Incoherent scatter radars near magnetic equator regularly measured a vertical shear in zonal drifts of the evening background plasma,with westward drifts below the equatorial F region peak and eastward drifts *** report here observations of a clear shear structure in the zonal drifts of 3 m irregularities inside spread F(SF) backscatter plumes measured with a 47.5 MHz coherent scatter radar operated at a low-latitude site Sanya(18.4°N,109.6°E;dip latitude 12.8°N).The radar interferometry analysis on the zonal drifts of the 3 m irregularities yields results consistent with that estimated from the irregularity echo Doppler velocity measurements with multiple *** is shown that the SF 3 m irregularities move westward at the lowest altitudes,while at higher altitudes in the same SF plume structure,the 3 m irregularities drift *** interesting point is that the vertical shear of zonal drifts was centered at 00 km altitude over Sanya,which maps to an apex altitude of 50 km at magnetic equator and is thus apparently higher than the apex altitudes250–450 km where the zonal velocity shear has usually been *** of the observations suggests that while the possibility of local generation of the shear flow of the irregularities can exist,the possibility of a plasma vortex appearing at relative high altitudes causing the zonal drift shear of F region 3 m irregularities measured over Sanya cannot be totally ruled out.

Multiple instrumental observations including GPS total electron content(TEC),fF and hFfrom ionosondes,vertical ion drift measurements from Communication/Navigation Outage Forecasting System,magnetometer data,and far ultraviolet airglow measured by Thermosphere,Ionosphere,Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics/Global Ultraviolet Imager(TIMED/GUVI) are used to investigate the profound ionospheric disturbances at midlatitude and low latitude during the 14-17 July 2012 geomagnetic storm event,which was featured by prolonged southward interplanetary geomagnetic field component for about 30 h below-10 *** the East Asian/Australian sector,latitudinal profile of TEC variations in the main phase were characterized by three bands of increments and separated by weak depressions in the equatorial ionospheric anomaly(EIA) crest regions,which were caused by the combined effects of disturbance dynamo electric fields(DDEF) and equatorward neutral *** the recovery phase,strong inhibition of EIA occurred and the summer crest of EIA disappeared on 16 July due to the combined effects of intrusion of neutral composition disturbance zone as shown by the TIMED/GUVI 0/N measurements and long-lasting daytime westward DDEF inferred from the equatorial electrojet *** transit time of DDEF over the dip equator from westward to eastward is around 2200 *** the American longitude,the salient ionospheric disturbances in the summer hemisphere were characterized by daytime periodical intrusion of negative phase for three consecutive days in the recovery phase,preceded by storm-enhanced density plume in the initial *** addition,multiple short-lived prompt penetration electric fields appeared during stable southward interplanetary magnetic field(IMF) B in the recovery phase and were responsible for enhanced the EIA and equatorial ionospheric uplift around sunset.

[1]This article proposes a technique to map the tidal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere(MLT) region from the observations of a four-station meteor radar chain located at middle- and low-latitudes along the 120°E meridian in the Northern Hemisphere. In this study,we employed the non-uniform rational B-splines surface technique to develop a provisional horizontal wind model of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere at altitudes of 87,97,and 250 km over Kelan(38.7°N,111.6°E) in China using Fabry–Perot interferometer(FPI) observations for the period between January 2012 and May *** compared the meridional and zonal winds derived from the Kelan FPI wind model with those based on Meteor Radar wind observations at Beijing(39.92°N,116.39°E),and those calculated from horizontal wind models,i.e.,HWM93 and HWM07,at *** analysis showed the following.(1) At 87 and 97 km,the Kelan FPI wind patterns exhibited strong annual variation in the meridional wind and semiannual variation in the zonal wind,as well as diurnal variation,which was dominated by a semidiurnal tidal variation in the meridional and zonal winds during May and September with a diurnal phase *** Kelan FPI wind patterns agreed well with the Meteor Radar winds and the HWM07 model results,but less well with the HWM93 model.(2) At 250 km,the FPI wind patterns agreed fairly well with the HWM93 results,where both indicated annual/diurnal variation in the meridional and zonal winds,and weak semidiurnal tidal *** were large discrepancies between the Kelan FPI winds and the HWM07 model results,which were mainly due to differences in the annual variation in the nighttime meridional wind.(3) The magnitude of the FPI winds was comparable to the HWM93 results but they were nearly 40–50% lower than the other winds,which is attributable to the inherent limitations of airglow ***,this local empirical wind model could be used to investigate the climatological features of local ionospheric spatial–temporal variations.

A 47.5 MHz VHF radar with a peak power of 24 kW has been operated at Sanya(18°N,109°E,dip 13°N) in Hainan Island,China since February *** from the continuous observations of F-region irregularities by the VHF radar,an ionosonde and a GPS scintillation/TEC receiver during the equinoctial and June solstitial months of 2009-2010 have been *** is found that the F-region 3-m scale field aligned irregularities(FAIs) appeared frequently at post-sunset hours during equinox but initiated mostly at midnight/post-midnight in June *** of FAIs with GPS scintillations, TEC fluctuations and spread-F shows that the equinoctial FAIs coincided well with GPS scintillations and TEC fast depletions,which are associated with the development of equatorial plasma bubbles(EPBs).However,for the June solstitial FAIs,the simultaneous Communication/Navigation Outage Forecasting System(C/NOFS) satellite in situ density measurements show that some post-midnight FAI structures over Sanya may originate from equatorial F-region and then extend to Sanya latitude along magnetic field lines,but the others could resemble the irregularities of localized origin,not associated with the equatorial *** types of post-midnight FAIs during June solstice are not accompanied by GPS scintillations and TEC depletions,but are associated with the occurrence of *** mechanisms responsible for the occurrence of post-midnight FAIs without GPS scintillations over Sanya have been discussed.

The data observed by a spectral airglow temperature imager(SATI) at Beijing National Observatory of Space Environment from July 23,2008 to July 31,2009 are used to study night mesopause temperature in *** variations of temperature at 87 and 94 km obtained from OII(6-2) and O(0-1) airglow spectra,temperature at night is shown lowest in the summer and highest in the *** summer,average temperature at 87 km is 173.9 K,lower than average temperature 180.1 K at 94 km But in winter,average temperature at 87 km is 201.2 K,higher than average temperature 194.8 K at 94 *** altitude of mesopause in Beijing is below 87 km in summer and above 94 km in *** are about 120-150 days when the mesopause locates below 87 km,which is in agreement with the results of SABER/*** of temperatures at 87 and 94 km are analyzed by harmonic *** results show that amplitudes of annual oscillation of temperature at 87 and 94 km are 17.5 and 7.8 K respectively. Amplitudes of semi-annual oscillation at 87 and 94 km are 1.6 and 5.3 K,which are smaller than those of annual oscillation. Although there are differences among different observations because of different locations and different instruments,our results are in general agreement with observation at similar latitude as Beijing.

Chapman scale height is a valuable key parameter measuring the shape of the profile of plasma density in the F layer ***,the data of Chapman scale height are routinely derived from ionogram observations at many ionosonde stations in terms of the SAO explorer *** this report,we collected the in situ observations of plasma density at altitudes around 600 km from the ROCSAT-1 satellite and of simultaneous F peak parameters from an ionosonde operated at Wuhan(30.6°N,114.4°E),a low-latitude station in central China,to estimate the topside plasma density profiles by using the Chapman a function and further retrieve Chapman scale *** solar cycle,seasonal variation,and local time variation are presented in the retrieved Chapman scale height over *** climatological features of the derived Chapman scale height are significantly different from those from the ground-based *** significant discrepancy suggests that further improvements are required in the present extrapolating topside electron density profiles from ionosonde ***,the attempt to constructing plasma density profiles through combining ionosonde and satellite in situ observations provides a new way to reanalyze observations from different sources and normalize plasma density recorded at varying altitudes to specified altitudes,which is critical and more convenient for ionospheric climatology studies.
