The development of antib.otics is regarded as one of the most significant scientific advances in modern medicine. b.fore the commercialization of antib.otics, infectious diseases were catastrophic throughout history [1]. Penicillin was used to treat serious infections in the 1940s, b.t unfortunately, with the introduction of antib.otics came the emergence of antib.otic resistance [2,3]. Evolved and adapted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are presently impacting community and healthcare systems across the glob. [4].

The entropy generation and heat transfer characteristics of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) third-grade fluid flow through a vertical porous microchannel with a convective b.undary condition are analyzed. Entropy generation due to flow of MHD non-Newtonian third-grade fluid within a microchannel and temperature-dependent viscosity is studied using the entropy generation rate and Vogel's model. The equations describ.ng flow and heat transport along with b.undary conditions are first made dimensionless using proper non-dimensional transformations and then solved numerically via the finite element method (FEM). An appropriate comparison is made with the previously pub.ished results in the literature as a limiting case of the considered prob.em. The comparison confirms excellent agreement. The effects of the Grashof numb.r, the Hartmann numb.r, the b.ot numb.r, the exponential space-and thermal-dependent heat source (ESHS/THS) parameters, and the viscous dissipation parameter on the temperature and velocity are studied and presented graphically. The entropy generation and the b.jan numb.r are also calculated. From the comprehensive parametric study, it is recognized that the production of entropy can b. improved with convective heating and viscous dissipation aspects. It is also found that the ESHS aspect dominates the THS aspect.

Affinity Solvents for Intensified Organics Extraction: Development Challenges and Prospects

In most organics extraction processes, the commonly used solvents employ solely physical interactions. Therefore, for the recovery and purification of products from complex mixtures, the selectivity and/or capacity of classical solvents towards the desired solutes is usually insufficient, enforcing the need for complex and thus expensive separation schemes. Significant simplification and cost-reduction can b. achieved when affinity solvents would b. availab.e that are ab.e to recognize the solutes of interest b. their molecular structure. The main development challenges to estab.ish such affinity solvents are： Selection and incorporation of molecular recognition and complexation capab.lities; Evaluation of extraction capab.lities; Efficient re- covery and recycling of the affinity solvents; Implementation in industrial extraction equipment. This paper presents how these development challenges are addressed at the University of Twente, going all the way from affinity solvent design and synthesis, via high throughput screening and characterization up to pilot plant evaluation. Essential in the successful development of affinity solvents are structural cooperations with molecular chemists and custom synthesis companies for their design and synthesis. The various aspects are illustrated b. several examples where newly developed environmentally b.nign affinity solvents appeared ab.e to create major b.eakthroughs. The applications addressed involve oxygenates, sugars, and pharmaceutical ingredients, such as optical isomers and b.omolecules.

An optimal assessment method for the design of accelerograph arrays to monitor the seismic response of high-rise b.ildings is pre-sented. This method uses a finite element model of the structure b.sed on a simplified multi-degree-of-freedom system model defined using the parameter identification method. The off-diagonal element of the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) matrix of mode is taken as the target function in order to facilitate the selection of optimum locations. An example for a high-rise b.ilding in Dalian indicates that a minimum of 15 locations provide the optimum sites for monitoring the dynamic response of the selected b.ilding in view of eco-nomic b.nefit.

Trees of the genus Ficus, integral components of indigenous rainfed agro-ecosystems of the southern dry agro-climatic zone of Karnataka, southern India, have traditionally b.en associated with the ecological service of soil quality enhancement in addition to various direct use b.nefits. We assessed the soil enrichment service of Ficus b.nghalensis L. a common Ficus species in these agroforestry systems, b. quantifying nutrient return via litter fall. Litterfall estimation and chemical analysis of litter showed that F. b.nghalensis trees produce 3,512 kg ha-1 of litter annually which, on decomposition, can satisfy up to 76.70 % of N, 20.24% of P and 67.76% of K requirements of dryland crops annually per hectare. This can lead to an avoided cost of compost of US $ 36.46 ha-1·a-1 in dryland farming systems. The slow rate of decay of Ficus litter, as revealed in litter decomposition studies indicates its potential as ideal mulch for dryland soils. We discuss the complementarity b.tween Ficus litterfall and cropping patterns in Mandya, and its implications for rainfed agricultural systems.

Titanium machining is one of the challenging tasks to modem machining processes. Especially fab.icat- ing microfeatures on titanium appear as a potential research interest. Electrochemical micromachining （EMM） is an effective process to generate microfeatures b. anodic dis- solution. Machining of titanium b. anodic dissolution is different than other metals b.cause of its tendency to form passive oxide layer. The phenomenon of progression of microfeature b. conversion of passive oxide layer into transpassive has b.en investigated with the help of mask- less EMM technique. Suitab.e range of machining voltage has b.en estab.ished to attain the controlled anodic disso- lution of titanium b. converting passive oxide film of titanium into transpassive with nonaqueous electrolyte. The experimental outcomes revealed that the micromachining of titanium with controlled anodic dissolution could b. possib.e even at lower machining voltage in the range of 6-8 V. This work successfully explored the possib.lity of generation of microfeatures on commercially pure titanium b. anodic dissolution process in microscopic domain b. demonstrating successful fab.ication of various microfea- tures, such as microholes and microcantilevers.

While non-point pollution from agriculture has b.come an increasingly serious prob.em in China, some progress has b.en made in studying the causal b.ophysical processes. However, few studies have assessed the economic consequences of non-point pollution in China or the policy options that could b. employed to comb.t it. In this work a sustainab.e strategy to control non-point pollution from crop production, which involved taxing excessive inputs of irrigation water and fertilizer, was proposed. The approach taken to assess these measures comb.ned b.ophysical and economic models,having a trade-off b.tween economic returns and an improved environment. A proven and practical spatially referenced water and nutrient management model was used to determine the quantities of excessive irrigation water and fertilizer for specific soil and land use. Also, a set of indicators were proposed for evaluating the effects of agricultural economic output and agricultural practices on the environment.
