Faculty of health sciences students’knowledge and attitudes toward coronavirus disease 2019 during the first wave of the pandemic:A cross-sectional survey

Objective:The study aimed to determine the faculty of the health sciences students’knowledge and attitudes regarding the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional survey was completed with 317 undergraduate students of one health sciences faculty in Turkey.The data were collected between March 1,2020,and March 15,2020,by face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire created by the researchers.Number,percentage,mean,standard deviation,and Pearson Chi-square test were used to evaluate the data.Results:In this study,a high proportion of students answered questions about COVID-19 correctly.About 55.8%of the students took partial precautions against COVID-19 to protect themselves against COVID-19 and“frequent washing of hands”was the most common precaution.We determined that the main reasons for not taking any precautions against COVID-19 were“low number of cases in Turkey”and“getting irritated by the mask.”About 98.4%of the participants were entirely/partially following the news on COVID-19,with social media being the most commonly used medium.Female students took more protective measures than male students.The 1st-year students had more positive thoughts about vaccination compared to those in the other classes.Conclusions:Although the knowledge of the students about COVID-19 was good in the first wave of the pandemic,more than half of the students stated that they partially complied with the protective measures.

Targeting the RAS/RAF/MAPK pathway for cancer therapy: from mechanism to clinical studies

Metastatic dissemination of solid tumors,a leading cause of cancer-related mortality,underscores the urgent need for enhanced insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying metastasis,chemoresistance,and the mechanistic backgrounds of individuals whose cancers are prone to migration.The most prevalent signaling cascade governed by multi-kinase inhibitors is the mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)pathway,encompassing the RAS–RAF–MAPK kinase(MEK)–extracellular signal-related kinase(ERK)pathway.RAF kinase is a primary mediator of the MAPK pathway,responsible for the sequential activation of downstream targets,such as MEK and the transcription factor ERK,which control numerous cellular and physiological processes,including organism development,cell cycle control,cell proliferation and differentiation,cell survival,and death.Defects in this signaling cascade are associated with diseases such as cancer.RAF inhibitors(RAFi)combined with MEK blockers represent an FDAapproved therapeutic strategy for numerous RAF-mutant cancers,including melanoma,non-small cell lung carcinoma,and thyroid cancer.However,the development of therapy resistance by cancer cells remains an important barrier.Autophagy,an intracellular lysosome-dependent catabolic recycling process,plays a critical role in the development of RAFi resistance in cancer.Thus,targeting RAF and autophagy could be novel treatment strategies for RAF-mutant cancers.In this review,we delve deeper into the mechanistic insights surrounding RAF kinase signaling in tumorigenesis and RAFi-resistance.Furthermore,we explore and discuss the ongoing development of next-generation RAF inhibitors with enhanced therapeutic profiles.Additionally,this review sheds light on the functional interplay between RAF-targeted therapies and autophagy in cancer.

BACKGROUND Cerebral palsy(CP)describes a group of disorders affecting movement,balance,and posture.Disturbances in motor functions constitute the main body of CP symptoms.These symptoms surface in early childhood and patients are affected for the rest of their lives.Currently,treatment involves various pharmacotherapies for different types of CP,including antiepileptics for epilepsy and Botox A for focal spasticity.However,none of these methods can provide full symptom relief.This has prompted researchers to look for new treatment modalities,one of which is mesenchymal stem cell therapy(MSCT).Despite being a promising tool and offering a wide array of possibilities,mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)still need to be investigated for their efficacy and safety.AIM To analyze the efficacy and safety of MSCT in CP patients.METHODS Our sample consists of four CP patients who cannot stand or walk without external support.All of these cases received allogeneic MSCT six times as 1×106/kg intrathecally,intravenously,and intramuscularly using umbilical cord-derived MSCs(UC-MSC).We monitored and assessed the patients pre-and post-treatment using the Wee Functional Independence Measure(WeeFIM),Gross Motor Function Classification System(GMFCS),and Manual Ability Classification Scale(MACS)instruments.We utilized the Modified Ashworth Scale(MAS)to measure spasticity.RESULTS We found significant improvements in MAS scores after the intervention on both sides.Two months:Rightχ^(2)=4000,P=0.046,leftχ^(2)=4000,P=0.046;four months:Rightχ^(2)=4000,P=0.046,leftχ^(2)=4000,P=0.046;12 months:Rightχ^(2)=4000,P=0.046,leftχ^(2)=4000,P=0.046.However,there was no significant difference in motor functions based on WeeFIM results(P>0.05).GMFCS and MACS scores differed significantly at 12 months after the intervention(P=0.046,P=0.046).Finally,there was no significant change in cognitive functions(P>0.05).CONCLUSION In light of our findings,we believe that UC-MSC therapy has a positive effect on spasticity,and it partially improves motor functions.

BACKGROUND Traumatic brain injury(TBI)is characterized by a disruption in the normal function of the brain due to an injury following a trauma,which can potentially cause severe physical,cognitive,and emotional impairment.Stem cell transplantation has evolved as a novel treatment modality in the management of TBI,as it has the potential to arrest the degeneration and promote regeneration of new cells in the brain.Wharton’s Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells(WJ-MSCs)have recently shown beneficial effects in the functional recovery of neurological deficits.AIM To evaluate the safety and efficiency of MSC therapy in TBI.METHODS We present 6 patients,4 male and 2 female aged between 21 and 27 years who suffered a TBI.These 6 patients underwent 6 doses of intrathecal,intramuscular(i.m.)and intravenous transplantation of WJ-MSCs at a target dose of 1×106/kg for each application route.Spasticity was assessed using the Modified Ashworth scale(MAS),motor function according to the Medical Research Council Muscle Strength Scale,quality of life was assessed by the Functional Independence Measure(FIM)scale and Karnofsky Performance Status scale.RESULTS Our patients showed only early,transient complications,such as subfebrile fever,mild headache,and muscle pain due to i.***.injection,which resolved within 24 h.During the one year follow-up,no other safety issues or adverse events were reported.These 6 patients showed improvements in their cognitive abilities,muscle spasticity,muscle strength,performance scores and fine motor skills when compared before and after the intervention.MAS values,which we used to assess spasticity,were observed to statistically significantly decrease for both left and right sides(P<0.001).The FIM scale includes both motor scores(P<0.05)and cognitive scores(P<0.001)and showed a significant increase in pretest posttest analyses.The difference observed in the participants’Karnofsky Performance Scale values pre and post the intervention was statistically significant(P<0.001).CONCLUSION This study showed

Purpose: Low back pain (LBP), Gonarthrosis, knee, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome have been regarded as affecting more than three-quarters’ of individuals in their lifetime. The aim of this study was conducted to determine and compare the effects of topical patients with sand compared with control related to Gonarthrosis, LBP, knee, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome pain. Methods: This is a prospective case and control designed study based on 101 pain case with Sand and 101 control subjects. The interventional groups in addition either topical sand or without sand 2 months after the intervention were assessed. We assessed tolerability of an established pain perception scale by the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Categorical variables were compared using the chi-square (χ2) test. The paired t-test was used to compare the two groups before and after the intervention. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed for comparison of several group means. Results: The study was based on 202 patients, 41 males (20.3%) and 161 females (79.7%). There were statistically significant differences between subjects with and without Sand in term of Gonarthrosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis LBP, knee, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome pain (p = 0.033). Majority of patients were over age 55 years old (55%) and females 78 (77.2%). The mean score of total pain experience before and after the intervention was 7.41 ± 1.1 for black sand, and 4.24 ± 2.38 for without sand as control group. Smart and collaborative industrial IoT: A federated learning and data space approach

Industry 4.0 has become a reality by fusing the Industrial Internet of Things(IIoT)and Artificial Intelligence(AI),providing huge opportunities in the way manufacturing companies operate.However,the adoption of this paradigm shift,particularly in the field of smart factories and production,is still in its infancy,suffering from various issues,such as the lack of high-quality data,data with high-class imbalance,or poor diversity leading to inaccurate AI models.However,data is severely fragmented across different silos owned by several parties for a range of reasons,such as compliance and legal concerns,preventing discovery and insight-driven IIoT innovation.Notably,valuable and even vital information often remains unutilized as the rise and adoption of AI and IoT in parallel with the concerns and challenges associated with privacy and security.This adversely influences interand intra-organization collaborative use of IIoT data.To tackle these challenges,this article leverages emerging multi-party technologies,privacy-enhancing techniques(e.g.,Federated Learning),and AI approaches to present a holistic,decentralized architecture to form a foundation and cradle for a cross-company collaboration platform and a federated data space to tackle the creeping fragmented data landscape.Moreover,to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed reference model,a collaborative predictive diagnostics and maintenance case study is mapped to an edge-enabled IIoT architecture.Experimental results show the potential advantages of using the proposed approach for multi-party applications accelerating sovereign data sharing through Findable,Accessible,Interoperable,and Reusable(FAIR)principles.

Optimization of hydrolysis conditions for the production of protein hydrolysates from fish wastes using response surface methodology

The recycling of waste from food processing is an important industrial procedure for obtaining protein sources with high added value.In this study,trout(Onchorynchus mykiss),anchovy(Engraulis encrasicolus),and whiting(Merlangius merlangus)wastes were hydrolyzed.The hydrolyzation procedure was investigated under the optimum predicted conditions defined by time,temperature,and enzyme ratio(E/S)using alkaline protease(pH 8),Protamex(pH 7),and Flavourzyme(pH 7).The hydrolysis conditions that showed the best degree of hydrolysis(DH%)were optimized using response surface methodology(RSM)with the central composite design(CCD)and Box-Behnken design(BBD)models.The effects of three independent variables,temperature(40-60℃),time(1-8 h),and enzyme concentrations(1-2%),were examined for model optimization.It was determined that the DH%varies between 50.92%and 74.30% according to the type of fish waste and enzyme.The highest degree of hydrolysis was observed from trout waste(74.30%)and the lowest degree from whiting waste(50.92%)with Flavourenzyme.From this study,it has been shown that different degrees of hydrolysis and protein recovery can be obtained,depending on fish species,waste composition,enzyme type,and hydrolysis method.

Relationship between perceived social support and post-traumatic growth in coronavirus disease 2019 patients discharged from the hospital

BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has affected mental health and physical health negatively in some individuals.Examining perceived social support and post-traumatic growth(PTG)in COVID-19 patients could facilitate our understanding of how patients maintain their mental health.AIM To examine the relationship between the level of perceived social support and PTG in COVID-19 patients discharged from the hospital.METHODS This descriptive study was carried out between August and September 2022 with patients who were hospitalized due to COVID-19 in a university hospital in Erzurum and who were discharged at least 3 mo prior to the beginning of the study.The study was completed by 196 patients.Study data were collected faceto-face using a personal information form,multidimensional scale of perceived social support and PTG inventory.RESULTS The total mean score of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support was 63.82±15.72.The PTG inventory total mean score was 47.77±19.85.In addition,a direct significant correlation was found between perceived social support in COVID-19 patients and PTG.CONCLUSION The study results showed that perceived social support variables affected PTG significantly.Therefore,it is recommended for healthcare professionals to implement interventions to promote social support from healthcare professionals and the patient’s family and friends.Considering the negative effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,it is very important and necessary to implement effective public health interventions to promote PTG to reduce mental health problems.

Barriers to big data analytics (BDA) implementation in manufacturing supply chains

Big data analysis(BDA)can increase the capability of supply chain analysis of manufacturing companies.Therefore,many manufacturing companies want to use BDA,but it has been seen that BDA implementation is difficult,especially in developing countries due to the existence of various barriers related to finance,government regulations,etc.This paper aims to investigate the barriers to BDA implementation in Iranian companies.In literature,limited work has been done on identifying barriers to implementing BDA in developing countries.In this regard,34 barriers were identified to BDA adoption in Iran by employing a literature review and feedback received from experts.Then,the most important barriers(14)were analyzed using integrated Interpretive Structural Modeling and MICMAC approach.Results show that two barriers;namely,lack of sufficient knowledge of senior managers and weakness of governance policies,are the most significant.Finally,crucial policy measures and recommendations are proposed to assist managers and government bodies.

The combined role of visual and olfactory cues in foraging by Cataglyphis ants in laboratory mazes

Foragers use several senses to locate food,and many animals rely on vision and smell.It is beneficial not to rely on a single sense,which might fail under certain conditions.We examined the contribution of vision and smell to foraging and maze exploration under laboratory conditions using Cataglyphis desert ants as a model.Foraging intensity,measured as the number of workers entering the maze and arriving at the target as well as target arrival time,were greater when food,blue light,or both were offered or presented in contrast to a control.Workers trained to forage for a combined food and light cue elevated their foraging intensity with experience.However,foraging intensity was not higher when using both cues simultaneously than in either one of the two alone.Following training,we split between the two cues and moved either the food or the blue light to the opposite maze corner.This manipulation impaired foraging success by either leading to fewer workers arriving at the target cell(when the light stayed and the food was moved)or to more workers arriving at the opposite target cell,empty of food(when the food stayed and the light was moved).This result indicates that ant workers use both senses when foraging for food and readily associate light with food.
