Evaluation of Control Strategies for Cymbopogon nardus in Grazing Areas of Uganda

Cymbopogon nardus is an invasive grass weed in the grazing lands of Uganda affecting growth of desirable species and impeding movement of livestock. Farmers have for long used manual removal with a hand hoe to control the weed to allow growth of palatable species. In order to reduce on the drudgery associated with the hand hoe, a trial was set up to evaluate removal with a hand hoe, use of fire and spraying the weed with glyphosate herbicide to control Cymbopogon nardus. Eight treatments associated with the different control strategies were replicated on four sites in the land use system. both manual removal with a hand hoe and spraying with glyphosate herbicide were effective in controlling Cymbopogon nardus with 95% and 92% kill of Cymbopogon tussocks, respectively. The differences between the two control methods were not significant. Plant species biodiversity recovery was faster in the manually controlled plots than in those sprayed with glyphosate, but the number of species was not significantly different. The frequency of occurrence of species was however significantly different with manually controlled plots registering a higher frequency of the species. Fire had no effect as a control strategy, but instead increased the number of tussocks, growth vigour of the re-growth, flowering and hence seed setting. After three seasons, no significant difference was observed in species biodiversity between manual and herbicide control. These results suggest that herbicides could effectively be used to control Cymbopogon nardus to cut on costs and avoid the drudgery normally associated with manual control.

CD34-Negative b-Lymphoblastic Leukemia/Lymphoma Presenting as Cutenous Lesions at Infancy: A Case Report

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma is a highly aggressive neoplasm of precursor lymphoid (blast) cells. There are 2 main subtypes based on lymphoid lineage;b lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (b-ALL/LbL) and T lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (T-ALL/LbL). b-ALL/LbL commonly presents with fever, fatigue, bone or joint pain, bleeding or anorexia (signs of bone marrow infiltration), lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, involvement of skin, soft tissue and testes, with a predilection for the central nervous system. Immature cell markers, such as CD34 and TdT, can help to differentiate lymphoblasts from burkitt lymphoma which, is considered a mature high-grade b cell lymphoma that mimics lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia. Unfavorable prognostic factors include: infancy and adult age of diagnosis, high white blood cell count, slow response to initial therapy, central nervous system involvement at the time of diagnosis and Minimal residual disease after therapy. We present a case report of a 4 months old infant seen at a Tertiary Hospital with a rare presentation of CD34 Negative b-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma presenting as cutaneous lesions in infancy.

Various studies have established that feedstock choice,pyrolysis temperature,and pyrolysis type influence final biochar physicochemical ***,overarching analyses of pre-biochar creation choices and correlations to biochar characteristics are severely ***,the objective of this work was to help researchers,biochar-stakeholders,and practitioners make more well-informed choices in terms of how these three major parameters influence the final biochar *** approximately 5400 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 50,800 individual data points,herein we elucidate the selections that influence final biochar physical and chemical properties,total nutrient content,and perhaps more importantly tools one can use to predict biochar’s nutrient *** on the large dataset collected,it appears that pyrolysis type(fast or slow)plays a minor role in biochar physico-(inorganic)chemical characteristics;few differences were evident between production *** temperature,however,affects biochar’s longevity,with pyrolysis temperatures>500℃ generally leading to longer-term(i.e.,>1000 years)*** pyrolysis temperatures also led to biochars containing greater overall C and specific surface area(SSA),which could promote soil physico-chemical ***,based on the collected data,it appears that feedstock selection has the largest influence on biochar *** surface area is greatest in wood-based biochars,which in combination with pyrolysis temperature could likely promote greater changes in soil physical characteristics over other feedstock-based ***-and other grass-based biochars appear to have cation exchange capacities greater than other biochars,which in combination with pyrolysis temperature could potentially lead to longer-term changes in soil nutrient *** collected data also suggest that one can reasonably predict the availability of various biochar nutrients(e.g.,N,P

Mapping of topography and land use/cover as well as spring water yield measurements were done for 2 dambo-spring fed micro-catchments in Incalaue river *** springs are located near Ntimbo 1 and Lizongole human settlement areas in Niassa Special Reserve(NSR).Community consultations were used to asses locally perceived knowledge of dambo-spring catchments dependence by these communities and wildlife;as well as changes and *** Ntimbo 1 dambo-spring catchment(26.55 ***)has elevation gradient of 310 to 530 m a.s.l;and the area can topographically be linked to Incalaue river by delineation from a 90-meter spatial resolution Digital Elevation Model(DEM).The Lizongole dambo-spring catchment(1.33 ***)has elevation gradient of 300 to 360 m a.s.l and cannot easily be delineated from 90-meter *** catchments have the 6 vegetation classes existing in the area as well as farmlands and human settlement *** exists potential for wildlife-human water source conflict due to dambo dependence by humans and wildlife in the dry *** dambo-spring had a higher water yield per second than the Lizongole *** was no significant difference in spring yields of Ntimbo and Lizongole in the dry season(Pbe gauged in the wet season because of the wet dambo valley wetland *** was no significant reduction in water yield for Ntimbo spring during the dry season(Pbo spring could be from a confined aquifer;and Lizongole spring to be from a shallow unconfined *** study contributes understanding of the poorly-defined dambo areas by adding the role of groundwater in supporting micro-dambos which support herbaceous flora and graminivorous fauna as well as human populations in Incalaue basin in NSR especially in the dry season.

background: Flight and cabin crew are known to be at increased risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, ASCVD risks have not yet been compared in flight and cabin crew in low resource settings like sub-Saharan Africa. Objectives: To assess absolute ASCVD risk estimate and its clinical correlates among flight and cabin crew. Methods: From June 1st 2015 to December 30th 2015, 379 consecutive aviation navigants (Flight crew: 62.5%, pilots: 46.2%, women: 29.6%, Caucasians 23.2%) were enrolled in a cross-sectional survey of ASCVD risk estimate using the Framingham tools. They underwent a physical examination for either initial or renewal medical certificate Class 1 or 2 including blood chemistry, ECG, and echocardiogram as per International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA-DRC) medical regulations. We modeled the risk of moderate and high ASCVD estimate in a stepwise logistic regression. Results: Low, moderate and high ASCVD risk estimates were observed respectively in 248 (65.4%), 64 (16.9%), and 67 (17.7%) navigants. Moderate and high ASCVD risk estimates predominated among flight than cabin crew (23.6% vs. 5.6%;p 0.0001 and 28.3% vs. null;p 0.001), low ASCVD risk estimate among cabin than flight crew (94.4% vs. 48.1%;p ≤ 0.001). Our laboratory has pursued T cell therapy withantigen-specific T cell clones as means to treat *** studies in the prevention of CMV disease in immunosuppressed patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing bone marrow transplantation(bMT),in which patients receive infusions of CMV-speeific CD8^(+)and CD4^(+)T cell clones derived from the bMT donor,have highlighted the potential for amplifying human immune responses by transfer of antigen-specific T cells.

目的建立和评价一个新的多重和巢式PCR反向线点杂交试验(RLb)检测泌尿生殖道沙眼衣原体及其分型方法。方法该试验设计了3对引物分别针对CT外膜蛋白(omp1)基因VD2区和质粒进行扩增,用CT15种血清型(A、b/ba、C、D/Da、E、F、G/Ga、H、I/Ia、J、Ja、K、L1、L2和L3)探针与扩增后的产物杂交。经CObASAmplicor检测的355份标本,其中277份尿液,2份男性直肠拭子和78份女性宫颈试子,进行PCRRLb检测CT并分型。结果192份CObASAmplicor阳性标本中175份PCRRLb阳性,其中93.1%(163/175)的CT感染可被正确分型,其单一型感染分型结果与DNA测序结果一致。163份CObASAmplicor阴性标本中6份巢式PCRRLb阳性。85.3%(139/163)为单一型CT感染,最常见的CT是E(38.6%)F(28.5%)和D(18.2%)。14.7%(24/163)为CT混合感染,混合感染以H和K为主。结论PCRRLb检测CT是一种简便、快速、特异和敏感的方法,并准确的进行CT分型,为CT感染的临床诊断和分子流行病学研究提供了一种可靠的方法。

Differing profiles of people diagnosed with acute and chronic hepatitis b virus infection in british Columbia,Canada

AIM To describe the characteristics of people diagnosed with acute and chronic hepatitis b virus(HbV) infection in british Columbia(bC).METHODS We used data from the bC Hepatitis Testers Cohort(bCHTC),which includes all individuals tested for hepatitis C virus(HCV) or human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) or those diagnosed with HbV or active tuberculosis in bC since *** data were integrated with prescription drug,medical visit,hospitalization and mortality *** cases were classified as acute or chronic according to provincial *** compared characteristics of individuals by HbV infection group(acute,chronic and negative).Factors associated with acute or chronic HbV infection were assessed with multinomial logistic regression models in comparison to the HbV negative ***46498 of the 1058056 eligible bC-HTC participants were diagnosed with HbV infection.4.3% of HbV positive individuals were diagnosed with acute HbV infections while 95.7% had chronic *** alcohol use,injection drug use,and HIV or HCV co-infection were more common among individuals diagnosed with acute HbV compared to those with chronic infections and HbV negative *** multivariable multinomial logistic regression models,we observed significant associations between acute or chronic HbV diagnosis and being male,age at HbV diagnosis or birth cohort,South and East Asian ethnicity,HCV or HIV infection,and injection drug *** odds of acute HbV decreased with increasing age among people who inject drugs,while the opposite was true for chronic *** with acute HbV were predominantly White(78%) while those with chronic HbV were mostly East Asian(60%).Relative to Whites,East Asians had 12 times greater odds of being diagnosed with chronic HbV *** odds increased with increasing socioeconomic *** Differences in the profiles of people diagnosed with acute and chronic HbV infection necessitate differentiated screening,preven
