Application of QUAL2k for Water Quality Modeling of River Ghataprabha （India）

River Ghataprabha, during its course through belgaum district in karnataka state （India）, receives untreated domestic waste from Gokak town and other neighboring villages situated on the bank of the river. The present study involves the application of water quality model QUAL2k to predict the water quality of this polluted segment of the river. The model was calibrated and validated for biochemical oxygen demand （bOD）, dissolved oxygen （DO） and total nitrogen （TN） in pre-monsoon season. Data for calibration and validation were obtained after the field and laboratory measurements. The performance of the model was evaluated using statistics based on standard errors （SE） and mean multiplicative errors （MME）. The model represented the field data quite well with some exceptions. In spite of some differences between the measured and simulated data sets at some points, the calibration and validation results are acceptable especially for the developing countries where the financial resources are often limited for frequent monitoring campaigns and higher accuracy data analysis.

Hydrological impacts of afforestation-A review of research in India

We review the current status of experimental studies in India to understand the linkages between afforestation and hydrology. This discipline deals with the use and management of water, social awareness of environmental problems, and ecosystem limitations on provision of watershed services by river basins in the mountain regions of India. Our review begins with examination of experimental works in tropical countries and proceeds to discussion of initiatives of Indian research institutes and Government organizations towards establishing experimental watersheds to understand the impacts of land cover changes on hydrologic regimes in the Indian sub-continent. This is followed by the review of the experimental work carried out by various authors to assess the impact of land cover changes on major water balance components such as, runoff, groundwater, evapotranspiration and sediment yield. The spatial scales of these experiments have been limited to small watersheds or field plots. This paper also describes impacts of human interventions （such as planta- tions of exotic forest species to restore degraded landscapes） on the water balance components in diverse hydro-geo-environmental conditions in the Indian sub-continent. We focus on identifying the research areas which require immediate attention to develop tools to assist planners and policy makers in assessing and managing the water resources in these complex environments. The review is largely based on research results reported during the last 20 to 30 years.

In coastal areas of our country,in spite of having excess rainfall(more than 3000 mm),groundwater become a rare commodity during *** of researchers have discussed the issues related to water scarcity of coastal areas where there is a huge pressure on environment due to increased population,tourism,agriculture and industrial *** depletion of groundwater is also reported in coastal districts due to continuous discharge of direct runoff and also through subterranean flow which is termed as Submarine Groundwater Discharges(SGD).Large quantity of contaminants enter the ocean system through *** necessitated a detailed investigation to understand the hydrological processes involved and the source of *** present investigation is an attempt to make quantitative and qualitative assessment of SGD based on hydrological,hydrogeological and hydrochemical ***,water balance components were evaluated based on hydrological and hydrogeological *** parameters were also evaluated to understand the impact of seawater intrusion in pre and post-monsoon of *** revealed that,there are signatures of considerable quantity of submarine groundwater discharge in parts of Honnavara,kumta,Ankola and karwar *** influence of seawater in coastal aquifers is quite rare all along the coast of Uttara kannada district which is attributed to high groundwater recharge(15-20%)occurring in catchment areas.
