Objective\ To validate the use of Allium sativum as a reliable test model for genotoxicity, isoproturon, a substituted phenylalkylurea herbicide, was evaluated on the root meristem cells by this plant system. Method\ Test concentrations were selected by determining EC50 and root tips were exposed to various concentrations for 6 or 24 hr. EC50 concentration was calculated to be 70.8 ppm for the root growth. In addition to root growth retardation exposure to isoproturon induced morpholoogical changes like discolouration and stiffness of roots. results\ Exposure to various experimental concentrations of isoproturon (35-280 ppm), including EC50, significantly and dose-dependently inhibited the mitotic index and induced chromosome breaks/mitotic aberrations at 6 or 24 hr. Conclusion\ The frequency of aberrations was found to be decreased in a dose dependant manner at 24 or 48 hr post exposure, however in comparison of control cells the frequency of aberrations was considerably high which indicates genotoxicity potentials of isoproturon. Further, present study also suggests that Allium sativum is a sensitive, efficient, and reliable test system for measuring the genotoxicity potential of environmental chemicals.

Coutsourides (1980) derives an ad hoc nuisance parameter removal test for testing the equality of two multiple correlation coefficients of two independent p variate normal populations, under the assumption that a sample of size n is available from each population. He also extends his ad hoc nuisance parameter removal test to the testing of the equality of two multiple correlation matrices. This paper presents likelihood ratio tests for testing the equality of k multiple correlation coefficients, and also k partial correlation coefficients.

Guar gum is dispersible in cold or hot water to produce a colloidal dispersion of exceptionally high viscosity these properties make guar gum a highly valued gum in the food textile, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, drilling and oil recovery industry, Guar gum is a natural polysaccharide which is capable of forming film by using the solution casting techniques. A series of blend films made of Guar Gum and PVA (GG-PVA), is to be prepared by solution casting. The effect of citric acid on the chemical structure and mechanical properties of GG-PVA were investigated. The miscibility and other properties of the GG-PVA films with varying concentration of Citric acid were studied by Fourier Transform infrared Spectroscopy FTIr, Tensile strength (TS) Elongation at break (%E). The FTIr results showed that no esterification have taken place between citric acid and Guar Gum during processing at 40℃. So the citric acid acted as an internal Plasticizer, the tensile strength of film decreases as the concentration of citric acid increases from (10%-50%) the % elongation at break of films increases as the CA percentage increased (from 10% to 20% )and then decreased ( from 30% to 40%). The effect of borax on Guar Gum and GG-PVA blends with Citric acid as additive is also studied. The tensile strength of Guar Gum–borax films increases while % Elongation at break decreases as the concentration of borax is increased, it shows that borax act as a good cross linking agent where flexibility is not required. The nontoxic properties of citric acid prove worthy incorporation in GG-PVA films and such films would be showing potential application in food packaging industry and biomedical fields.

Incidence of Post-Operative Venous Thromboembolism Using Compression Ultrasonography Following Trauma to Spine and Long bones of Lower Extremity

background: Venous thromboembolism is an important and potentially a fatal complication if not suspected and treated promptly. Various diagnostic modalities are available to detect Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), but each has its merits and demerits. Compression ultrasonography is a non-invasive method to diagnose DVT. This study was undertaken to evaluate the incidence of DVT using compression ultrasonography in the patients who underwent surgery of the spine and long bones of lower extremity following trauma. Material & Methods: All patients who underwent surgery following trauma to the spine and long bones of lower extremity were screened using Venous b-mode ultrasonography and color Doppler imaging. None of the patients received prophylaxis against DVT. The patients were selected on the basis of the following findings: 1) Immediately in patients found to have clinical DVT following surgery;2) Every odd number of patients who underwent surgery and did not show signs and symptoms of DVT on the 7th, 14th post operative day and 6th post operative week. results: The incidence of DVT using compression ultrasonography in the patients who underwent surgery of the spine and long bones of lower extremity following trauma was 17 percent. The incidence of DVT has no correlation with various clinical variables. Conclusion: The observed incidence of DVT is reasonably high and it is a potential risk factor for the development of pulmonary embolism.
