BACKGROUND Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus resulting from direct damage by hyperglycemia to the nerves and/or ischemia by microvascular injury to the endoneurial vessels which supply the nerves. Median nerve is one of the peripheral nerves commonly affected in diabetic neuropathy. The median nerve size has been studied in non-Nigerian diabetic populations. In attempt to contribute to existing literature, a study in a Nigerian population is *** To evaluate the cross-sectional area(CSA) of the median nerve using B-mode ultrasonography(USS) and the presence of peripheral neuropathy(PN) in a cohort of adult diabetic *** Demographic and anthropometric data of 85 adult diabetes mellitus(DM) and 85 age-and sex-matched apparently healthy control(HC) subjects were taken. A complete physical examination was performed on all study subjects to determine the presence of PN and modified Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument(MNSI) was used to grade its severity. Venous blood was taken from the study subjects for fasting lipid profile(FLP), fasting blood glucose(FBG) and glycated haemoglobin(HbA1 c) while their MN CSA was evaluated at a point 5 cm proximal to(5 cmCATL) and at the carpal tunnel(CATL) by high-resolution Bmode USS. Data was analysed using SPSS version *** The mean MN CSA was significantly thicker in DM subjects compared to the HC at 5 cmCATL(P 0.05). However, the severity of DPN had no additional effect on MN CSA 5 cm proximal to and at the CATL. Crystalline Lens Vitamin C Levels in Cataract Surgical Patients

To determine the amount of Vitamin C in the lenses of Diabetic and Non-Diabetic Patients with Operable Cataract and ascertain association between Vitamin C levels and Blood Glucose, Glycated Haemoglobin and Intraocular pressure. Thirty Diabetic and Thirty Non-Diabetic Patients cataract surgical patients were matched for age and sex and selected for the study. Plasma fasting blood glucose and whole blood glycated Haemoglobin levels were determined by glucose oxidase enzymatic assay and immunodetection methods respectively. Cataractous lens samples obtained during surgery were weighed and homogenized in 10 volumes of phosphate buffer pH 7 and the resulting homogenate centrifuged at 18,000 g for 5 minutes at 4˚C, separated and supernatant stored at -80˚C. Vitamin C assay was carried out using commercial assay kits. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 23. Age range of participants was 55 - 83 years, with a mean of 66.7 ± 1.8 years. Mean Vitamin C levels in the Diabetic and Non-Diabetic groups were 49.5 μg/g ± 6.47 and 57.02 μg/g ± 8.0 respectively. Although the Non-diabetic group had higher levels of Vitamin C, the difference was not significant. Levels of Vitamin C found in both groups are much lower than what has previously been reported in Literature for clear lenses. There was negative association between Vitamin C and Glucose, Glycated Haemoglobin and Intraocular Pressure. Vitamin C supplementation may be useful in prolonging incidence of cataract in both aging and diabetic Nigerian populations. Background/Purpose: Poor glycemic control in Nigeria necessitates assessment and standardization of diabetes care. This study aimed to assess real-world management of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional phase of the seventh wave of International Diabetes Management Practices Study, conducted between 22nd August and 30th September 2016, included adults with T1DM or T2DM during a two-week recruitment period. Results: Of 304 people with T2DM, 187 received oral glucose lowering drugs (OGLDs) only;88 received OGLDs + insulin;27 received insulin only. Metformin + sulfonylureas (128/187;68.45%) and premix only (76/115;66.09%) were the most used OGLD and insulin regimens respectively. Of 77 people with TIDM, all received insulin;six (7.79%) received OGLDs. Insulin initiation was noted around five years after diabetes diagnosis in T2DM (diabetes duration: 8.69 + 7.16 years;duration of insulin treatment: 3.17 ± 4.49 years). Proportion of people achieving glycemic targets (HbA1c Conclusion: Early insulinization and subsidized healthcare can improve long-term diabetes outcomes in Nigeria.

This paper provides the performance analysis of multiuser Vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) system receiver structures for Multiple-input Multiple-Output (MIMO) channel at a base station with assumption of perfect channel estimation and perfect timing delay estimation. In MIMO channels the receivers such as decorrelator, Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) and Multistage Parallel Interference Cancellation (MPIC) receiver outperform the conventional receiver. Withal, since the multiple antenna interference led to a strong impact on the performance degradation of a multistage interference cancellation receiver, the performance of MPIC receiver was highly degraded based on system loading.

Adverse weather has serious implications for flight timeliness, as well as passenger and aircraft safety. This often implies that alternative flight paths have to be used by aircraft to avoid adverse weather. To reduce the impact of such path re-routes, exact techniques such as artificial potential field model and Dijkstra’s algorithms have been proposed. However, such approaches are often unsuitable for real time scenarios involving large number of waypoints and constraints. This has led to the use of metaheuristic techniques that give sub-optimal solutions in good time. In this work, an improved genetic algorithm-based technique has been proposed. The algorithm used an improved mutation operator, reduced passenger inconvenience and considered the schedules of aircraft.

Mild steel plates of thicknesses 0.5 mm,0.6 mm,0.7 mm,0.8 mm,0.9 mm and 1.0 mm were prepared as test *** welding with the developed welding robot and manual electric arc welding machine these test samples were subjected to Tensile Strength and Hardness *** data obtained including hardness,load and extension were analyzed and the data produced from electric arc welding operations,the robot welding operations and un-welded plates(control)were compared with one *** statistical analyses of hardness,load and extension tests for developed welding robot,manual electric arc welding and un-welded(control)mild steel plates of different thicknesses were carried *** results revealed that for hardness,the developed robot welding has the highest mean value of 115.30,standard deviation value of 14.32 and variance value of *** descriptive statistics of the load showed that the developed robot welding samples collectively have the lowest mean value of 2,536.85,standard deviation value of 704.21 and variance value of 495,*** descriptive statistics of the extension in which the developed robot welding samples collectively have the lowest mean value of 1.29,standard deviation value of 0.43 and variance value of 0.18 were also *** result for hardness showed homogeneity of variance among hardness tests of the samples,which implies variation in the hardness test among the tests of the samples since p-value is *** the result for loads shows homogeneity of variance among loads of the samples in which the result reveals that there is no variation in the loads among the tests of the samples since p-value is *** result for extension shows homogeneity of variance among extensions of the samples in which it revealed that there is variation in the extensions among the tests of the samples since p-value is *** analysis of variance(ANOVA)test result revealed that there is a significant difference in the hardness of the samples

The design and developmental steps for an auxiliary machining module utilizing a database framework are discussed in this work to contribute to an improvement in workshop operations. The underlining objective is for the provision of easily accessible and applicable machining operations data to enable and improve job accuracy and conformity to industrial standards. The design of the database for the decision support system is based on a relational frame with Microsoft Access Application package and Microsoft Structured Query Language Server, which serves as the back end of the module. A user interface designed on .Net Framework 3.5 and the windows installer 3.1 running on windows XP operating system serve as the software front end. The developed module is to serve as a decision support system for machine tool operations.

Atmospheric Corrosion Studies of Ductile Iron and Austenitic Stainless Steel in an Extreme Marine Environment

This paper presents the corrosion characteristics and the accompanying changes in the microstructure of unalloyed duc-tile iron (DI) and austenitic stainless steel (ASS) in table salt medium representing an upper limit in an extreme marine environment. The individual corrosion rates of DI and ASS was evaluated for the maximum time period of 1200 hr. Using the immersion test technique, the corrosion rate of DI was evaluated and found to be four-orders of magnitude greater than that of ASS. The corrosion product morphologies of the DI showed that the nodular matrix was gradually covered up as immersion time progressed while the corrosion channels and volume of pits that initially formed in ASS respectively deepened and increased with increased exposure time. This work is important as a reference point for the quantification of the corrosion effectiveness of alloying DI. The microstructures of the corroded samples showed corro-sion initiation and gradual accumulation of corrosion products.
