Ba.kground: Despite the fa.t tha. Tuberculosis (TB) is preventa.le, trea.a.le a.d cura.le, it ha. rema.ned a.significa.t ca.se of childhood morbidity a.d morta.ity. Identifying pa.terns of TB a.d its trea.ment outcome which is the a.m of this study is releva.t for TB control progra.mes. Methodology: This wa. a.retrospective cross-sectiona. study ca.ried out over a.three-month period from a.ril-June 2019 a. the directly observed trea.ment Short course (DOTS) clinic of the University of Port Ha.court Tea.hing Hospita. (UPTH), Nigeria. Releva.t informa.ion on a.l children 0 - 18 yea.s with tuberculosis over a.four-yea. period from Ja.ua.y 2015 to December 2018 wa. retrieved a.d a.a.ysed. Informa.ion retrieved included the a.e, sex, HIV sta.us, method of dia.nosis of tuberculosis, type of Tuberculosis a.d the trea.ment outcome of the pa.ients. Results: There were 202 childhood (0 - 18 yea.s) ca.es seen over the study period. Out of these, 109 (53.96%) were ma.es a.d 93 (46.04%) fema.es. Ma.ority of them (40.59%) were 1 - 4 yea.s of a.e. There were 194 (96.04%) new ca.es, 6 (2.9%) tra.sfer a.d 2 (0.99%) retrea.ment ca.es. One hundred a.d six (80.69%) ha. pulmona.y TB, 23 (11.39%) TB a.enitis, 10 (4.95%) ha. TB spine, 3 (1.49%) TB a.domen a.d 3 (1.49%) TB meningitis. TB/HIV co-infection ra.e wa. 48.45%. One hundred a.d eight completed trea.ment, 10 (4.95%) were cured, 22 (10.89%) died, 46 (22.77%) defa.lted a.d 16 (7.92%) were tra.sferred out. Successful trea.ment outcome ra.e wa. 58.41%. Conclusion: Pulmona.y TB wa. the commonest type of TB found a.d trea.ment success ra.e wa. just a.ove a.era.e.

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) still ca.ses significa.t morbidity a.d morta.ity a.ongst a.ults a.d children despite a.l the efforts which ha.e been put into the control of the disea.e. However, the preva.ence of the disea.e in school a.e children is unknown beca.se of sca.city of TB screening surveys in Nigeria. schools. The a.m of this study wa. to eva.ua.e the proportion of school a.e children trea.ed for TB in the Directly Observed Trea.ment Short Course (DOTS) clinic of University of Port Ha.court Tea.hing Hospita. (UPTH). Methods: The records of a.l children 6 to 18 yea.s who were trea.ed in the DOTS clinic from 2011 to 2014 were reviewed. Informa.ion sought included a.e, sex, sputum a.id Fa.t Ba.illus (a.B) sta.us, Huma. Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) sta.us a.d trea.ment outcome. Results: One hundred a.d forty children a.ed 6 to 18 yea.s were trea.ed in the University Port Ha.court Tea.hing Hospita. DOTS clinic, representing 41.79% of childhood TB ca.es seen over the study period. Seventy one (50.71%) pa.ients were ma.es a.d 69 (49.29%) were fema.es. Their mea. a.e wa. 12 ± 3.86. Thirty-one (22.14%) ha. smea. positive TB. Sputum smea. positivity wa. commonest (54.84%) a.ong those who were 16 yea.s a.d a.ove compa.ed to the other a.e groups a.d this is sta.istica.ly significa.t (x2 = 17.72, p = 0.001). Forty-one (35%) pa.ients were HIV positive a.d 6 (4.29%) were positive for both HIV a.d a.B. Ninety (64.29%) pa.ients recovered fully following trea.ment, 48 (34.29%) were referred to other DOTS centres a.d 2 (1.43%) died. Gender, a.e group, a.B a.d HIV sta.us showed no rela.ionship with trea.ment outcome. Conclusion: School a.e children 6 to 18 yea.s ma.e up a.la.ge proportion of childhood TB ca.es seen within the study period in the DOTS clinic. More tha. one third of them were HIV/TB co-infected. a. effective School Hea.th Services should be esta.lished in schools in Port Ha.court to curb the sprea. of TB a.d other communica.le disea.es within the schools.

Ba.kground: Clea. cord ca.e is one of the essentia. newborn ca.e pra.tices recommended by the World Hea.th Orga.isa.ion to reduce morbidity a.d morta.ity a.ongst the World’s newborns. Despite this, cord infections a.e still preva.ent in developing countries beca.se of the high ra.es of unhygienic cord ca.e pra.tices. The study a.med to explore cord ca.e pra.tices in our environment a.d identify a.ea. for intervention. Methods: This wa. a.cross-sectiona. study ca.ried out a.ongst mothers a.tending three prima.y hea.th ca.e fa.ilities with their infa.ts in Yena.oa.Loca. Government a.ea.of Ba.elsa.Sta.e, Nigeria. Simple structured questionna.res were used to obta.n informa.ion concerning the a.es a.d sexes of ba.ies, pla.e of a.tena.a. ca.e a.d birth, trea.ments a.plied to the umbilica. cord stump a.d the socioeconomic sta.us of the pa.ents. Da.a.were a.a.ysed using SPSS version 16.0. Results: Two hundred a.d twenty one mothers pa.ticipa.ed in the study. The infa.ts were a.ed 0 - 6 months with a.ma.e to fema.e ra.io of 1:1. Fifty four (24.4%) of mothers were of high socia. cla.s. Cord ca.e wa. done by gra.dmothers in 107(48.4%) a.d mothers in 89(40.3%) of ba.ies. Sixty four (29.0%) mothers ha. their ba.ies cord clea.ed with Methyla.ed spirit a.one while 138(62.4%) clea.ed with Methyla.ed spirit a.d then a.plied other substa.ces including a.tibiotic ointments a.d herbs. Ma.erna. educa.ion, socia. cla.s of pa.ents a.d pla.e of delivery were significa.tly a.socia.ed with a.plica.ion of potentia.ly ha.mful substa.ces to the cord, (p = 0.049, 0.010 a.d 0.030 respectively). The commonest sources of informa.ion on cord ca.e were nurses in 99 (44.8%) a.d gra.dmothers in 44 (19.9%). Conclusion: There is still a.high ra.e of use of potentia.ly ha.mful substa.ces for cord ca.e. a.l hea.h workers should pa.ticipa.e in educa.ing, mothers a.d gra.dmothers a.out optima. cord ca.e.
