Theoretical Assessment of Environmental Factors and Untreated Infectious Individuals in the Transmission Dynamics of Buruli ulcer

Buruli ulcer is the third most common mycobacterial disease worldwide, posing a significant public health burden, especially in impoverished regions of West and Central Africa, such as Benin. The management of Buruli ulcer (BU) in Africa is often hindered by limited resources, delays in treatment, and inadequate medical facilities. Additionally, a portion of the population does not seek hospital care, which facilitates the continued presence of the pathogen in the environment. This paper aims to investigate the role of environmental factors in the transmission of Buruli ulcer. We develop a mathematical model to describe the dynamics of Buruli ulcer transmission, incorporating the presence of the bacterium in the environment. Theoretical results are presented to demonstrate that the model is well-posed. We compute the equilibria, including the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium, and study their stability. To achieve this, we derive a threshold parameter called the basic reproduction number ℛ0, which determines whether the disease will persist in a human population. If ℛ0is less than one, the disease will eventually die out;if ℛ0is greater than one, the disease will persist. Sensitivity analysis is performed to understand the impact of various parameters on the dynamics of Buruli ulcer transmission and to identify the parameters that influence the basic reproduction number ℛ0. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to validate the theoretical results obtained from the mathematical analysis.

Modeling and Control Maximum Power Point Tracking of an Autonomous Photovoltaic System Using Artificial Intelligence

Despite investigative efforts seen in the literature, the maximum power point tracking remains again a crucial problem in photovoltaic system (PV) connected to the power grid. In this paper, a new maximum power point tracking technique which is our contribution to the resolution of this problem is treated. We proposed a hybrid controller of maximum power point tracking based on artificial neural networks. This hybrid controller is composed of two neural networks. The first network has two inputs and two outputs: the inputs are solar irradiation and ambient temperature and the outputs are the reference output voltage and current corresponding at the maximum power point. The second network has two inputs and one output: the inputs use the outputs of the first network and the output will be the periodic cycle which controls the DC/DC converter. The training step of neural networks requires two modes: the offline mode and the online mode. The data necessary for the training are collected from a very large number of real-time measurements of the PV module. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed under different operating conditions using the Matlab/Simulink simulation tool. A comparative study between the proposed method and the perturbation and observation approach was presented.

Natural history of epithelial ovarian cancer and its relation to surgical and medical treatment

Epithelial ovarian cancer(EOC) represents approximately 90% of primary malignant ovarian tumors, the sixth most common cancer in women and the second most common gynecologic cancer. Approximately 80%-85% of all ovarian carcinomas in Western society are serous and up to 95% of patients are in advanced stages(FIGO stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ) at diagnosis. Treatment of ovarian cancer is mainly based on three key approaches: surgical removal of neoplasia; chemotherapy to kill cancer cells; direct chemotherapy on peritoneal surfaces. The application of hyperthermic chemotherapy to the peritoneal cavity(HIPEC) after radical surgery may also be an attractive option. We analyzed the natural history of EOC in the literature and identified various time-points where sensitivity to chemotherapy, freedom from disease and overall survival are different. We propose eight time-points in EOC history with homogeneous oncological fi ndings. The effectiveness of HIPEC in EOC treatment should be evaluated based on these eight time-points and we believe that retrospective and prospective studies of HIPEC should be evaluated according to these time-points.

Patient’s Perception of Autonomy Support and Shared Decision Making in Physical Therapy

Background: Shared Decision Making (SDM) is primarily intended to enhance patient autonomy. To date, the relationship between patients’ perceived levels of involvement and autonomy support has never been investigated in the field of physical therapy. Based on the recently reported extremely low level of observed SDM in physical therapy, similarly poor patient perceptions are expected. Objective: The main objectives of this study were to examine patients’ perceptions of SDM and autonomy support in physical therapy and to explore the relationship between both. Design: Patient survey after real consultations in physical therapy. Methods: Patients completed the Dyadic Observing Patient Involvement (Dyadic OPTION) instrument and the Health Care Climate Questionnaire (HCCQ) to examine patients’ perceived levels of SDM and autonomy support, respectively. Multilevel analyses were applied to determine the relationship between both perceptions. Results: Two hundred and twenty-nine patients, who were recruited by 13 physical therapists, agreed to participate. The median Dyadic OPTION score was 72.9 out of a total possible score of 100. The median HCCQ score was 94.3 out of a total possible score of 100. Patients’ experienced level of SDM (b = 0.14;p < 0.001) and patients’ age (b = 0.12;p = 0.001) contributed to patients’ perceived autonomy support. None of the physical therapist characteristics were related to patients’ perceived autonomy support. Limitations: Only 13 out of 125 therapists who were personally contacted agreed to participate. Conclusion: Using patients’ perceptions, we found that a relationship between SDM and autonomy support existed. In contrast to observational studies, our study also demonstrated that the participating physical therapists individually tailored patient support by adapting their implementation of SDM to each patient.

Population Structure and Sexual Maturity of the Pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus （Osteichthyes, Tetraodontidae） in the Lebanese and Syrian Marine Waters （Eastern Mediterranean）

The pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus is an invasive Lessepsian species of Indo-Pacific origin that has established an increasing population over the past decade in the Levantine basin of the Mediterranean. Besides its toxicity due to the accumulation of tetrodotoxin in its body, it is causing damage to fishing gears and fishermen＇s catches. This study aims to provide data on the population structure and sexual maturity of this species in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean. A total of 214 individuals were collected in the coastal marine waters of Lebanon and Syria, between January 2012 and June 2013 by means of different types of nets and lines, on soft bottoms, at depths ranging from 10 m to 170 m. The TL （total length） of the samples varies between 10.8 cm and 71 cm. The most common size classes, represented by 125 individuals, are the ones between 30 cm and 50 cm TL, with a bulge at 40 cm, represented by 44 individuals. The average TL is 43.99 cm （standard deviation： SD = 17.65） for both males and females. The TW （total weight） of the specimens ranges between 14 g and 4,603 g with an average value of 1,458.52 g （SD = 1,329.49）. The sex ratio （M/F） is 1：1.35 with a total number of 87 males, 118 females and nine unidentified individuals. The weight-length relationship （TW = aTLb） shows a negative allometric growth with b = 2.9481 and R2 = 0.9806. The condition factor （K） is close to one for all samples. The average value of the GSI （gonadosomatic index） shows a substantial increase from winter to spring. The spawning takes place between April and June.

Multicenter application of a nursing workload measurement scale in adult hospitalization units

Objectives:The study aimed to the multicenter application of a nursing workload measurement scale in the internal medicine and surgery adults hospitalization ***:The study design was a multicenter,observational,and descriptive study.A multicenter application of the MIDENF®nursing workload measurement scale was carried out,which consists of 21 items,and covers the four nursing functions(patient care items,teaching,manager,and researcher),in units of hospitalization of adults of internal medicine and surgery of four different *** item contains one or more of the nursing interventions of Nursing Interventions Classification(NIC)and has an assigned time,after comparing the real time it takes to perform each intervention with the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association(NANDA)standardized *** study was carried out during nine months of the year 2020,measuring two days each month in the three work shifts(morning,evening,and night)to all patients admitted on the days of measurement in the indicated ***:The descriptive and inferential analysis of 11,756 completed scales,5,695 in general surgery and 6,061 in internal medicine,showed a greater care load for the two units during the morning shift(227,034 min in general surgery,261,835 min in internal medicine),especially in the items of“self-care”,“medication”,“common invasive procedures”,“fluid therapy”,and“patient and family support”,while the managerial function was similar during the three work shifts in the two units studied,getting values between 57,348 and 62,*** the analysis by shift and unit,statistical significance was obtained both for the total workload and the four nursing functions(P<0.001).Conclusions:It is shown that the use of validated scales with the standardized language of nursing functions,adapted to the units,provides objective information to adjust the nursing staff to the real situation of care in any hospital and unit where it is applied,improving quality

Determination of Crystallization Kinetics and Size Distribution Parameters of Agglomerated Calcium Carbonate Nanoparticles during the Carbonation of a Suspension of Lime

The reaction studied in this work is the synthesis of nanometric size calcium carbonate by carbonation of a suspension of lime, which represents the most common industrial route. The carbonation was proceeded in a pilot batch reactor. This article presents a method for the determination of nucleation and crystal growth rates of calcium carbonate by following two macroscopic parameters: the mass production rate by precipitation and the specific surface area. The results give a constant nucleation rate around 4 × 1015m-3 ·s-1 and a decreasing crystal growth rate between 0.2 and 2 × 10-10 m·s-1. It also provides the main characteristics of the monoparticle size distributions (i.e. the mean particle sizes and in situ coefficient of variation) in the agglomerates, which cannot be obtained by other known methods. For the carbonation carried out in this work, the mean mass particle size at the end of the reaction is about 300 nm and the coefficient of variation of 0.28 indicates a narrow particle size distribution of the monoparticles.

Anticardiolipin antibodies do not mediate macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes

The relationship of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA), markers of the antiphospholipid syndrome, with vascular complications of diabetes mellitus is polemic. This cross-sectional study assessed the frequency of IgG, IgM, and IgA ACA in type 2 diabetics with and without history of vascular events for the last 5 years, and in healthy controls. ACA were detected by enzyme immunoassay. A total of 73 type 2 diabetics (33 with history of vascular events) and 54 healthy controls were tested. Most diabetics were female (p = 0.003), and older than controls (p 0.09). ACA positivity rates were also similar when diabetics with and without history of vasculopathy were compared (p > 0.47). After adjusting for gender, age, hypertension, and smoking status, a weak but statistically insignificant association between IgM ACA and diabetics with vasculopathy was found (adjusted OR 2.7;95% CI 0.2 - 34.2;p = 0.441). Overall, levels of IgG (r = 0.25;p = 0.005) and IgM (r = 0.23;p = 0.010) ACA were associated with increasing age. In short, the frequency of a positive ACA test in type 2 diabetics (with or without previous macrovasculopathy) was not significant as compared to healthy controls. There was no association of ACA with vascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Individual Leaf Area of Early Flowering Arabidopsis Genotypes Is More Affected by Drought than Late Flowering Ones: A Multi-Scale Analysis in 35 Genetically Modified Lines

Plants acclimate to drought optimizing the trade-off between biomass production and water loss while ensuring their survival and reproduction. Plants also modify their growth or phenology as complementary strategies in response to stress. Despite evidence of an interaction between flowering time and plant growth response to environmental stresses, this interaction in response to drought is under debate. To contribute to the analysis of this interaction, leaf growth of 35 genetically modified lines of Arabidopsis thaliana and their common wild-type, Col-0 was analyzed by a quantitative multi-scale phenotyping approach from cellular to whole plant scale both in well-watered and soil moderate water deficit conditions. These genotypes were selected for the various physiological functions potentially altered by their genetic modification and that could interact with plant growth and/or their drought responses. In all genotypes, leaf expansion decreased in response to drought both at the whole rosette and the individual leaf levels. Additionally, epidermal cell area and/or epidermal cell number decreased in response to the drought treatment. In contrast, the number of rosette leaves was reduced in only half of the genotypes and leaf growth duration was only modified in 4 of them. Despite long photoperiod conditions, the duration of the vegetative phase, i.e. the time elapsed between germination and flowering stage, varied from 12 to 27 days among genotypes under well watered conditions. Our analyses revealed that the differences of flowering time observed in well-watered condition impacted the leaf area response to drought. Early-flowering genotypes slightly decreased their final leaf number, but strongly reduced their individual leaf area compared with the late-flowering ones. This result underlines the difficulty to analyze plant response to environmental stresses when genotypes with different flowering dates are compared.
