The wave-particle duality of light is a controversial topic in modern physics. In this context, this work highlights the ability of the wave-nature of light on its own to account for the conservation of energy in light-matter interaction. Two simple fundamental properties of light as wave are involved: its period and its power P. The power P depends only on the amplitude of the wave’s electric and magnetic fields (Poynting’s vector), and can easily be measured with a power sensor for visible and infrared lasers. The advantage of such a wave-based approach is that it unveils unexpected effects of light’s power P capable of explaining numerous results published in current scientific literature, of correlating phenomena otherwise considered as disjointed, and of making predictions on ways to employ the electromagnetic (EM) waves which so far are unexplored. In this framework, this work focuses on determining the magnitude of the time interval that, coupled with light’s power P, establishes the energy conserved in the exchange of energy between light and matter. To reach this goal, capacitors were excited with visible and IR lasers at variable average power P. As the result of combining experimental measurements and simulations based on the law of conservation of energy, it was found that the product of the period of the light by its power P fixes the magnitude of the energy conserved in light’s interaction with the capacitors. This finding highlights that the energy exchanged is defined in the time interval equal to the period of the light’s wave. The validity of the finding is shown to hold in light’s interaction with matter in general, e.g. in the photoelectric effect with x-rays, in the transfer of electrons between energy levels in semiconducting interfaces of field effect transistors, in the activation of photosynthetic reactions, and in the generation of action potentials in retinal ganglion cells to enable vision in vertebrates. Potential of contemporary earth-sheltered buildings to achieve Plus Energy status in various European climates during the heating season

This study investigates the potential of contemporary Earth-Sheltered buildings to contribute to sustainable societies by achieving Plus Energy building status during the heating *** buildings analyzed are intended to house a four-member family(102.5 m^(2)).The house is equipped with a ground source heat pump,geothermal vertical probes,floor heating panels,an energy recovery ventilator,and building-integrated photovoltaic panels installed on the exposed building *** numerical analysis(using EnergyPlus software)was carried out for nine European sites covering five different climatic zones(namely:southern,Atlantic,continental,alpine,and northern climate)and three latitude belts spanning Europe from south to *** above 65°N(northern and alpine climate)could not achieve Plus Energy status with 20% efficient *** 15% efficient bIPVs,the building above 59°N(northern climate)was incapable of achieving this as *** the monthly time step,the buildings in the southern and Atlantic climates with 15% efficient biPVs were able to produce an energy surplus every month,as was the building in theAlps with 20% efficientbIPVs.

Characterizing occurrence of emerging organic contaminants in Dinaric karst catchment of Jadro andZrnovnica springs,Croatia

The occurrence of emerging organic contaminants(EOCs)was investigated in vulnerable Dinaric karst catchment of Jadro andZrnovnica springs in Croatia,under varying flow conditions and across three different water resource types(groundwater,springs,and surface water).The maximal EOCs concentration in both springs were observed following autumn recharge events,while during peak discharge no detection above the limits of detection(LOD)was recorded due to dilution *** to springs,groundwater from deep borehole exhibited highest total EOCs concentration under low flow conditions,underscoring the considerable karst aquifer vulnerability and its oligotrophic *** peak EOCs concentration in karstic Cetina River coincided with the river's lowest *** highest mass flux of 1013 g/day was determined for very mobile pharmaceutical metformin detected in *** presence of potentially persistent to very persistent compounds,like DEET and 1H-benzotriazole,which exhibited highest detection frequencies across all sampling sites,was observed in association with varying hydrological *** regarding the occurrence of identified EOCs include surface contamination infiltrating directly through ponors and highly karstified areas,potential persistence in the epikarst and aquifer matrix,and site-specific contamination sources for compounds such as 1H-benzotriazole,gabapentin,and ketoprofen found in *** evaluate the risk of inadvertent human exposure to EOCs across various age groups,we utilized measured spring concentrations and calculated drinking water equivalent levels(DWEL),which ranged from 1.4 mg/L for cotinine to 503 mg/L for sucralose,both detected in Jadro *** EOCs concentrations in ng/L are unlikely to pose a significant risk to healthy population,long-term exposure to EOCs mixture remains *** scarcity of research on EOCs in karst environments on both global and national levels,our study enhances comp

Therefore, it is necessary to develop the economy and means of competition which bring the value to the enterprise, and are also accepted in world＇s market. Also, the current state of the economy of Republic of Srpska has many problems and one of them are definitely the products which are not enough prepared through marketing, as well as the ignorance of problems and strategy of brand management, which will be presented in the paper. In other words, by focusing on the brand value and favorizing the factors which determine that value, it is possible to increase the income of domestic enterprises.

3D-printed scaffolds with 2D hetero-nanostructures and immunomodulatory cytokines provide pro-healing microenvironment for enhanced bone regeneration

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is driving forward the progresses of various engineering fields, including tissue engineering. However, the pristine 3D-printed scaffolds usually lack robust functions in stimulating desired activity for varied regeneration applications. In this study, we combined the two-dimensional (2D) hetero-nanostructures and immuno-regulative interleukin-4 (IL-4) cytokines for the functionalization of 3D-printed scaffolds to achieve a pro-healing immuno-microenvironment for optimized bone injury repair. The 2D hetero-nanostructure consists of graphene oxide (GO) layers, for improved cell adhesion, and black phosphorous (bP) nanosheets, for the continuous release of phosphate ions to stimulate cell growth and osteogenesis. In addition, the 2D hetero-nanolayers facilitated the adsorption of large content of immuno-regulative IL-4 cytokines, which modulated the polarization of macrophages into M2 phenotype. After in vivo implantation in rat, the immuno-functioned 3D-scaffolds achieved in vivo osteo-immunomodulation by building a pro-healing immunological microenvironment for better angiogenesis and osteogenesis in the defect area and thus facilitated bone regeneration. These results demonstrated that the immuno-functionalization of 3D-scaffolds with 2D hetero-nanostructures with secondary loading of immuno-regulative cytokines is an encouraging strategy for improving bone regeneration.

Public health aspects of visceral leishmaniasis in Montenegro

Leishmaniasis belongs to the parasitic communicable zoo noses, caused by members of Leishmania species. The infected phlebotomies sand fly carries the parasites, which cause the different forms of disease. Retrospective/prospective review of records for documented cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in period from 1992 to 2012 in Montenegro shows 83 diagnostic cases, and 1 (1.20%) case with dermal leichmaniasis. with 3 (3.61%) deaths cases. Analyses of age show: 36 (43.37%) children and 47 (56.63%) adults. Examinations are based on epidemiological, clinical, hematological, patohystological and serological investigations. Infection can be sub-clinically or clinically manifested with acute, sub-acute, and chronic type. Incubation in clinically manifested infections ranges from several weeks to several months. In our study, the prevalence of general infective syndrome is registered in all of 83 manifested cases (100%). Enlarged spleen in 79 (95.18%) cases, enlarged liver in 37 (44.57%) cases, anemia in 49 (59.04%) cases, pancytopenia in 32 (38.55%) cases, and increased activity of serum aminotransferases in 37 (44.57%) cases. The diagnosis was confirmed by an analysis of bone marrow biopsy material by direct microscopy of serial sections colored by Romanowski and Giemsa s staining, and by immune-biochemical methods. Serological diagnostic is confirmed by using agglutination test. In Montenegro (in humans and dogs) two types of leishmania (L) (L. donovani, L. infantum were presented). As to therapy treatment, the common treating is with antimony drugs: glucantime is relatively satisfactory for a long time. During 2008 there were registered cases not responding to the therapy and those were manifested with relapses after therapy. In the first line of therapy, we used meglumine antimony (Glucantime) in 78 (93.97%) patients. Resistence developed in 7 (8.97%) during treatment, and relapse occurred in 5 (6.41%) patients. Survival of dental implants in patients with bone dysplasia:A systematic review

Objective:This study used published studies to assess the survival rate of dental implants placed in patients with bone dysplasia of the maxillofacial *** and methods:An electronic search without a specified date range was performed using the MEDLINE,PubMed,EMbASE,Web of Science,and Cochrane *** gender or age restrictions were ***:Eighteen publications were found that met the study’s criteria,reporting data on 18 patients with bone dysplasia including cleidocranial dysplasia(CDD),fibrous dysplasia(FD),florid cemento-osseous dysplasia(FCOD),and odonto-maxillary segmental dysplasia(SOMD),who received a total of 130 implants,an average of 7.2 implants/patient(range 1 to 16).The mean age of the patients was 36.7 years(range 15 to 70 years).For implants placed in bone dysplasia,the survival rates were 100% for patients with CDD(n=8),FD(n=5),SOMD(n=2),FCOD with implants inserted far from the lesions(n=2)and 0% for dental implants inserted within FCOD(n=1).The mean follow-up was 38.2 months(min 6,max 60).Conclusions:Dental implants placed in patients with dysplastic bone lesions show high survival rates,similar to those in the general population for CDD,FD,and *** FCOD,the failure rate was 100%.
