Malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite is responsible for more than 240 million cases per year and killed 627,000 people in 2020,mostly African *** malaria parasite is transmitted by mosquitos belonging to the genus *** an asymptomatic liver stage,the parasite is released into the bloodstream to invade red blood cells(RBCs)and replicate *** erythrocytic phase is associated with a variety of clinical manifestations,including mild and severe *** malaria(CM)is one of the most severe forms,characterized by the sequestration of parasitized RBCs in the small capillaries of the brain and the local development of cytokine-mediated *** variants in genes encoding proteins involved in red blood cell physiology are protective factors against severe malaria,as clearly demonstrated for the sickle cell variant of hemoglobin(HbS).

In Senegal, basalt aggregates are the aggregates used for the production of asphalt. They are also in some condition in base layer. However, the only licensed and operated basalt quarry in the west-central part of the country is finished and has reached very important depths thus constituting an environmental threat. This is how quartzite present in the east of the country precisely in the department of Bakel would constitute an alternative to basalt. For this purpose, the performance of two bituminous concretes based on quartzite and basalt was compared. One is made from Diack basalt aggregates, considered as the reference aggregate for asphalt in Senegal and the other is based on Bakel quartzite aggregates, they are both class 0/14. The mechanical performance of two bituminous concretes is evaluated using the Marshall method. The results obtained from the marshall tests give compactness values between 94% and 97% representing the limits laid down in the technical specifications, the creep values for quartzite-based asphalt concrete, while respecting the limit values, are higher than those obtained with basalt aggregates. Thus showing that the former is less resistant to deformation than the former. For both bituminous mixtures, the stability values remain above the minimum value of 1000 kgf set by the specifications. The water resistance test carried out on the two bituminous concretes based on basalt aggregate and quartzite aggregate gives values of immersion/compression ratio (R’c/Rc) equal to 0.72 and 0.82 respectively. These values are above the minimum required value (0.70) in the technical specifications in Senegal.

Characterizations of Drinking Water Quality for Populations of Hann Bel-Air (Dakar, Senegal)

Populations of Hann Bel-Air municipality are supplied with drinking water from taps water of “Sénégalaise Des Eaux” (SDE) and Jambar pumps which capturie directly the groundwater. This municipality is characterized by a strong environmental pollution which can affect the quality of drinking water. To determine actual quality of that water, 10 samples were taken and analyzed. Physico-chemical results have shown that tap water is more suitable for domestic consumption than Jambar pump water. The results show that physical parameters such as electrical conductivity (maximum value of 2671 μS/cm) exceed World Health Organization standard. The pH of the water from Jambar pumps is between 6.04 and 6.09, which demonstrates the aggressive character of that water. For tap water, pH values of 7.03 to 7.09 demonstrate their alkalinity. For chemical analyses, bicarbonates and sulphates concentrations respectively meet World Health Organization standards. Tap water meets World Health Organization standard for nitrates. With respect to chloride, the threshold of 250 mg/L is exceeded at all levels, but we note that high chloride concentrations are part of the exemptions granted to SDE. Tap water and water from water table have concentrations of calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium irreproachable. For sodium, EP3, EP4 and P5 samples from the web exceed World Health Organization standard with a peak of 310.27 mg/L. Tap water is more drinkable than groundwater but its quality needs to be improved and especially controlled for the well-being and sustainable health of consumers.

High Urine Retention: Experience in a Series of Patients with Renal Failure Patients

Purpose: High urinary retention (HUR) can negatively impact renal function. Our study aimed to present the epidemiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of HUR in a Senegalese academic hospital. Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 70 patients with HUR associated with renal failure from January 2017 to December 2020. Parameters examined included: age, sex, coexisting conditions affecting renal function, clinical symptoms, diagnostic tests, causes of HUR, urinary diversion, and patient outcomes. Results: The average age was 66, with a majority of male patients (87%). Twenty-three patients had pre-existing medical conditions. Oligo-anuria was the most common reason for detecting HUR (70%). Half of the patients had an ECOG score ≥ 2. The mean creatinine level was 50.7 mg/l. Nineteen patients exhibited hydroelectrolytic disorders. Bacterial colonization was observed in 25 patients. Ultrasound and computed tomography were the most frequently performed imaging tests (100% and 62.8%, respectively). Sixty-seven patients had ureterohydronephrosis (UHN), with bilateral UHN in 88.6% of cases. Pelvic cancers (47.1%) were the primary cause of HUR, primarily bladder cancers (27.1%). Nephrostomy was the most common urinary drainage method (50%), particularly for obstructions due to pelvic cancer (88.6%). The majority of patients (52.8%) regained normal renal function after drainage. Nineteen deaths occurred among elderly patients with compromised general health. Conclusion: Urinary drainage significantly improved renal function for most patients. Pelvic cancer emerged as the leading cause of HUR. Nephrostomy was the predominant drainage method.

Improving the Stability of the Inflatable Soil of Diamniadio by Using Typha Australis in Order to Value It in Partitioning Wall

The construction industry in Senegal is experiencing an upsurge in the development of residential housing units and administrative buildings within the new Diamniadio municipality, an area located just about 35 km from the capital city of Dakar. Laboratory oedometer or expansive-index tests, however, show poor density and compromised shear strength in the soil samples within the area -posing serious construction problems due to significant volume changes (swellings) that occur when subjected to moisture, thus, bringing into question the structural performance integrity of the soil, and the financial implications of substitute soil types used to compensate for its poor tensile strength. By way, the companies collect the soil of this location (Diamniadio) and throw it to make pile or micro-pile (pious) for their structures. This article demonstrates how we can value the soil of Diamniadio and the Typha Australis in residential building with a reasonable cost. Typha Australis is a plant generally luxuriant within the northern and central belts of Senegal but also known for its negative ecological impacts on the agricultural production of rice. The valorisation of the soil of Diamniadio will pass by the ability to increase its stability or to decrease its shrinkage/swelling rate. When we achieve it, the soil associate with Typha Australis will be used for small bricks which can be useful for partition wall and so the soil will not be ever thrown as a non-useful material. Tests results of soil specimens extracted from the site show a shrinkage rate of 29.19% with estimated cracking depths of 3.5 cm. But by adding gradually Typha Australis, the shrinkage rate will pass from 29.19% to 5.13% with the material treats with 10% by mass of Typha Australis. Moreover, the crackings in the cylindrical specimen disappear. That shows the increase of the stability;thus the composition will be used for building bricks. Cure of Varicocele under Local Anesthesia: Impact on Sperm Parameters

Introduction: Varicocele is one of the most frequent causes of infertility. There are several therapeutic modalities, namely surgery (open and laparoscopic) and conventional radiology. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of a varicocele cure under local anaesthesia on spermogram quality. Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2023 in the urology department of the Hôpital Militaire de Ouakam (HMO). The parameters studied were age, reasons for consultation, time to urology consultation, grade of varicocele, Doppler ultrasound and spermogram data before treatment and 3 months after treatment. Treatment consisted of bilateral subinguinal varicocelectomy under local anaesthetic. Data were entered and analysed using Excel software version 2021. Results: We studied 41 patients. The mean age of the patients was 35.3 ± 6.9 years, with extremes of 22 and 50 years. Thirty-eight of our patients (88.37%) were married. The most frequent reason for consultation was primary infertility (72.09%). 28 patients (68.3%) had a bilateral varicocele on ultrasound. Varicocele was associated with bilateral testicular hypotrophy in 13 patients (31.7%) and unilateral left testicular hypotrophy in 11 patients (26.8%). All patients underwent subinguinal varicocelectomy under local anaesthetic. Mean follow-up was 4.5 months. A clear statistically significant improvement was noted in sperm motility and concentration in postoperative spermograms, with normalisation of the spermogram in 15 (36.5%) of patients. Conclusion: The impact of varicocele on sperm parameters has been clearly established. There are various therapeutic methods for curing varicocele, including varicocelectomy under local anaesthetic, which, in addition to its undeniable economic advantages, can significantly improve sperm parameters in patients with varicocele and prevent their deterioration over time.

Introduction: The urethral diverticulum or urethrocele corresponds to a saccular dilation of a portion of the urethral wall. Our objective was to report the clinical aspects, investigations and therapeutic aspects of three cases of congenital urethrocele. Observations: They were three male patients aged 11, 20 and 42 years, two of whom had consulted for terminal dribbling. The diagnosis of urethrocele was made for all patients with retrograde and voiding cystouretrography. Treatment consisted of resection of the urethrocele followed by urethroplasty for both cases. Conclusion: Diagnostic of congenital urethrocele must always be assessed when there is a persistent terminal dribbling, and systematically ask for a retrograde and voiding cystourethrography to confirm it.

Membrane technology is becoming more important for CO,_ separation from natural gas in the new era due to its process simplicity, relative ease of operation and control, compact, and easy to scale up as compared with conventional processes. Conventional processes such as absorption and adsorption for CO2 separation from natural gas are generally more energy demanding and costly for both operation and maintenance. Polymeric membranes are the current commercial membranes used for CO2 separation from natural gas. However, polymeric membranes possess drawbacks such as low permeability and selectivity, plasticization at high temperatures, as well as insufficient thermal and chemical stability. The shortcomings of commercial polymeric membranes have motivated researchers to opt for other alternatives, especially inorganic membranes due to their higher thermal stability, good chemical resistance to solvents, high mechanical strength and long lifetime. Surface modifications can be utilized in inorganic membranes to further enhance the selectivity, permeability or catalytic activities of the membrane. This paper is to provide a comprehensive review on gas separation, comparing membrane technology with other conventional methods of recovering CO2 from natural gas, challenges of current commercial polymeric membranes and inorganic membranes for CO2 removal and membrane surface modification for improved selectivity.

Convective heat transfer coefficients, materializing exchanges between solid wall (here typha) and its environment, influence its behavior under excitation pulse. Temperature of wall and its density of flow vary with these coefficients according to its thickness (in depth). This study therefore focuses on the evaluation of convective heat transfer coefficient on front face and the optimal insulation thickness.
