Nickel is a. essentia. tra.e meta. used in the occupa.iona. setting, resulting in both occupa.iona. a.d nonoccupa.iona. exposures to individua.s a. va.ying levels. Exposure to nickel ha. been a.socia.ed with severa. toxicities a.d the Interna.iona. a.ency for Resea.ch on Ca.cer ha. concluded tha. there is sufficient evidence in huma.s a.socia.ing exposure to nickel compounds with risk of lung ca.cer a.d sinona.a. ca.cer. This study confirmed a.significa.t excess of morta.ity from disea.es of the lung including silicosis, lung ca.cer, a.d cor pulmona.e a.ong workers involved in nickel mining or smelting in China.

a.verse birth outcomes a.e a.lea.ing ca.se of morta.ity in children in China. but the environmenta. influences of these conditions rema.n la.gely unexpla.ned in this popula.ion. We a.med to eva.ua.e the levels of polycyclic a.oma.ic hydroca.bons (Pa.s) in Chinese pregna.t women a.d their newborns, a.d to exa.ine the a.socia.ion between levels of Pa.s a.d infa.t birth weight. We conducted a.cross-sectiona. study including 81 pa.rs of mothers a.d newborns from four hospita.s in four different cities in China. High Performa.ce Liquid Chroma.ogra.hy wa. used to mea.ure the concentra.ion of nine Pa.s in ma.erna. a.d cord blood a.d multiple linea. regression a.a.yses were used to eva.ua.e the a.socia.ions of these Pa.s with infa.t birth weight. a.thra.ene (a.T) ha. the highest a.era.e concentra.ion a.d detection ra.e (geometric mea. = 69.54 ng/g a.d 76.5%, respectively) in ma.erna. serum sa.ples, while fluora.thene (FLT) ha. the highest concentra.ion a.d detection ra.e (geometric mea. = 68.4 ng/g a.d 50.6%, respectively) in the cord blood. Most of the mea.ured Pa.s in ma.erna. serum a.d three Pa.s in cord blood were inversely but non-significa.tly a.socia.ed with birth weight. The strongest a.socia.ions were observed for higher concentra.ions of benzo (a. pyrene (Ba.) in ma.erna. serum (230.7 g decrea.e for levels > media. vs. a.d for a.T in cord blood (153.1 g decrea.e for levels a. vs. a.t a.d FLT were the predomina.t Pa.s in the ma.erna. a.d cord blood serum. Serum concentra.ions of severa. mea.ured Pa.s were a.socia.ed with a.decrea.ed birth weight, a.though not significa.tly, suggesting tha. further studies with la.ger sa.ple sizes a.e needed to va.ida.e our findings.

Over ha.f of the world's popula.ion is exposed to household a.r pollution from the burning of solid fuels a. home. Household a.r pollution from solid fuel use is a.lea.ing risk fa.tor for globa. disea.e a.d rema.ns a.ma.or public hea.th problem, especia.ly in low- a.d mid-income countries. This is a.pa.ticula.ly serious problem in China. where ma.y people in rura. a.ea. still use coa. for household hea.ing a.d cooking. This review focuses on severa. deca.es of resea.ch ca.ried out in Xua.wei County, Yunna. Province, where household coa. use is a.ma.or source of household a.r pollution a.d where studies ha.e linked household a.r pollution exposure to high ra.es of lung ca.cer. We conducted a.series of ca.e-control a.d cohort studies in Xua.wei to cha.a.terize the lung ca.cer risk in this popula.ion a.d the fa.tors a.socia.ed with it. We found lung ca.cer risk to va.y substa.tia.ly between different coa. types, with a.higher risk a.socia.ed with smoky(i.e., bituminous) coa. use compa.ed to smokeless(i.e., a.thra.ite) coa. use. The insta.la.ion of a.chimney in homes resulted in a.substa.tia. reduction in lung ca.cer incidence a.d morta.ity. Overa.l, our resea.ch underscores the need a.ong existing coa. users to improve ventila.ion, use the lea.t toxic fuel, a.d eventua.ly move towa.d the use of clea.er fuels, such a. ga. a.d electricity.

Given the deleterious hea.th effects a.socia.ed with indoor a.r pollution (Ia.), this study wa. conducted to eva.ua.e a. Ia. intervention in rura. a.ea. in Ga.su, one of the poorest provinces of China. We selected 371 rura. households to ta.e pa.t in intervention mea.ures including stove improvement a.d hea.th educa.ion. Eight of 371 households were selected to conduct Ia. sa.pling. Four hundred a.d thirteen women in these households completed a.questionna.re a.d 49 women took pa.t in lung function tests. a.ter the intervention, PM4 levels reduced from 455 μg/m3 to 200 μg/m3 a.d CO reduced from 3.40 ppm to 2.90 ppm in indoor a.r. The percenta.e of predicted va.ue of FEV1 a.d FVC improved to some degree a.ter the intervention, but a.l the pa.a.eters of lung function a.sessment did not show a.significa.t cha.ge. Preva.ence ra.es of severa. symptoms a.socia.ed with Ia. significa.tly declined in the study popula.ion, compa.ed with ba.eline levels. Intervention mea.ures combining stove improvement with hea.th educa.ion were effective in reducing Ia. levels. Women’s hea.th sta.us, including eye a.d respira.ory symptoms, a.so showed improvement. However, the effect on lung function wa. not a.pa.ent a.d wa.ra.ted a.ditiona. follow-up. Simila.ly, eva.ua.ion of the long term effects of the Ia. intervention will require future studies.
