Stress enhances expression of calcium-binding proteins and NmDAR subunit genes in the rat hippocampus

backgrounds:Oxidative stress impairs the function of calcium-binding proteins and deregulates calcium signaling in living *** have previously explored the overexpression of calcium-binding protein genes in a reactive oxygen and nitrogen species-induced in vitro cell model of stress that leads to ***,in in vivo models,low levels of stress leads to depressive-like ***,we aimed to analyze gene expression of major calcium-binding proteins(calcineurin,calmodulin,calsyntenin,synaptotagmin,and calreticulin)and N-methyl-D-aspartic acid(NmDA)receptor subunits(glutamate receptor ionotropic[GluN]GluN1,GluN2A,and GluN2b)in the hippocampus of stress-induced ***:Six-week-old male Wistar rats were assigned to two stress induction groups and a control group without stress(n=6).Stress was induced by using H_(2)O_(2)(3%in water)or by immobilization(using a sticky mat)over a period of 30 *** of calcium-binding protein genes in the hippocampus,antioxidant assays,structural alterations in hippocampal neurons,and depressive-like behavior were ***:Expression of genes encoding calcium-binding proteins calcineurin,calsyntenin,synaptotagmin and NmDA receptor subunit GluN1 was enhanced in both chemical and physical stress-induced rats compared with control rats(4.25±0.05 vs.1.03±0.02,pmpus were fewer and appeared disorganized compared with control ***,stressinduced rats showed decreased mobility and lower sucrose preference in behavioral studies compared with control ***:Lower levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species(RONS)can also lead to stress in rats by affecting their calcium signaling,buffering capacity in the neurons leading to depressive symptoms.

Chemical forms and extractability of iron in sediments of three contrasting lakes of China and UK

Iron is a limiting factor for the eutrophication of lakes, especially those lakes that are enriched with phosphorus. Extractability of iron in sediments of West Lake and Taihu Lake in China and Lower Lough Erne in Northern Ireland of UK was comparatively investigated on the basis of analysing chemical forms of iron using different extractants. It was shown that extractable iron in sediments of the lakes was greatly different using various extractants. Reactive iron or easily released iron such as “active" iron oxides, total free iron oxide and water-soluble iron was not high, only accounting for 0.01%—0.15% of total iron. The efficiency of the extractants for exchangeable iron was decreased in the sequence 0.1 mol/L HCl DTPA+TEA mixed solution > 1 mol/L NH 4OAc > 0.5 mol/L mgCl 2 = 0.5 mol/L CaCl 2. It seems that the complexion of iron by organic matter was not strong because the concentration of organically bound iron was significantly lower than the concentration it was forecasted. Extractable iron is not entirely consistent with or dependent on total iron in lake sediments. To a certain extent, phosphate can inhibit the release of iron in sediments of the lakes. The selection of extractants is thus the first key step to evaluate bioavailability of iron in lake sediments.

Performance evaluation of up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASb) reactor for treatment of paper mill wastewater

The present study deals with the performance evaluation of the UASb reactor under varied organic loading rate(OLR) for the treatment of paper mill wastewater. The sludge granulation process started after 120 days from the start-up period. Sludge granules size was found to be 0 8 mm at OLR of 1 72 kgCOD/(m 3·d), which reached maximum size of about 1 0 to 1 2 mm at OLR of 2 1 kgCOD/(m 3·d). At the end of initial OLR of 1 0 kgCOD/(m 3·d) the VSS concentration was 12 86 gVSS/L, which got increased to 38 05 gVSS/L at the end of an OLR 2 1 kgCOD/(m 3·d). most of the times VFA recorded were well within the limit of VFA reported in anaerobic fermentation process. many times the pH observed was between 6 5 and 7 8, which is more favorable for any anaerobic process. It is also found that pH within the reactor increases along with the height of reactor. The total maximum biogas production was found to be 0 40 L/gCOD removals at OLR of 2 1 kgCOD/(m 3·d) and the maximum bOD removal at this stage was observed to be 90%.

Origin and geochemistry of Pan-African granitoid rocks in the Gabal Um Shomer area,Southwestern Sinai,Egypt

Geological, petrological and geochemical studies indicated that there are two distinct types of granitoid rocks: older quartz diorites to granodiorite assemblage and younger granitoids, the latter occurring in two phases. The older granitoids have a meta-aluminous chemistry and a calc-alkaline character, with high mgO, Fe2O3, TiO2, CaO, P2O5, Sr and low SiO2, K2O, and Rb. Their major and trace elements data, together with low 87Sr/ 86Sr ratios (0.7029±0.0008) are indicative of I-type affinities. The second- and third-phase granitoids range from calc-alkaline to alkaline, respectively. The second-phase granitoids have a peraluminous chemistry and high Sr, ba, CaO, mgO, Al2O3 and Ti2O and low SiO2, K2O, Nb, Y and Rb relative to the third-phase granitoids. The corundum normative nature and field observations suggested that it was formed by partial melting of the lower crust. The third-phase granitoids are alkaline in nature and characterized by higher SiO2, Rb, Y, Nb and lower mgO, Sr and ba values than the younger granitoids (phase Ⅱ). They are A-type granitoids which were generated from below or within the existing continental crust.

Stability of fluid flow in a brinkman porous medium–A numerical study

The stability of fluid flow in a horizontal layer of brinkman porous medium with fluid viscosity different from effective viscosity is investigated. A modified Orr-Sommerfeld equation is derived and solved numerically using the Chebyshev collocation method. The critical Reynolds number Re, the critical wave number ac and the critical wave speed cc are computed for various values of porous parameter and ratio of viscosities. based on these parameters, the stability characteristics of the system are discussed in detail. Streamlines are presented for selected values of parameters at their critical state.
