Deep-Sea Benthic Foraminiferal Distribution in South West Indian Ocean: Implications to Paleoecology

Five grab samples from the southwestern part of the Indian ocean were collected by ORV Sagar Kanya during the third expedition to the southern Indian ocean in June 2009. The sediment samples have been analyzed and recorded 36 benthic foraminiferal species belonging to 21 genera and 3 suborders. All the species were taxonomically identified, SEM photographed and illustrated. Deep sea-benthic foraminiferal species at different locations of South of West India Ocean (3150-4125 m water depth) is examined in terms of number of species (n) and diversity (d). The observed depth ranges of benthic foraminifera have been documented to recognize their bathymetric distribution. The valves of these parameters reached their maximum at 3190 m water depth. Productivity continued in the Indo-Pacific Ocean (the biogenic boom) and the Oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) intensified over large parts of Indian Ocean continually. The diversity values show more abrupt trend as depth increases. Species like Epistominella exigua and Pullenia bulloides occur at both 3150 m & 3465 m depths indicating depth persistence. Further, Oridorsalis umbonatus and Melonis sphaeroides occur at both 3150 m & 3465 m depths. Species like Gyroidina sp an indicate of low oxygen environment and Uvigerina hispida-costata indicative of high organic carbon are found to occur at 3150 m & 3740 m respectively. Factor analysis and Pearson correlation matrix was performed on foraminiferal census data of 10 highest ranked species which are present in at least one sample. 3 factors were obtained accounting for 72.81% of the total variance. Thus the study suggests that fluctuations in species diversity at the locations of the present study were related to changes in productivity during the geological past. Further, the faunal data do indicate the early Holocene Indian Ocean was influenced by increased ventilation perhaps by North Atlantic deep water and or circumpolar deep waters.

Assessment of heavy metal pollution from the sediment of Tupilipalem Coast,southeast coast of India

Sediment from twelve stations was sampled from the Tupilipalem Coast, southeast coast of India, and the presence of a set of heavy metals was established including iron(Fe), manganese(Mn), chromium(Cr),copper(Cu), nickel(Ni), lead(Pb), zinc(Zn) and cadmium(Cd). The heavy metals were assessed by factor analysis, the results of which showed positive and/or negative correlations among Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb,Zn, and Cd. Factor analysis also indicated that heavy metals in the sediments of the study area have different natural and anthropogenic sources. Similarly, a sediment pollution assessment was done using the Geoaccumulation Index(Igeo), Enrichment Factor(EF), and Pollution Load Index(PLI). The Geoaccumulation Index indicated that the surface sediment of the Tupilipalem Coast was extremely contaminated with Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The calculation of enrichment factors showed a significant enrichment with respect to Pb, Zn, and Cd and a moderate enrichment with Cr, Cu, and Ni. The falling trend of average contents’ enrichment factors is Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Mn > Fe. The PLI values of the Cd show higher(> 1) values due to the influence of distinct external sources like agricultural runoff, industrial activities, and other anthropogenic inputs. Ninety two percent of heavy metals under study showed the highest concentrations at station TP-5 where the Buckingham Canal and other agricultural and aquacultural effluents connect with the Bay of Bengal. This location is the second inlet which is periodically closed and it seemed that these parts of the study area are heavily affected by anthropogenic pollution.

Impact of Dredging on Sediment of Krishnapatnam Port, East Coast of India： Implications for Marine Biodiversity

This paper synthesizes the extent and nature of scientific information about how dredging activities potentially affect habitats and key ecological functions supporting recruitment and sustainability of estuarine and marine environment. Fourteen samples were collected after dredging （2008） from fixed sampling stations. The impact on community was estimated at species level （Foraminifera, Protozoan, using statistical analysis）. The maximum negative effect on benthic foraminifera was reduction by 60%, for species richness and by 50% for diversity. This data were compared with the data obtained before dredging （2006） in a time services spanning 2 years. Its revealed that reestablishment of directly with in less than 3 months of the end of dredging, although affected foraminifera and of physico-chemical substrate characteristic 2 years later there was a considerable improvement of whole faunal community. Statistical treatment was given to the data sets to know the relation among parameters. Before, this type of activity is undertaken, each case should be studied regarding viability, the environmental medium where it will take place, the best time of year, and the type of dredging to be used. Small-patch dredging operations are proposed when ever possible, since they allow a quick readjustment of the initial sediment structure and benthic foraminifera. These findings will help to underpin improved planning of management strategies for dredging operations in India and other countries.

Swarnamukhi is an east flowing river having a total length of 130 km. This is an inde- pendent river which rises at an elevation of 300 m in the eastern Ghats ranges near Pakala village in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India. This study was carried out using multitemporal satellite images of IRS P6 LISS-III and Landsat 80LUTIRS data from 2011 to 2015. The subsequent short term river mouth dynamics, coastal erosion and accretion rates have been calculated for the years between 2011 and 2015. Low river inflow, wind, tides, movement of the waves and littoral currents play a key role in the dynamic activities of erosion and accretion. The erosion rate from 2011 to 2015 was slightly decreased from 0.081 to 0.027 km2. The total net rate of accretion was estimated at 0.438 km2. The study shows during last five years （2011-2015） accretion is more than the erosion. High fluctu- ation of erosion and accretion are characteristics for the short term scale at river mouth.
