The Effect of Atmospheric Oxygen on the Puffing and b.rsting Phenomena during Vegetab.e Oils Droplets Vaporization Process for Their Use as b.ofuel in Diesel Engine

The past literature on the use of vegetab.e oils as fuel in diesel engine revealed that utilizing vegetab.e oil fuels in diesel engines may require property changes in the oil or perhaps, some minor engine modifications or operating changes. This study was conducted to search for the effect of atmospheric oxygen on the puffing and b.rsting phenomena that occur during vegetab.e oils droplet vaporization process in their use as fuel in diesel engine. The fib.r-suspended droplet technique was used, and the normalized square droplet diameter as well as the temperature evolution vicinity the droplet was analyzed. The results show that puffing and b.rsting phenomena highly depend on oxygen. In presence of atmospheric oxygen, there is an increase of the puffing and b.rsting intensity and therefore the evaporation rate of the vegetab.e oil droplets, b.t in an inert environment or when the environment is oxygen-depleted puffing and b.rsting phenomena disappearing and make place of a series of explosions with lower magnitude. The lack of oxygen reduces the thermal degradation, polymerization and oxidation reactions and consequently the vaporization rate of vegetab.e oils droplets;and could therefore lead to the formation of deposits in the form of polymers. This is unsuitab.e for their use as a fuel in diesel engines. It can also b. concluded that atmospheric oxygen has some positive effects on engine performance and emissions when operating with vegetab.e oil. These results help to address the challenge for the use of alternative fuels such as non-edib.e vegetab.e oils.

Experimental Study on Performance and Comb.stion Analysis of a Diesel Engine Fueled with Diesel and Jatropha Oil b.ended with Heptane

This work focuses on b.ending Jatropha oil with diesel fuel and heptane to improve its physico-chemical characteristics for production of b.ends and their use as fuel in a diesel engine. The influence of the heptane content was evaluated b. comparing the results ob.ained from the engine (performance and comb.stion parameters) with those of the diesel fuel and straight Jatropha oil. The results ob.ained show an improvement in engine performance especially at low loads. Specifically, a reduction in the specific fuel consumption of the engine is ob.ained when the heptane content in the mixture is around 10% compared to that ob.ained with pure Jatropha oil. The b.st results were ob.ained with the b.end containing 70% Jatropha oil, 20% diesel fuel and 10% heptane (J70G20H10). Overall engine efficiency and exhaust gas temperatures are comparab.e for all fuels tested. Engine comb.stion parameters are improved with J70G20H10. The results ob.ained with J70G20H10 are close to those of the engine operating on diesel fuel. The cyclic dispersion is low with coefficients of variation of the indicated mean effective pressure (COVb.IMEPb.) whose values are less than 10%. The lowest values of the COVb.IMEPb. are ob.ained with the b.end J70G20H10.
