Algae and cyanobacteria are known to be able to remove a variety of pollutants from water,including toxic metal *** this study,algal and cyanobacterial species growing in two polluted water bodies were identified,and the Pb(Ⅱ)removal ability of these isolated species was *** on microscopic observations,27 species were identified,and nine species were isolated as pure ***(Ⅱ)bioremediation of five selected species(Anacystis sp.,Chlorella sp.1,Monoraphidium sp.,Phormidium sp.,and Uronema sp.)was studied in *** mean Pb(Ⅱ)removal abilities varied among these five species:Phormidium sp.>Monoraphidium sp.>Uronema sp.>Chlorella sp.1>Anacystis *** Pb(Ⅱ)tolerance of each species was determined based on the live cell percentage and biofilm formation *** a period of 3 d,Phormidium sp.,Monoraphidium sp.,and Uronema *** nearly 90%of survival,and all five species demonstrated biofilm formation capacities exceeding 50%.Furthermore,the Pb(Ⅱ)removal ability of the five species exhibited a strong positive correlation with the live cell percentage and showed a strong negative correlation with the biofilm formation *** conclusion,Phormidium sp.,Monoraphidium sp.,and Uronema *** high tolerances towards Pb(Ⅱ)and presented high removal ***,these species can be identified as potential sorbents for development of suitable adsorption systems to remove Pb(Ⅱ)from aqueous solutions.

Aluminium hydroxide precipitation from synthetic sodium aluminate solution was studied in the presence of hydrazine or hydrogen peroxide. The addition of low concentration of hydrazine is found to be effective, while higher amount of hydrogen peroxide is required to generate similar effect. XRD data confirm the product phase to be gibbsitic by nature. The scanning electron micrographs （SEM） show that agglomerated products form in the presence of hydrazine while fine discrete particles are produced with hydrogen peroxide. The probable mechanism of precipitation in the presence of hydrazine and hydrogen peroxide is also discussed.

One of the major classes of antioxidant enzymes, which protect the cellular and subcellular components against harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), is superoxide dismutase (SOD). SODs play pivotal role in scavenging highly reactive free oxygen radicals and protecting cells from toxic effects. In Oryza sativa three types of SODs are available based on their metal content viz. Cu-Zn SOD, Mn SOD and Fe SOD. In the present study attempts were made to critically assess the structure and phylogenetic relationship among Oryza sativa SODs. The sequence similarity search using local bLAST shows that Mn SODs and Fe SODs have greater degree of similarity compared with that of Cu-Zn SODs. The multiple alignment reveals that seven amino acids were found to be totally conserved. The secondary structure shows that Mn SODs and Fe SODs have similar helixes, sheets, turns and coils compared with that of Cu-Zn SODs. The comparative analysis also displayed greater resemblance in primary, secondary and tertiary structures of Fe SODs and Mn SODs. Comparison between the structure and sequence analysis reveals that Mn SOD and Fe SOD are found to be closely related whereas Cu-Zn SOD evolves independently.

In rice, the initiation of tillers is staggered and temporally spaced, but maturity is synchronous. Duration of growth in a later-initiated tiller on a higher culm node is shorter and it contributes less biomass and grain yield. The present investigation attempts to discover the manner in which ordered pattern of senescence in basipetal succession impacts source capacity of tillers in two contrasting rice cultivars, namely Lalat (high tillering) and MGD-106 (medium tillering) during the dry season of 2009 and ascertain how tiller production capacity influences dry matter partitioning and tiller dynamics of the plant. In both the rice cultivars, the progress of senescence among different types of tillers was indicated by gradual decline of photosynthetic pigments, total nitrogen and protein concentrations and increase of lipid peroxidation and peroxidase activity of the flag leaf, which affected photosynthetic efficiency. The effects were more pernicious on the newer tillers compared to older tillers. It was observed that metabolic dominance of the older tillers over newer tillers could be accrued due to higher photosynthetic source capacity of the former than that of the latter. It was concluded that flag leaf of a later-initiated tiller is less tolerant to senescence induced photo-oxidative stress, which decreases both source and sink activities. Increase of tiller number and order in rice increases vulnerability of the later-initiated tillers for oxidative stress and grain filling.
