long-term spatial memory at all doses but retrieving such memory is faster with the low and medium dosages.

Objective： Anocardium occidentale L. leaf is useful in the treatment of inflammation and asthma, but the bioactive constituents responsible for these activities have not been characterized. Therefore, this study was aimed at identifying the bioactive constituent（s） ofA. occidentale ethanolic leaf extract （AOEL） and its solvent-soluble portions, and evaluating their effects on histamine-induced paw edema and bronchocon- striction. Methods： The bronchodilatory effect was determined by measuring the percentage protection provided by plant extracts in the histamine-induced bronchoconstriction model in guinea pigs. The anti- inflammatory effect of the extracts on histamine-induced paw edema in rats was determined by measur- ing the increase in paw diameter, after which the percent edema inhibition was calculated. The extracts were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify the bioactive constituents. Column chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used respectively to isolate and characterize the constituents. The bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activities of the isolated bioactive constituent were evaluated. Results： Histamine induced bronchoconstriction in the guinea pigs and edema in the rat paw. AOEL, hexane-soluble portion of AOEL, ethyl acetate-soluble portion of AOEL, and chloroform-soluble portion of AOEL significantly increased bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activities （P 〈 0.05）. Oleamide （9-octadecenamide） was identified as the most abundant compound in the extracts and was isolated. Oleamide significantly increased bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activities by 32.97% and 98.41%, respectively （P 〈 0.05）. Conclusion： These results indicate that oleamide is one of the bioactive constituents responsible for the bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activity of A. occidentale leaf, and can therefore be employed in the management of bronchoconstriction and inflammation.

目的:研究蜂蜜对大鼠急慢性炎症及一氧化氮生成的作用。方法:使用角叉菜胶法、棉球法及甲醛致炎症法定量测定蜂蜜的抗炎症功效。硝基左旋精氨酸甲酯皮下注射(100mg/kg)及左旋精氨酸腹腔内注射(300mg/kg)检验蜂蜜对于大鼠一氧化氮生成的作用。在每个实验中,大鼠均被分为5组,每组5只大鼠。空白对照组及阳性对照组大鼠分别给予蒸馏水及消炎痛(5mg/kg)口服,其余3组大鼠分别给予2、6及10g/kg蜂蜜口服。结果:在角叉菜胶所致大鼠炎症模型实验中,与对照组比较,蜂蜜显著降低了大鼠后爪的肿胀程度(P<0.05);在棉球致大鼠肉芽肿瘤模型实验中,与对照组比较,蜂蜜显著降低了肉芽肿瘤的重量(P<0.05);在甲醛所致大鼠炎症模型实验中,与对照组比较,蜂蜜显著缓解了大鼠关节炎的症状(P<0.05)。在检测一氧化氮生成的实验中,硝基左旋精氨酸甲酯显著抑制了大鼠后爪的肿胀,而左旋精氨酸拮抗了蜂蜜及硝基左旋精氨酸甲酯的抗炎作用。结论:本实验的研究结果证明了蜂蜜的抗炎症作用,这可能与其抑制一氧化氮的生成有关。据此,蜂蜜可能可以被应用于某些急慢性炎症的治疗当中。

The study investigated the genetic variation of Parachanna obscura from five rivers(Anambra,Ibbi,Imo,Katsina-Ala and Ogun)in Nigeria using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 *** was extracted from 19,22,16,18 and 21 fin clips per river population,respectively and subjected to polymerase chain reaction.A total of 96 sequences,each with 671 bp were obtained with 38(5.6%)polymorphic,27(3.8%)parsimoniously informative and 659(98.2%)conserved *** nucleotide composition was C=28.07%,T=29.43%,A=22.18%,G=20.32%.A total of 40 haplotypes with 38 unique sequences as well as 24 substitutions with 22 transversions and two transitions were *** diversity among populations ranged from 0.00184 to 0.00888 representing Ibbi and Imo,respectively while haplotype diversity ranged from 0.77056 to 0.95000 also,from Ibbi and Imo,*** of molecular variance showed that the intra-population variation accounted for 50.05%.Topology from phylogenetic analyses revealed that *** from Imo River was distinctly different from the rest.

Groundwater Evolution, Hydrochemical Facies and Quality Evaluation for Irrigation Use in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria

Hydrochemical facies, groundwater evolution, and physicochemical reactions between soil or rock and water are of considerable importance when evaluating or predicting the nature of anthropogenic impacts on groundwater quality. In this respect a total of 67 ground water samples were collected randomly in Akure, southwestern, Nigeria from hand pump/dug wells and analyzed for major cations and anions. The domination of cations and anions was in the order of Ca2+ > K+ > Na+ > Mg2+ and ?> Cl- > ?> ?respectively. The pH and Eh of the water samples show an acidic condition, with low salinity hazard (generally less than 250 μS/cm). The Piper classification for hydrogeochemical facies indicates carbonate hardness (secondary alkalinity) exceeds 50% that is by alkaline earths and weak acids, with Ca2+ + Mg2+ + ?water-type. This also suggests a meteoric origin of water quality caused by rock-water interaction. The ratio of ?and Cl- is greater than 1 and implies recharge area or upper water flow course of carbonate rocks (interaction of water with aquifer material). The Na+:Cl- is less than 0.7 signifying loss of Na+ through precipitation of evaporating water;the water is Ca2+ rich and Na+ depleted with Mg2+:Ca2+ less than 0.5 and Na+:K+ less than 15. The Na+:Ca2+ (<1) indicates reverse ionic exchange. The Ca2+:?+ ?for the samples is less than 1.0 suggestive of flow of water through the normal hydrological cycle. The calculated range of values of sodium absorption ratio (1.89 - 26.42), permeability index (42.67 - 170.24), residue sodium carbonate (-1 to 5), magnesium ratio (4 - 53), Kelly ratio (0.04 - 0.84), percent sodium (0.41 - 3.45) suggest good water suitable for irrigation purposes. In addition, the Wilcox plot shows that 98% of the water samples belong to “good to permissible category” for irrigation use.

Homogeneously Catalyzed Transesterification of Nigerian <i>Jatropha curcas</i>Oil into Biodiesel: A Kinetic Study

As a follow-up to our previous study on the transesterification of Nigerian Jatropha curcas oil into Biodiesel using homogenous catalysis, kinetic study of the reaction is hereby presented. The kinetic study revealed that the rate of formation of biodiesel can be increased by increasing reaction temperature and oil to alcohol molar ratio. The optimum reaction condition was established to be 60°C (reaction temperature) and 1:6 (oil to alcohol ratio). Accordingly, the highest biodiesel yield obtained from homogeneously catalyzed transesterification of Nigerian Jatropha curcas (JC) oil into Biodiesel was 86.61% w/w at 60°C with oil to alcohol ratio of 1:6. Furthermore, kinetic study also revealed that conversion of triglyceride to diglyceride was the rate determining step (RDS) of the overall reaction because activation energy of its backward reaction is lower than that of the forward reaction, indicating unstable nature and higher potential energy of the diglyceride in comparison to the triglyceride.
