Fitting quadrics with a Bayesian prior

Quadrics are a compact mathematical formulation for a range of primitive surfaces. A problem arises when there are not enough data points to compute the model but knowledge of the shape is available. This paper presents a method for fitting a quadric with a Bayesian prior. We use a matrix normal prior in order to favour ellipsoids when fitting to ambiguous data. The results show the algorithm copes well when there are few points in the point cloud,competing with contemporary techniques in the area.

Case Report on Feline Polycythemia Vera

Polycythemia vera has been reported as a known condition in cats as early as 1966. This condition manifests as an increased mass in red blood cells and elevated hematocrit and is defined as an idiopathic chronic myeloproliferative disorder. The patient described in this paper presented with hyperemic gums and pinna and an acute onset of progressive ataxia and lethargy. Several possible underlying primary conditions such as cardiac disease and renal malignancy were excluded by running basic blood work and radiographic imaging. Initial blood work revealed a significantly elevated packed cell volume (88%). After diagnosis, treatment with phlebotomy and chemotherapy lead to a reduction in hematocrit and elimination of neurologic signs. This case study represents the diagnosis and successful management of this disease in a private practice setting. Polycythemia vera is relatively uncommon in dogs and cats, but should still be considered in cases of neurologic disorders, especially with the presence of bright red ears, paws, or gums.

Five Year Survival Outcomes of Prospectively Recorded Cohort Data for Older Adults versus Younger Adults with Resected Primary Rectal Cancer

Background: Rectal cancer predominantly occurs in older adults. We aimed to compare the long-term outcomes of older adults (≥70 years) versus younger adults (Methods: Consecutive patients who had resection of a primary rectal cancer between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2010 were identified from a prospective database at the Concord Repatriation General Hospital and stratified into two age groups: ences in patients, cancer, and treatment characteristics were determined by Chi-square tests. 5-year Overall Survival (OS) and Cancer-Specific Survival (CSS) were determined by the Kaplan-Meier method and by multivariable Cox regression analysis. We present Parameter Quantification Network(PQ-Net),a regression deep convolutional neural network providing quantitative analysis of powder X-ray diffraction patterns from multi-phase *** network is tested against simulated and experimental datasets of increasing complexity with the last one being an X-ray diffraction computed tomography dataset of a multi-phase Ni-Pd/CeO_(2)-ZrO_(2)/Al_(2)O_(3) catalytic material system consisting of ca.20,000 diffraction *** is shown that the network predicts accurate scale factor,lattice parameter and crystallite size maps for all phases,which are comparable to those obtained through full profile analysis using the Rietveld method,also providing a reliable uncertainty measure on the *** main advantage of PQNet is its ability to yield these results orders of magnitude faster showing its potential as a tool for real-time diffraction data analysis during in situ/operando experiments.
