Interactive effect of dietary vitamin E and inorganic mercury on growth performance and bioaccumulation of mercury in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus treated with mercuric chloride

A 6-week feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin E(DL-a-tocopheryl acetate, TA) on growth and mercury(Hg) accumulation in juvenile olive flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus)treated with mercuric chloride(Hgcl_2). Vitamin E and Hgcl_2 were added to the semi-purified basal *** semi-purified diets in a 2 × 3 factorial design were formulated to contain 2 levels of Hg(0 or 20 mg Hgcl_2/kg diet) and 3 levels of vitamin E(0, 100, or 200 mg TA/kg diet). Experimental fish(n = 360,9.99 ± 0.15 g) were randomly allocated into 30-L tanks at a density of 20 fish per tank with 3 replicates in each treatment and were fed twice a day. At the end of the feeding trial, dietary Hg depressed the growth performances in terms of weight gain(WG), specific growth rate(SGR), feed efficiency(FE) and protein efficiency ratio(PER) in fish, while fish fed the diets supplemented with vitamin E showed significant growth improvement in both presence and absence of Hgcl_2 in the diets(P cted in fish fed the experimental diets. Whole body compositions of fish such as lipid and moisture contents were influenced by dietary vitamin E supplementation. Total Hg contents of muscle, liver and kidney tissues were significantly reduced in fish fed diets supplemented with vitamin E(Pcreasing Hg concentration has resulted in a reduction in vitamin *** body fatty acids of fish like eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) contents were decreased by dietary Hg. However, supplementation of dietary vitamin E improved the a-linolenic acid(ALA) and EPA contents in fish. Our results suggest that dietary supplementation of vitamin E has potential effects on growth improvement and ameliorating inorganic Hg bioaccumulation in juvenile olive flounder.

ULTRASONIc SEPARATION OF MIcRO-SIZED INcLUSIONS IN MOLTEN METAL

The coagulation time and position of micro-sized non-metallic inclusions in molten metal during ultrasonic separation process were investigated, and the motion course of micro-sized non-metallic inclusions in an ultrasonic standing wave field was numerically simulated. The results of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that the movement of inclusions depends on the balance between the acoustic radiation force, effective buoyancy force and viscous drag force. It is presented that micro-sized inclusions, agglomerated at antinode-planes may be removed further with horizon tal ultrasound.``

Different cell kinetic changes in rat stomach cancer after treatment with celecoxib or indomethacin: Implications on chemoprevention

AIM: Mechanisms underlying the chemopreventive effects of cyclooxygenase (cOX) inhibitors remain elusive. We have previously shown that celecoxib but not indomethacin could prevent carcinogen-induced gastric cancer development in Wistar rats. This chemopreventive effect appeared to be independent of cOX-2 and prostaglandin (PG) E2 suppression since the lowest PGE2 was obtained in indomethacin *** study compared the cell kinetic changes in stomachs of rats after treatment with celecoxib (5, 10, 20 mg/(kg·d)) or indomethacin (3 mg/(kg·d)) to gain more insights into the chemopreventive ***: The apoptosis and proliferation indexes in gastric tumor, adjacent non-cancer tissues and normal gastric tissues were determined. Apoptosis was quantified by apoptotic nuclei counting and TUNEL, whereas proliferation was determined by Ki67 ***: Treatment with either celecoxib or indomethacin inhibited gastric tumor proliferation by more than 65% (P＜0.02). However, celecoxib caused a dose-dependent increase in apoptosis (P＜0.05) which was not seen in indomethacin-treated tumors (P = 0.54). The highest apoptosis to proliferation ratio was seen in tumors treated with celecoxib at 10 mg/(kg·d). Treatment with this dose of celecoxib was associated with the lowest incidence of gastric cancer ***: Our findings suggest that the difference in chemopreventive effects of indomethacin and celecoxib in this animal model of gastric carcinogenesis is largely due to the differential cell kinetic changes, which does not correlate with the degree of cOX-2 and PG suppression.

The inherent noise in positron emission tomography (PET) leads to the instability of quantitative indicators, which may affect the diagnostic accuracy for differentiating malignant and benign lesions in the management of lung cancer. In this paper, the reliability of retention index (RI) is systematically investigated by using computer simulation for the dual-time-point imaging protocol. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROc) curve is used to evaluate the optimal protocol. Results demonstrate that the reliability of RI is affected by several factors including noise level, lesion type, and imaging schedule. The RIs with small absolute values suffer from worse reliability than those larger ones. The results of ROc curves show that over delayed second scan cannot help to improve the diagnostic performance further, while an early first scan is expected. The method of optimization based on ROc analysis can be easily extended to comprise as many lesions as possible.

AIM: To establish the diagnostic performance of sev-eral serological tests, individually and in combination, for diagnosing celiac disease (cD) in patients with different pretest probabilities, and to explore potential se- rological algorithms to reduce the necessity for biopsy. METHODS: We prospectively performed duodenal biopsy and serology in 679 adults who had either high risk (n = 161) or low risk (n = 518) for cD. Blood samples were tested using six assays (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) that detected antibodies to tissue transglutaminase (tTG) and deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP). RESULTS: cD prevalence was 39.1% in the high-risk population and 3.3% in the low-risk group. In high-risk patients, all individual assays had a high diagnostic efficacy [area under receiving operator characteristic curves (AU ROc): 0.968 to 0.999]. In contrast, assays had a lower diagnostic efficacy (AU ROc: 0.835 to 0.972) in the low-risk group. Using assay combinations, it would be possible to reach or rule out diagnosis of cD without biopsy in 92% of cases in both pretest populations. We observed that the new DGP/tTG Screen assay resulted in a surplus compared to more conventional assays in any clinical situation. cONcLUSION: The DGP/tTG Screen assay could be considered as the best initial test for cD. combinations of two tests, including a DGP/tTG Screen, might be able to diagnose cD accurately in different clinical scenarios making biopsy avoidable in a high proportion of subjects.

Effect of optical penetration on laser generatedthermoelastic ultrasound in solids

The effect of optical penetration on laser thermoelastically-generated ultrasound in non-metallic solids is studied theoretically on the basis of the thermoelastie equations. In one-dimensional model, on the assumption of some finite laser penetration, the general expression of wave displacement is obtaincd by solving the thermal diffusion and thermoelastic displacement equations, from which the influencc of optical absorption on the displacement amplitude is analyzed. In the case of two-dimensional axial symmetry, on neglecting the thermal diffusion, we solve the thermoelastic wave equation by means of the integral transform method and obtain analytic expressions of the wave displacement components in the *** patterns of both longitudinal and shear waves are presented and discussed.

The structure of bcc-Fe80cu20 solid solution produced by mechanical alloying of the elemental bcc-Fe and fcc-cu powders has been studied using X-ray diffraction and the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) techniques. The disappearance of elemental Fe and cu X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks and the presence of bcc structural XRD peaks illustrate the formation of a nanocrystalline single-phase bcc-Fe80cu20 solid solution. From the EXAFS result, the clear observation of cu atoms taking on bcc coordination in the solid solution and Fe atoms remaining bcc structure further verifies the reality of atomic alloying between Fe and cu atoms and the lattice change of cu from fcc to bcc. However, the supersaturated bcc solid solution is not chemically uniform, i.e., some regions are rich in Fe atoms and other regions rich in cu atoms.

Boosting bidirectional sulfur conversion enabled by introducing boron-doped atoms and phosphorus vacancies in Ni2P for lithium-sulfur batteries

Lithium-sulfur （Li-S） batteries have gained great attention due to the high theoretical energy density and low cost,yet their further commercialization has been obstructed by the notorious shuttle effect and sluggish redox ***,we supply a strategy to optimize the electron structure of Ni2P by concurrently introducing B-doped atoms and P vacancies in Ni2P （Vp-B-Ni2P）,thereby enhancing the bidirectional sulfur *** study indicates that the simultaneous introduction of B-doped atoms and P vacancies in Ni2P causes the redistribution of electron around Ni atoms,bringing about the upward shift of d-band center of Ni atoms and effective d-p orbital hybridization between Ni atoms and sulfur species,thus strengthening the chemical anchoring for lithium polysulfides （LiPSs） as well as expediting the bidirectional conversion kinetics of sulfur ***,theoretical calculations reveal that the incorporation of B-doped atoms and P vacancies in Ni2P selectively promotes Li2S dissolution and nucleation ***,the Li-S batteries with Vp-B-Ni2P-separators present outstanding rate ability of 777 m A h g-1at 5 c and high areal capacity of 8.03 mA h cm-2under E/S of 5μL mg-1and sulfur loading of 7.20 mg *** work elucidates that introducing heteroatom and vacancy in metal phosphide collaboratively regulates the electron structure to accelerate bidirectional sulfur conversion.
