Cu^+-incorporated TiO_2 overlayer on Cu_2O nanowire photocathodes for enhanced photoelectrochemical conversion of CO_2 to methanol

In this paper, we report photoelectrochemical（PEC） conversion of carbon dioxide（CO_2） using photocathodes based on Cu_2O nanowires（NWs） overcoated with Cu~＋-incorporated crystalline TiO_2（TiO_2–Cu~＋）shell. Cu_2O NW photocathodes show remanent photocurrent of 5.3% after 30 min of PEC reduction of CO_*** coating Cu_2O with TiO_2–Cu~＋ overlayer, the remanent photocurrent is 27.6%, which is an increase by5.2 fold. The charge transfer resistance of Cu_2O/TiO_2–Cu~＋ is 0.423 k/cm2, whereas Cu_2O photocathode shows resistivity of 0.781 k/cm2 under irradiation. Mott–Schottky analysis reveals that Cu~＋ species embedded in TiO_2 layer is responsible for enhanced adsorption of CO_2 on TiO_2 surface, as evidenced by the decrease of capacitance in the Helmholtz layer. On account of these electrochemical and electronic effects by the Cu~＋ species, the Faradaic efficiency（FE） of photocathodes reaches as high as 56.5% when TiO_2–Cu~＋ is added to Cu_2O, showing drastic increase from 23.6% by bare Cu_2O photocathodes.

＜正＞A boundary integral method is applied in finding optimum shape of endosseous implant in dentistry, where the stress value is of great importance for successful osseointegration at the implant-bone interface. Objective is to design the implant so as to avoid bone resorpiion, which leads to serious failure. A von Mises stress functional at the zonal interface is considered to this end. Sensitivities in terms of the interface shape of the implant body are computed based on the formula by the boundary integral method. The problem is assumed axisymmetric having 3 zones of implant, cortical and cancellous bone. New optimum designs are obtained using sequential linear programming method for several cases such as different fixed conditions, different objectives and different design variables. As a result, the optimum shape is found heavily dependent on the surrounding conditions, which means more precise modeling should be provided for more reliable implant solution. Interestingly the optimum shapes look similar to those of tooth root which is the natural optimum. The method can be a useful tool for the practical implant design as long as its own features such as threaded shape are accounted for.

With the changes in trends of disease pattern from infectious to chronic degenerative disease, cardiovascular disease has been considered as the major cause of death in *** studies have been done on the antioxidant effects of some vitamins in the prevention of chronic illness, but not many in relation to the cardiovascular ***, the relation between antioxidant vitamins, mainly α-tocopherol (α-T) and b-carotene (b-C), and coronary artery disease (CAD) such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction has been investigated in this *** blood samples were obtained from the CAD patients who were angiographically diagnosed within a month (100 case group). Patients who had an experience of PTCA or CAbG were excluded from the study. Control subjects were healthy adults who had normal EKG values, no chest pain and no past history of cardiac disease (100 control group). All subjects were free of serum lipid lowering drugs. Serum α-T and b-C were analysed using HPLC. In addition to antioxidant vitamins, serum lipids (total cholesterol, HDL, TG) were also measured. Each case and control was matched in terms of age and sex. And all the CAD risk factors such as blood pressure, smoking, alcohol, serum lipid profile and bMI were adjusted to determine pure effect(s) of α-T and b-C on the *** concentrations of both α-T and b-C were significantly lower in the CAD group than those in control group (Pb-C were 11.9±7.2 (μg/ml), 35.8±3.1 (μg/dl) respectively. As for the levels of b-C, it shows inverse relation with age, but not for the α-T Ievels. Serum levels of both vitamins did not show any significant differences in terms of sex, but men have a tendency o higher levels of b-C,but lower levels of α-T

We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast mode-locker based on a CoSb_3 skutterudite topological insulator for femtosecond mode-locking of a fiber laser. The mode-locker was implemented on a side-polished fiber platform by depositing a CoSb_3∕PVA composite. The measured modulation depth and saturation power for the transverse-electric mode input were ～5% and ～8.7 W, respectively, and ～2.8% and ～10.6 W for the transverse-magnetic mode input. by incorporating this mode-locker into an erbium-doped fiber-based ring cavity, we were able to readily generate mode-locked, soliton pulses having a pulse width of ～833 fs at 1557.9 nm. The 3-db bandwidth of the output pulses and time-bandwidth product were ～3.44 and 0.353 nm, respectively. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the use of a skutterudite-based saturable absorber for femtosecond mode-locked pulse generation.

Product data management (PDM) has been accepted as an important tool for the manufacturing industries. In recent years, more and mor e researches have been conducted in the development of PDM. Their research area s include system design, integration of object-oriented technology, data distri bution, collaborative and distributed manufacturing working environment, secur ity, and web-based integration. However, there are limitations on their rese arches. In particular, they cannot cater for PDM in distributed manufacturing e nvironment. This is especially true in South China, where many Hong Kong (HK) ma nufacturers have moved their production plants to different locations in Pearl R iver Delta for cost reduction. However, they retain their main offices in HK. Development of PDM system is inherently complex. Product related data cover prod uct name, product part number (product identification), drawings, material speci fications, dimension requirement, quality specification, test result, log size, production schedules, product data version and date of release, special tooling (e.g. jig and fixture), mould design, project engineering in charge, cost spread sheets, while process data includes engineering release, engineering change info rmation management, and other workflow related to the process information. Accor ding to Cornelissen et al., the contemporary PDM system should contains manageme nt functions in structure, retrieval, release, change, and workflow. In system design, development and implementation, a formal specification is nece ssary. However, there is no formal representation model for PDM system. Theref ore a graphical representation model is constructed to express the various scena rios of interactions between users and the PDM system. This paper reports the effects of variations in the fuel composition of H_2/CO/CH_4 syngas on the characteristics of NO_x and CO emissions in a partially-premixed gas turbine combustor. Combustion tests were conducted on a full range of fuel compositions by varying each component gas from 0% to 100% at heat inputs of 40 and 50 k Wth. Flame temperature, combustor liner temperature, ignition delay time, and flame structure were investigated computationally and experimentally to judge whether they are significant indicators of NO_x and CO formation. The characteristics of and reasons for NO_x and CO emissions were investigated by analyzing the emission mechanisms and relationships among fuel property, equivalence ratio, flame temperature, liner temperature, flame shape. The flame structures were investigated using the following flame visualization methods:(1) time-averaged OH* chemiluminescence and its Abel-deconvolution;(2) direct photography; and(3) instantaneous OH-PLIF. The flame structures were greatly changed by the fuel composition and heat input, and they were subjected to key affecting parameters of the temperatures of the flames and the liners. NO_x and CO emissions also largely varied according to fuel composition and heat input, showing neither linearly nor exponentially clear proportional trends toward the syngas compositions because of the singular conditions. For example, only the 100% CO flame at low load emitted lots of CO, whereas complete combustion was observed in other cases. However, the qualitative observations showed that the root causes of NO_x emission behaviors were flame temperature and flame structure, which were directly related to the residence time in the flame. Various sets of practical test results were obtained, and these results could contribute to the optimal selection of the fuel-feeding condition when fuel is changed from natural gas to syngas in order to minimize NO_x and CO emissions with stable combustion.
