A Matrix-Vector Operation-based Numerical Solution Method for Linear m-th Order Ordinary Differential Equations:Application to Engineering Problems

Many problems in engineering sciences can be described by linear,inhomogeneous,m-th order ordinary differential equations(ODEs)with variable *** this wide class of problems,we here present a new,simple,flexible,and robust solution method,based on piecewise exact integration of local approximation polynomials as well as on averaging local *** method is designed for modern mathematical software providing efficient environments for numerical matrix-vector operation-based *** on cubic approximation polynomials,the presented method can be expected to perform(i)similar to the Runge-Kutta method,when applied to stiff initial value problems,and(ii)significantly better than the finite difference method,when applied to boundary value ***,we use the presented method for the analysis of engineering problems including the oscillation of a modulated torsional spring pendulum,steady-state heat transfer through a cooling web,and the structural analysis of a slender tower based on second-order beam *** convergence studies provide insight into the satisfying characteristics of the proposed solution scheme.

Carbon nanotube-dependent synthesis of armchair graphene nanoribbons

Sub-nanometer armchair graphene nanoribbons(GNRs)with moderate band gap have great potential towards novel *** can be synthesized in the confined tubular space of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs),in which precursor molecules have been specifically designed to form the GNRs with certain width and ***,it is still unexplored how the diameter and metallicity of SWCNTs influence the synthesis of the ***,we applied a series of SWCNTs with different average diameters to study the diameter-dependent synthesis of *** using Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy,we found that the width of the GNRs can be tailored by the diameter of the ***,the SWCNTs with average diameter of 1.3 nm produced 6 and 7 armchair GNRs with the highest yield,which can be well explained by considering the width of the GNRs and van der Waals radius of hydrogen and carbon *** addition,semiconducting and metallic SWCNTs produced GNRs with different yields,which could attribute to different diameter distributions and density of *** results enable the possibility of a high-yield production of certain armchair graphene nanoribbons in large scale,which would benefit future applications as semiconductor with sub-nanometer in width.

MicroRNAs as novel predictive biomarkers and therapeutic targets in colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is the third most common cancer in western countries. Despite significant improvement in available treatment options, CRC still remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death. Traditionally, 5-fluorouracil has been used as the main chemotherapy drug for treatment of metastatic CRC(mCRC). However, during the last two decades more effective chemotherapeutic agents such as oxaliplatin, irinotecan and the monoclonal antibodies cetuximab, panitumumab and bevacizumab have been used in clinical practice. More recently, the therapeutic armamentarium has been supplemented by the monoclonal antibodies bevacizumab, cetuximab and panitumumab as well as the protein-trap aflibercept and the smallmolecule multi-kinase inhibitor regorafenib. One of the major problems for the management of CRC is the inherent or acquired resistance to therapeutic approaches. The discovery of microRNAs(miRNAs), a class of small, endogenous, non-coding, single-stranded RNAs that play a role as post-transcriptional regulators, has added new dimensions to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. because miRNAs are important regulators of carcinogenesis, progression, invasion, angiogenesis and metastases in CRC, they might serve as potential predictive and prognostic factors and even as therapeutic targets themselves. Several miRNAs are already known to be dysregulated in CRCs and have been linked to biological processes involved in tumor progression and response to anti-cancer therapies. This review summarizes current therapeutic approaches for treating CRC and highlights the role of miRNAs as novel predictive biomarkers and potential drug targets in CRC patients.

The J wave is a deflection that appears on the surface ECG as a late de lta wav e following the QRS complex. Also known as an Osborn wave, the J wave has been o bserved in various conditions and diseases. Our case highlights the typical elec trocardiographic manifestations of hypothermia including the J deflection and ST segment elevation during atrial fibrillation. Thorough knowledge of these findi ngs is important for prompt diagnosis and treatment of hypothermic states.
