A simple method for the fabric.tion of ultrathin films c.ntaining low molec.lar weight dye material is introduc.d(post-adsorption tec.nique). The c.romophore used is 4-nitro-4'-dec.loxy azobenzene quaternary ammonium salt (azo-10Q).In c.assic.l layer-by-layer (LBL) proc.dures, where the substrate is dipped alternately into the c.romophore solution and thec.mplementary polyelec.rolyte, the c.romophore tends to desorb from the film during subsequent immersion in thepolyanion solution, and there is little or no indic.tion of multilayer growth. The extent of desorption depends somewhat onthe selec.ion of polyelec.rolyte, the ionic.strength and the pH of solution. An alternative approac. is to first preparec.nventional LBL films from a pair of oppositely c.arged polyelec.rolytes, and then to soak this film into the c.romophoresolution, where adsorption by penetration into the LBL film may take plac.. In preliminary results, a linear dependenc. ofUV absorbanc. on layer number of LBL film thus prepared was found, demonstrating the apparent effec.iveness of the post-adsorption tec.nique for the preparation of azo-10Q-c.ntaining ultrathin films.

Objec.ive: Equine-assisted ac.ivities and therapies(EAATs) have been a growing adjunc.ive integrative health modality, as they allow partic.pants to prac.ic. mindfulness, emotional regulation, and self-mastery or self-esteem building skills. Preliminary evidenc. suggests that these programs may be helpful in reduc.ng posttraumatic.stress disorder(PTSD), anxiety, and depressive symptoms. The c.rrent study examines the ac.eptability of integrating an EAAT program as part of a two-week, intensive c.inic.l program for veterans with PTSD and/or traumatic.brain injury(TBI).Methods: A family member or support person c.uld ac.ompany veterans and partic.pate in the *** hundred and six partic.pants(veteran n = 62, family n = 44) left the urban environment in an intensive outpatient program(IOP) to attend a two-day, weekend EAAT in rural New Hampshire. Satisfac.ion surveys were c.nduc.ed on the last day of the program and examined using thematic.***: The following themes were reported in the surveys: ability of horses to c.talyze emotional rehabilitation, effec.iveness of immersion in equine-assisted ac.ivities, program’s ability to foster interpersonal relationships and nec.ssity of educ.tion about PTSD for staff. Partic.pants also reported enjoying the program as highlighted by qualitative feedbac., a mean sc.re of 9.76(standard deviation[SD] = 0.61) as reported by veterans and a mean sc.re of 9.91(SD = 0.29) as reported by family members on a 10-point visual analog sc.le with higher sc.res indic.ting a greater overall ***: These data offer preliminary evidenc. that an adjunc. EAAT program is ac.eptable for veterans with PTSD and/or TBI partic.pating in an IOP.

Human Afric.n trypanosomiasis (HAT) c.mmonly known as sleeping sic.ness oc.urs in about 36 c.untries in sub-Saharan Afric. and results in a large number of deaths and c.nsiderable illness. The drugs used in the treatment of HAT are very toxic.and therefore might not be safe in pregnanc.. Few published data exist on the treatment of HAT in pregnanc.. We desc.ibe a c.se of T. bruc.i gambiense infec.ion oc.urring in a pregnant woman that was suc.essfully treated with Melarsoprol with no toxic.effec. to mother and the baby after 2 years of follow-up.

The proc.ss of elec.rospinning is c.nsidered one of the most promising methods for the fabric.tion of poly- mer nanofibers. This essentially c.nsists of applying a high elec.ric.field, whic. c.uses stretc.ing of the polymer whic. exits through a c.pillary. Among the numerous applic.tions of this proc.ss, elec.rospinning allows the fabric.tion of semic.nduc.or and c.nduc.ive nanofibers from mixtures or solutions, whic. have great potential for applic.tions in sensors and the fabric.tion of sc.ffolds for c.ll growth. The aim of this work was to analyze the properties of the blend, produc.s by the elec.rospinning of the Pc. and PLLA solu- tion, with the foc.s to generate a promissory sc.ffold. Pc. is a semi-c.ystalline aliphatic.polymer that has a slower degradation rate 12 - 24 months. It has a low glass transition temperature at –60?c. a melting tem-perature at about 60?c. and a high thermal stability. Properties of PLA depend on the c.mponent isomers, proc.ssing temperature, annealing time and molec.lar weight. Thus were used Pc., from Aldric., with Mw of 80,000 g/mol, and PLLA, sintered in laboratory, with Mw of 240,000 g/mol, were dissolved in c.loroform (c.c.3, Merc.) and ac.tone (Synth) by stirring for 6 hours. The solution was elec.rospinning for 1 hour us- ing the equipment made in the laboratory, the voltage used was 13 kv, the rate of 0.5 ml/h and an approxi- mate distanc. from the tip of the needle to the c.llec.or of 12 c.. The morphology of the samples was ob- served by images made with sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py (SEM) and also was analyzed by FT-IR and DSc.

c.olic.ac.d (or 3a,7a,12a-trihydoxyl-5a-c.olan-24-oic.ac.d) and lithoc.olic.ac.d (or 3a-hydroxyl-5a-c.olanic.24-oic.ac.d) are c.mmonly oc.urring bile ac.ds synthesized from c.olesterol in the liver in mammals. They all possess a steroid skeleton c.ntaining four rings, three with six c.rbons and one with five c.rbons. The transformation of c.olesterol to c.olic.ac.d results in two major struc.ural c.anges that affec. the steroid skeleton. The first is the hydrogenation of the double bond between c. and c. and the sec.nd is a c.nformational flip of ring A from the 5a-position to the 5a-position. In addition, one or more hydroxyl groups are added to the steroid skeleton. Outside of the ring system, c.4 is c.nverted from a saturated alkyl to a c.rboxylic.ac.d *** c.ain polymers based on c.olesterol moiety have been made as reported in the *** bile ac.ds and c.olesterol are all in the family of steroid molec.les, it is of interest to investigate whether bile ac.ds may also ac. as mesogenic.***, flexible spac.r groups with 10 c.rbons are introduc.d between bile ac.d skeleton and the poymerizable double bonds. The monomers and polymers are c.mpared with c.olesterol and dihydroc.olesterol monomers and polymers with the same spac.rs. Dihydroc.olesterol is c.osen to investigate the influenc. of the double bond in the formation of Lc. given that both c.olesterol and dihydroc.olesterol have a planar struc.ure but there is no double bond in the latter. These monomers and their c.rresponding polymers were c.arac.erized for their liquid c.ystalline (Lc. properties by differential sc.nning c.lorimetry (DSc., polarizing optic.l mic.osc.py (POM) and X-ray *** was found that only the c.mpounds bearing the planar c.olesterol moieties possess Lc.phases. It is c.nc.uded that the 5a-c.nfiguration between the first and sec.nd c.c.es on the steroid skeleton of bile ac.ds does not favor proper alignment of the rigid part of the bile ac.d moieties.

The feasibility of nutrient uptake by c.lorella vulgaris using a c.eap c.rbon sourc. suc. as plantain peel extrac. was studied and its biomass utilized for bioethanol produc.ion. Unripe plantain peels were obtained, proc.ssed, infused for 48 hrs, extrac.ed and c.ltivated with the c.lorella spec.es for a period of fourteen days. The mic.oalgal c.rbohydrate c.ntent was hydrolyzed with ac.d and enzyme while the hydrolysate fermented with 10% c.nc.ntration of Sac.haromyc.s sp. and Aspergillus sp. at 30°c.and pH 4.5 using Separate Hydrolysis and Fermentation (SHF) and Separate Hydrolysis and c.-c.lture Fermentation (SHc.) methods. Results show that maximum c.ll growth of 1.56 (OD) and biomass c.nc.ntration of 19 g/l were obtained with 48 hrs infusion. The result indic.ted that c. vulgaris utilized PPE medium as a sole c.rbon substrate and stimulated the sec.etion of biomass. The highest reduc.ng sugar of 0.63 mg/ml was obtained after hydrolysis of the biomass, while the ethanol produc.ion yield of 0.33 g/l was obtained after fermentation. The ethanol produc.ion yield inc.eased with the inc.ease in fermentation time, while the reduc.ng sugar was reduc.d after five days of fermentation. The highest ethanol perc.ntage of 10.82% v/v was obtained from the distillate. This study showed that plantain peel c.n be utilized by c. vulgaris whic. provides a feasible route of reduc.ng produc.ion c.st of bioethanol from a c.eap c.rbon substrate for biomass and bioenergy produc.ion.

Two types of multipurpose essential oil blends, blend11 c.ntaining eleven different essential oils and blend12 c.ntaining twelve, were tested against bac.erial strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATc. 9027, Serratia marc.sc.ns ATc. 13880 and Staphyloc.c.us aureus ATc. 6538 and against the fungi, c.ndida albic.ns ATc. 10231, Aspergillus fumigatus ATc. 10894 and Fusarium solani ATc. 36031 to determine the spec.rum of in vitro antimic.obial ac.ivity using aromatograms (paper disc.diffusion assays). Mic.obial growth was dec.eased by multipurpose blend11 and blend12 in a similar manner. The saline c.ntrol disc.did not inhibit antimic.obial growth while the two blends exhibited signific.nt zones of inhibition for all 3 bac.eria and for the 3 fungi. The greatest antibac.erial ac.ivity of blend11 and blend12 was exhibited with P. aeruginosa and S. marc.sc.ns followed by S. aureus. A high level of ac.ivity was assoc.ated with c. albic.ns and a lower level with F. solani followed by A. fumigatus. It is c.early evident from previous published studies that no single essential oil will effec.ively inhibit the growth of all of the organisms in our study. However, our results demonstrate that blend11 and blend12 have a broad range of inhibitory ac.ivity affec.ing all of the mic.oorganisms tested.

AIM: To identify patients with or without liver steatosis and its severity in treatment-na?ve patients affec.ed by hepatitis c.virus(Hc.) ***: We inc.uded 56 Hc. infec.ed patients, and assessed the amount of liver fat by histomorphometry, and its relationships with fat and lean mass at different parts of the body(by densitometry), hormones [insulin, homeostatic.model assessment(HOMA)], adipokines(resistin, adiponec.in, leptin), and c.tokines(tumor nec.osis fac.or α, interleukin-6).RESULTS: Although the intensity of liver steatosis is related to trunk fat mass and HOMA, 33% of patients showed no liver steatosis, and this finding was not related to body mass index or genotype. Besides trunkfat mass, no other fac.or was related to the presenc. or not of liver steatosis, or to the intensity of it, by multivariate analysis. Lean mass was not related to liver steatosis. Adiponec.in levels were lower among patients. No differenc.s were observed in leptin and ***: Steatosis in Hc. infec.ion is c.mmon(67.2%), and c.osely related to trunk fat, and insulin resistanc., but not with leg fat mass or adipokines.
