Objective: To determine if there is any significant association between stroke and both hypoalbuminema and hypoproteinemia. Patients and Methods: Total serum proteins “T.S.P.” and serum albumin were measured for 65 patients with stroke who were admitted to the medical and neurological wards at Baghdad Teaching Hospital in the Medical City from November 2003 to October 2004. Careful history was obtained and proper clinical examinations were done. Serum albumin, T.S.P., blood sugar, renal function, liver function and general urine examination “G.U.E.” were tested within 48 - 72 hours of the start of patient symptoms. These patients with hepatic and renal dysfunction and those with diabetes mellitus were excluded. The results were compared with the results obtained from control group, which consisted of 40 persons of matched age and sex. By application pf chi square test “X” to see the association of serum albumin with cigarette smoking, age, hypertension and the presence of carotid bruit. Results: The mean serum level of T.S.P. and serum albumin of those with stroke was 6.42 ± 0.322 g/dl, 3.26 ± 0.251 g/dl respectively, which was significantly lower than T.S.P. and serum albumin of the control “mean = 7.8 ± 0.257 g/dl, 4.73 ± 0.206 g/dl respectively” [P X2 = 25.14, P X2 = 15.57, P Conclusion: Hypoalbuminemia and hypoproteinemia are significantly associated with stroke.

Aim of study: This study was carried out to describe characteristics of 22 primary dystonic patients and their response to therapy. Patients and method: Twenty-two patients were entered into the study from Baghdad teaching hospital, Al-Kadhymia teaching hospital in Baghdad, privet nursery home teaching hospital in Baghdad, and Alzehraa teaching hospital in Kut south to Baghdad from January 2005 to January 2008. All cases were primary dystonia, secondary dystonia has been excluded from our study. Neuroimiging and slit Lampe examination have been done for all cases, L-Dopa in dose of 10/mg/kg/day for 2 weeks was giving for all patients. Type of study is a retrospective cohort study. All patients were followed in the outpatient clinics of the hospitals mentioned previously with frequent neurological examinations. Results: Out of 22 patients, 15 (68%) patients were females, 7 (32%) were males. According to descriptive classifications of dystonia by age of onset, fourteen patients (64%) were of early onset and eight (36%) being late onset (26 years and older). Three patients had generalized dystonia, 19 patients had focal dystonia {11 (58%) cases were cervical (TORTICOLIS) type, 5 (26%) blepharospasm type and segmental (LIMBES) dystonia 3 (16%)}. All cases were given L-DOPA in dose 10/mg/kg for 2 weeks, only two cases shown clinical response for the drug inform of absence of abnormal movements and improve quality of life. Conclusion: Dystonia is rare;however, early onset dystonia are more common than late onset. Dystonia are more common in females than in males and focal dystonia is more common than generalized dystonia.

We demonstrated a new type of MAX phase material, chromium titanium aluminum carbide（Cr2TiAlC2） polymer film, to generate a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser（EDFL）. The film thickness was measured to be around 45 μm, which was fabricated using the embedding method with polyvinyl alcohol（PVA） polymer as hoster. The saturable absorber（SA） film demonstrates a dual-wavelength passively Q-switched EDFL which operates at 1 531 nm and 1 560.19 nm, respectively. The Q-switching pulse duration could be varied from 2.46 μs to 770 ns, while the repetition rate varied from 92.76 kHz to 106.6 kHz with an increasing input pumping range from 154 mW to 300 mW. The maximum output power and pulse energy of 15.05 mW and 141.18 nJ were obtained at the maximum input power of 300 mW, respectively.

There is an urgent need to provide a rapid and selective method to analyze food and water samples contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus since it is one of the most potential food and waterborne pathogens. Thus, a portable bio-sensing system and disposable bacterial-sensor chips consisted of anti-S. aureus @MPA/Au NPs-Cu-MOF@SPE were designed, fabricated, and applied for 20-min-based analysis of food and water samples. In this regard, screen-printed electrodes（SPEs） were functionalized with a new synthesized copper-metal organic framework（Cu-MOF） conjugated with gold nanoparticles（Au NPs） to eff ectively promote the chemical immobilization of the bio-receptor（anti-S. aureus antibody） onto the sensor matrix using the mercaptopropionic acid（MPA） as a chemical cross-linker. Subsequently, parameters aff ecting the bacterial-sensing effi-cacy were studied and optimized. Accordingly, high sensitivity was obtained with a wide dynamic linear range from 1 × 10 to 1 × 10～7 colony forming units per milliliter（CFU/m L） with correlation coefficient（ R2） of 0.990, limit of detection and limit of quantification of 0.132 CFU/m L, and 0.440 CFU/m L, respectively. High selectivity was provided since no electrochemical signals were obtained from various non-targeting strains of common pathogens, including the Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Streptococcus mutans, and Enterococcus faecalis. Eventually, the newly developed handheld bacterial-sensing platform was applied for the rapid analysis of S. aureus in food and water samples.

This study focuses on the preparation of nanostructured holmium oxide via the decomposition of holmium acetate precursor utilizing the non-isothermal strategy. Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) was used to follow up the various thermal events involved in the decomposition process. Dehydration completes approximately at 150℃, which is followed by the decomposition of the anhydrous acetate leading to the formation of holmium oxide. Based on the TGA results the acetate precursor was heated non-isothermally at the temperature range of 150 e700℃. The obtained solids were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). It is found that nanocrystalline Ho_2 O_3 starts to form at 500℃ and presents the only phase detected at the 500 e700℃ range. The electrical conductivity of the solids that form at the temperature range of 300 e700℃ was investigated. The obtained values were correlated with the observed structural modifications accompanying the heat treatment. The electrical conductivity of the Ho_2 O_3 samples prepared at 500, 600 and 700℃ reaches the values of 1.92 × 10^(-7), 1.61 × 10^(-7) and 8.33 × 10^(-8) Ω^(-1)cm^(-1) at a measuring temperature of 500℃, respectively. These values are potentially advantageous for high-resistivity devices.

The impact of emergency department length of stay on the outcomes of trauma patients requiring hospitalization: a retrospective observational study

BACKGROUND: We aimed to explore the impact of the emergency department length of stay(EDLOS) on the outcome of trauma ***: A retrospective study was conducted on all trauma patients requiring hospitalization between 2015 and 2019. Patients were categorized into 4 groups based on the EDLOS(24 h). Data were analyzed using Chi-square test(categorical variables), Student’s t-test(continuous variables), correlation coefficient, analysis of variance and multivariate logistic regression analysis for identifying predictors of short EDLOS and hospital ***: The study involved 7,026 patients with a mean age of 32.1±15.6 years. Onefifth of patients had a short EDLOS(24 h were older(P=0.001) and had more comorbidities(P=0.001) and fewer deaths(P=0.001). Multivariate regression analysis showed that the predictors of short EDLOS were female gender, GCS, SI, hemoglobin level, ISS, and blood transfusion. The predictors of mortality were TTA-1(odds ratio [OR]=4.081, 95%CI: 2.364–7.045), head injury(OR=3.920, 95%CI: 2.413–6.368), blood transfusion(OR=2.773, 95%CI: 1.668–4.609), SI(OR=2.132, 95%CI: 1.364–3.332), ISS(OR=1.077, 95%CI: 1.057–1.096), and age(OR=1.040, 95%CI: 1.026–1.054). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with shorter EDLOS had different baseline characteristics and hospital outcomes compared with patients with longer EDLOS. Patients with prolonged EDLOS had better outcomes;however, the burden of prolonged boarding in the ED needs further elaboration.

This work described the preparation of dysprosium oxide, Dy203, nanoparticles using the homogeneous precipitation method. Dy3＋ ions were precipitated using NaOH solution. The obtained product was filtered, dried, and then calcined for 1 h at the temperature range of 300-700 ℃ in static air. The calcination temperature of the Dy-precttrsor was chosen based on its decomposi- tion as indicated by the TGA analysis. The crystalline structure and surface morphology of the calcined solids were studied by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, field emission scanning electron microscopy （FE-SEM）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and X-ray pho- toelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. The obtained results revealed that Dy203 with crystallites size of 11-21 nm was formed at 500 ℃. Such value increased to 25-37 nm for the sample calcined at 700 ℃.

Spot urinary sodium for assessing dietary sodium restriction in cirrhotic ascites

AIM： To evaluate the accuracy of spot urinary Na/K and Na/creatinine （Cr） ratios as an alternative to 24-h urinary sodium in monitoring dietary compliance in patients with liver cirrhosis and ascites treated with diuretics. METHODS： The study was carried on 40 patients with liver cirrhosis and ascites treated with diuretic therapy. Patients were divided into two groups according to 24-h urinary sodium. We measured spot urine Na/K ratio, Na/ Cr ratio and 24-h urinary sodium. Student＇s t test was used to compare the interval variables and x^2 test to compare the nominal variables between the two groups. Receiver operator characteristic curve was used to identify the best cutoff point for Na/K and Na/Cr ratio. RESULTS： The best cutoff point for Na/K ratio was 2.5 （P 〈 0.001） and area under the curve （AUC） was 0.9, and for Na/Cr ratio, the best cutoff point was 35 （P 〈 0.001） and AUC was 0.885. Na/K ratio showed higher sensitivity and accuracy compared to Na/Cr ratio （87.5% and 87% for Na/K ratio; 81% and 85% for Na/Cr ratio, respectively）. CONCLUSION： Spot urine Na/K ratio has adequate accuracy for assessment of dietary sodium restriction compared with 24-h urinary sodium in patients with liver cirrhosis and ascites.
