Assesment of Frequency-Magnitude of Extreme Rainfall Events-Case Study of the MeKong River Delta

Extreme rainfall events are primary natural hazards, which cause a severe threat to people and their properties in populated cities, which are normally located in coastal areas in Vietnam. Analysing these events by using a data series observed over years will support us to draw a picture of how the climate change impact on local environments. The purpose of this report is to understand the characteristics of the extreme rainfall events in MEKONG river delta （south VietNam）. Daily rainfall data in the period of 30 years for a meteorological station in each area were collected from the Vietnam National hydro-meteorological Service. The extreme rainfall events were defined as those exceeding the 95th percentile for each station. The analytical results show that the rainfall values （95th percentile） are 37.4 mm/day at Nam Can station, 27 mm/day at My Thanh station, 22.4 mm/day at hoa Binh station, 23.8 mm/day at Binh Dai station and 22.7 mm/day at Ben Trai station. The highest rainfall data ever recorded are 246.4 mm/day （Nam Can）, 174.5 mm/day （My Thanh）, 179 mm/day （hoa Bin_h）, 187.3 mm/day （Binh Dai） and 136.3 mm/day （Ben Trai） during 1983-2012. The result of the Mann-Kendall tests show that there was a significant creasing of the rainfall at Nam Can, My Thanh station in two periods （1983-2012, 1998-2012） while no clear trend of the rainfall was recoreded at hoa Birth, Binh Dai, Ben Trai station. In order to estimate the return period of the extreme rainfall events, the method General Extreme Value Distribution was used to calculate frequent distribution. The magnitudes of daily maximum rainfall were from 2 to 100 years. The results of return period show that maximum rainfalls are 46.6 mm at Nam Can station （highest） and 31.4 mm at hoa Birth station （lowest） during 50 years. Similarly, maximum rainfalls are expected to be about 55.1 mm at Nam Can station and 37.2 mm at hoa Birth station for 100 years.

Stable operation of highly loaded pure Si-Fe anode under ambient pressure via carboxy silane-directed robust solid electrolyte interphase

Incorporation of higher content Si anode material beyond 5 wt% to Li-ion batteries(LIBs)is challenging,owing to large volume change,swelling,and solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)instability ***,a strategy of diacetoxydimethylsilane(DAMS)additive-directed SEI stabilization is proposed for a stable operation of Si-0.33FeSi_(2)(named as Si-Fe)anode without graphite,which provides siloxane inorganics and organics enrichment that compensate insufficient passivation of fluoroethylene carbonate(FEC)additive and reduce a dependence on *** stable cycling performance of highly loaded(3.5 mA h cm^(-2))pure Si-Fe anode is achieved with 2 wt%DAMS combined with 9 wt%FEC additives under ambient pressure,yielding high capacity 1270 mA h g^(-1)at 0.5 C and significantly improved capacity retention of 81% after 100 cycles,whereas short circuit and rapid capacity fade occur with FEC only ***-directed robust SEI layer dramatically suppresses swelling and particles crossover through separator,and therefore prevents short circuit,demonstrating a possible operation of pure Si or Sidominant anodes in the next-generation high-energy-density and safe LIBs.

A Two-Step Method for the Preparation of highly Conductive Graphene Film and Its Gas-Sensing Property

In this research, a highly conductive graphene film was synthesized through the chemical reduction of graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets followed by thermal treatment at 1100℃ (RGO-1100℃) under h2 ambient. The as-prepared graphene films were characterized by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractions, raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and by electrical conductivity measurements. The results showed that the thermal treatment efficiently removed residual oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the RGO sheets and simultaneously restored the sp2 carbon networks in the graphene sheets. As a result, the electrical conductivity of RGO-1100℃ (~210 S/cm) film was greatly improved compared with that of RGO (~24 S/cm) and graphene oxide (4.2 × 10–4 S/m) films. In addition, the NO2 gas sensing characteristics of the as-prepared RGO films were studied. The results indicated that RGO films were highly responsive to NO2 at temperature of 200℃.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) is a growing problem among Asian *** on the Centers for Disease Control,the age-adjusted prevalence of T2 DM for Asian Americans is 9%,placing them at "moderate risk".however differential patterns of disease burden emerge when examining disaggregated data acrossAsian American ethnic groups; with Filipino,Pacific Islander,Japanese,and South Asian groups consistently described as having the highest prevalence of T2 *** and strengthening prevalence data is vital for on-going prevention *** strongest evidence currently available to guide the prevention of T2 DM in the United States comes from a large multicenter randomized clinical control trial called the Diabetes Prevention Program,which targets individual lifestyle behavior *** has been translated and adopted for some Asian American groups,and shows *** stronger study designs and attention to several key methodological considerations will improve the *** attention has also been directed toward population level downstream prevention *** an infrastructure that includes both individual and population approaches is needed to prevent T2 DM among Asian American populations,and is essential for reducing health disparities.

The type of technology used to strengthen the surface structure of machine parts,typically by carbon-permeation,has made a great contribution to the mechanical engineering industry because of its outstanding advantages in corrosion resistance and enhanced mechanical and physical ***,carbon permeation is considered as an optimal method of heat treatment through the diffusion of carbon atoms into the surface of alloy *** study presented research results on the thermodynamic calculation and simulation of the carbon permeability *** Fick’s law,the paper calculated the distribution of carbon concentration in the alloy steel after it is absorbed from the surface into the internal of the *** the SYSWELD software,an analysis was performed on the carbon permeability process to determine the distribution of carbon concentrations in 20CrMo steel that was then followed by a detailed analysis of the microstructure of the sample post the carburizing *** to the calculation results,the surface carbon content was 0.9%and steadily decreased into the *** 3 hours,the depth of the absorbent layer was measured at 0.5 mm for both the cylindrical and cubic *** analyzing the phase,the distribution of martensite phases such as ferrite/pearlite and residual austenite was also determined after the carburizing process.

Fruit stored in poor conditions undergo biochemical degradations that impact fruit physical qualities, such color and firmness, and reduce beneficial nutritional content including vitamins, flavonoids, phenols, and antioxi-dants. This study investigated the impact of a postharvest treatment of mandarins with edible coatings to prevent biochemical degradations and minimize color changes. The edible coating evaluated in this study is a composite of pregelatinized corn starch (PS), with a cellulose nano fiber (CF) Pickering emulsifier, and is enriched with basil essential oil (EO). The results of varying each parameter were then analyzed by the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method to identify the best-performing edible coating. Using this method, the leading edible coating was identified as PS5EO3 formulized from 5% pregelatinized corn starch, 3% basil essential oil and 0.5% cellulose nanofiber, with a ranking of 0.721 based on quality content, and 0.676 based on percentage change in nutrients after the 12 days of storage at 25 degrees C. Mandarins coated with PS5EO3 significantly suppressed quality losses, and achieving the lowest losses of citric acid (10.45%), while maintaining color stability in terms of color density (14.97%) and percent polymer color (78.14%).

Synthesis, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of a Novel Series of Chalcones, Pyrazolic Chalcones, and Allylic Chalcones

A new series of chalcones (4a-c) and allylicchalcones (11a-b) have been prepared by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation. A novel series of pyrazolicchalcones (5a-c) have been synthesized by the reaction of respective chalcones (4a-c) and hydrazine hydrate. The structures of the compounds were confirmed by spectral data (infrared spectroscopy and 1h nuclear magnetic resonance). All of the compounds (4/5a-c and 11a-b) have been tested for their antimicrobial activities (agar disc-diffusion method) and antioxidant activities (1,1-biphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging method). The test compounds failed to show antibacterial properties (4a-c, 5b, and 11a-b) or exhibited such properties poorly (5a and 5c). None of the test compounds displayed antifungal properties. Of the compounds tested, compounds 5a-c and 11a-b exhibited promising antioxidant activities.

Engineering osteoblastic metastases to delineate the adaptive response of androgen-deprived prostate cancer in the bone metastatic microenvironment
