Selenocysteine (Sec) tRNa. serve a. ca.rier molecules for the biosynthesis of Sec from serine a.d to dona.e Sec to protein in response to specific UGa.codons. In this study, we describe the current sta.us of Sec tRNa. in higher a.ima.s a.d further we exa.nine: (i) the Sec tRNa.popula.ion in Drosophila. (ii) tra.scription of the Sec tRNa.in vivo (in Xenopus oocytes) a.d in vitro (in Xenopus oocyte extra.ts); (iii) the effect of selenium on the Sec tRNa.popula.ion in va.ious ra. tissues following replenishment of extremely selenium deficient ra.s with this element; a.d (iv) the biosynthesis of the modified ba.es on Sec tRNa.in Xenopus oocytes
