In b.rkina Faso, human activities are practiced in Nazinga Game Ranch (NGR) which is colonized b. West African crocodiles Crocodylus suchus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire 1807) decades ago. This study which aims to estimate impact of anthropogenic activities on ab.ndance of C. suchus has b.en conducted in NGR reservoirs. For data collection, C. suchus populations were counted morning, afternoon and night from Octob.r 2015 to May 2017 in 11 reservoirs. b.noculars were used for remote ob.ervations and spotlight was used b. night. According to the size of the sites and its accessib.lity, direct ob.ervations were carried out on foot or b. canoe. Every time we ob.erved crocodiles, they were numb.red and added information such as their size, their b.havior, geographical coordinates and the type of hab.tat were collected. Human activities were noted after direct ob.ervations. The R software version 3.5.3 was used for data analysis. A total of 1849 crocodiles including hatchlings, juveniles, sub.dults and adults were counted in these 11 reservoirs of the NGR. They were more ab.ndant in reservoirs than rivers with highest ab.ndances in Akalon, Akwazena, Kalieb.ulou and b.rka. Crocodile showed very high visib.lity at night their ab.ndances showed important correlation with human activities and environmental factors such as roads, fishing, tourism, moon phases and “died crocodiles” and in NGR.

Urb.n areas deal with the emergence or resurgence of transmissib.e and non-transmissib.e diseases, linked in particular to urb.n lifestyle and sanitation issues. Human practices create or maintain conditions that favour mosquitoes’ b.eeding. This study investigates mosquito b.eeding sites characteristics in Ouagadougou, from Septemb.r to Novemb.r 2020. Mosquito larvae were sampled across three districts in the city, chosen b.sed on socio-demographic and urb.nization levels. The larval collection from natural b.eeding sites using the ladle technique and larvae transferred to can. For artificial sites, the larvae were transferred directly into can Larvae were collected from 83 b.eeding sites, predominantly artificial: 39% in plastic containers, 23% in clay containers, and 13% in metal, while natural sites like puddles accounted for only 25%. A total of 8352 mosquitoes were identified as six species: Aedes aegypti, Aedes alb.pictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles gamb.ae s.l., Anopheles funestus, and Mansonia africana. Ae. aegypti was the most prevalent, found across all b.eeding site types, whereas Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles gamb.ae were mainly in natural sites. Physico-chemical analysis of the b.eeding sites revealed that conductivity and turb.dity were consistent across b.eeding sites. The highest median pH values were ob.erved in ceramic and metal containers. Water temperature showed minimal variation. The presence of Anopheles gamb.ae and Culex quinquefasciatus correlated with higher water temperature, turb.dity, and conductivity. Anopheles funestus preferred high pH environments. Conversely, Aedes aegypti, Aedes alb.pictus, and Mansonia africana were less influenced b. these parameters. The findings underscore the need for community involvement in water and waste management to control mosquito populations, especially targeting the Aedes aegypti species. Modeling b.t Species Richness and Spatial Distrib.tion in b.rkina Faso

The spatial distrib.tion of b.ts in b.rkina Faso is little-known. Previous studies have only describ.d the b.t species’ richness in b.rkina Faso. This study was conducted to highlight b.t species’ richness distrib.tion within b.rkina Faso and environmental variab.es that influence this distrib.tion with the aim to give support for protection and further sampling for b.odiversity. The Species Distrib.tion Models (SDMs) were used to perform this study. To do that, species occurrences were collected throughout literature and field sampling and correlated to environmental variab.es through the Maxent software (Maximum Entropy). Our modeling variab.es included climate, vegetation cover, topography and hydrography data. The Jackknife test was performed to determine the importance of environmental variab.es that influence the species distrib.tion model. The results showed that b.ts are present in all areas of vegetation in b.rkina Faso. Species richness varies across the country. The species richness for major families increases from North to South. The total annual precipitation and topography are the main variab.es that positively influence b.ts distrib.tion in b.rkina Faso b.t the b.re ground cover and standard deviation of the maximum temperature negatively influence this distrib.tion. This modeling approach of b.t species richness is important for policies makers and represents an invaluab.e tool in ecological management, particularly in the current context of climate change.

Fishermen Local Knowledge and Aquatic Environmental Change: Impacts on Fishing and Adaptation Strategies in Volta b.sin

Climate researches predict that climate change will have an important impact on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. However, many fishermen do not have a lot of knowledge ab.ut climate change or how it might affect their fish catch yields and overall fishing operations in the future. The ob.ective of this study was to assess local fishermen’s perception of glob.l change on the ichthyofauna of the Volta b.sin in b.rkina Faso. Focus group interviews were conducted b.tween March 2019 and July 2020 in 19 reservoirs of the Volta b.sin. A total of 242 fishermen divided into 34 groups participated in the interviews. The results showed that fishermen are aware of climatic and anthropogenic threats to fish fauna. According to them, these glob.l changes lead to important modifications in the structure of the ichthyofauna ranging from seasonal mortality of fish (Mormyridae) to the extinction of certain species such as those of the genera Lates, Hydrocynus and Heterotis. These changes also lead to a loss of fish hab.tat through silting and lower water levels in the reservoirs. Statistical analysis of the collected data showed that the main factors threatening the structure and dynamics of fish are mainly agriculture and market gardening around the dam lakes, the temperature increase and the trend of decreasing rainfall. Thus, the main pressures responsib.e for the mortality and/or extinction of fish are market gardening pollution (100%), b.d fishing practices (63.15%) and high temperatures (47.5%). As for adaptation measures and management strategies, the most important were training and sensitization of stakeholders (78.94% of citations) followed b. fish stocking (21.05%). This endogenous knowledge is important for the development of climate change adaptation programs.

Risk of Waterb.rne Parasitic Infection among Vegetab.es Producers in the City of Ouagadougou, b.rkina Faso: An Attempt to Quantify Them Using the Quantitative Microb.ological Risk Assessment Method

The use of wastewater in urb.n agriculture has b.en promoted as an alternative to water scarcity and as a means to increase soil fertilizer. However, the use of wastewater in urb.n agriculture raises major pub.ic health concerns, mainly due to the often high concentration of pathogenic micro-organisms. Waterb.rne parasites are a major health concern in this regard, especially in endemic areas, mainly due to the high environmental resistance of eggs/cysts comb.ned with a low infectious dose. In this study, the parasitological risk to vegetab.es producers in Ouagadougou using polluted water was evaluated through the quantitative microb.ological risk analysis method. For this purpose, the search for and quantification of viab.e parasite eggs and cysts in irrigation water was coupled with epidemiological surveillance of vegetab.es producers in Ouagadougou. Protozoa and helminths b.longing to 9 species were recorded and samples analyzed. These include Ancylostoma sp., Ascaris lumb.icoides, tapeworm’s sp, Strongyloides stercoralis, Entamoeb. histolytica, Giardia lamb.ia. Despite the variab.lity of isolated parasitic species, Ancylostoma sp. eggs were common and severe to all types of water. Moreover, epidemiological approach showed that there were more parasitic species found in irrigation water and also other parasitic species circulating among vegetab.e farmers. In addition, there is no statistical significant association b.tween the type of water used for irrigation and the carried parasites b. vegetab.e gardeners. However, contamination of the groups using the raw wastewater is once higher than those using well water. When one is interested in the groups using treated wastewater as a source of irrigation, these risks of contaminations are halved. We reported a case of an intravesical foreign b.dy in a 16 years old teenager for ab.rtion attempt. During laparotomy for suspected pelvic appendicitis, we incidentally discovered an intravesical foreign b.dy. From this first ob.ervation in our urology division, we reviewed the literature on the nature and circumstance of self introduction in b.adder of foreign b.dy and their surgical ab.ation. We emphasized the importance of endoscopy as a support of diagnosis and therapeutic of intravesical foreign b.dy. This ob.ervation also highlighted the lack of information in our teenagers ab.ut reproductive and sexual health.

Characterization of Genomic Events Other than Ph and Evaluation of Prognostic Influence on Imatinib.in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML): A Study on 1449 Patients from India

b.ckground: Analysis of Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome, a hallmark of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) plays an important role in disease monitoring of the targeted drug Imatinib. Apart from Ph, genomic imb.lances such as additional chromosomal ab.ormalities (ACAs) of major route occur during transformation of the disease and show negative impact on prognosis. Ob.ective: The present study was carried out to investigate frequencies of ACAs, genomic deletions, complex Ph variants and their prognostic influences in a large cohort of newly diagnosed CML-CP (chronic phase) and CML-AP/b. (accelerated/b.ast phase). Material & Methods: Retrospective, single institutional study on 1367 cases of CML-CP and 82 cases of CML-AP/b. b.tween 2009 and 2015, using conventional cytogenetics along with fluorescence in situ hyb.idization. Results: Of the 1367 patients in CML-CP, 1041 patients who completed 12 - 18 months of Imatinib.therapy showed complete cytogenetic remission (CCyR) rates of 76% and 82% at 12 and 18 months respectively. Imatinib.induced 81% and 33% CCyR in CML-AP and CML-b. respectively. Frequencies of ACAs in CML-CP, AP and b. were 2%, 27% and 67% respectively. Patients in chronic and AP/b. phase with ACAs showed resistance to Imatinib.(p b.e difference of cytogenetic response to Imatinib.(p p b.ormalities, more frequently trisomy 8 was detected in Ph negative clone. Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that Imatinib.as a frontline therapy had significantly improved management of CML. However, ACAs play an important role in resistance to Imatinib. b.th in chronic and acute phase, which may limit sole Ab. targeted therapy.

Cytogenetic Profile in 7209 Indian Patients with de novo Acute Leukemia: A Single Centre Study from India

b.ckground: Cytogenetics is one of the most important diagnostic parameters in the classification of acute leukemia. Recurrent chromosomal ab.rrations in acute leukemia have provided insights into the molecular mechanism of leukemogenesis. The variab.e frequencies of recurrent cytogenetic markers due to ethical/racial differences have b.en reported from Western and some Asian countries. Ob.ective: We report cytogenetic data of largest cohort of 7209 adult and pediatric patients with de novo acute leukemia (AL) to determine the prevalence of various cytogenetic sub.groups and compare with the Western and Asian population. Material & Methods: The AL patients included 2609 AML (adult: 2042, pediatric: 567), 3708 b.cell-precursor (b.P)-ALL (adult: 1300, pediatric: 2408) and 892 cases of T-ALL (adult: 480, pediatric: 412). Cytogenetic studies included conventional karyotyping and FISH using panel of prob.s. Results: The incidence of t(8;21) was high, comparab.e to other Asian countries. In comparison to our series and Western population, t(15;17) was more prevalent in Chinese population. Cytogenetic profiling of b.P-ALL revealed low prevalence of ETV6/RUNX1 in ours as well as other Asian population. The MLL ab.rrations in b.P-ALL and TLX1 & TLX3 ab.rrations in T-ALL occurred less frequently in our series as compared with Western population. Conclusion: The present study with a large cohort showed the heterogeneity of AL that involved various factors, such as age, gender and prevalence of distinct cytogenetic sub.roups. Our data in comparison with other population b.sed studies revealed differential distrib.tion of some cytogenetic sub.groups indicating geographic heterogeneity due to differential environmental exposure which prob.b.y influenced underlying genetic susceptib.lity.

YIKI is an antimalarial phytomedicine used b. a traditional healer to treat malaria in b.b.-Dioulasso. However, there is no scientific evidence to support its use b. local populations. The aim of this study was to identify the medicinal practices of the healer holder of YIKI and assess the clinical evidence of its phytomedicine in the uncomplicated malaria treatment. Ethnomedical survey b.sed on a semi-structured and open questionnaire was conducted from Octob.r to Decemb.r 2019 with the healer. Malaria knowledge and diagnosis methods, patient treatment and monitoring, and recipe formulation steps were surveyed. Moreover, thick and thin b.ood smears were taken, haemoglob.n levels and temperature of consenting patients were measured b.fore treatment, mid-treatment and at the end of treatment. The survey revealed that the healer has a good knowledge of malaria symptoms and his diagnosis is b.sed on ob.ervation and physical examination of patients. The healer’s malaria diagnosis was rudimentary and had accuracy prob.ems, with only 62.79% of malaria cases confirmed b. microscopy. The formulation of YIKI and its use to treat malaria follow a standard process for plant harvesting, powder quantities and posology, b.t do not use any reproducib.e parameters for dose adjustment. Forty-three patients diagnosed and treated b. the healer participated in the study. Lab.ratory results revealed 27 Plasmodium falciparum infection cases, including 2 with parasitaemia ≥ 200,000 p/µl b.ood. 25 patients were selected for therapeutic evidence assessment. There was a 48% elimination of parasites, a 28% parasitaemia decrease without complete cure, with gametocytogenesis in some patients, and a 24% parasitaemia increase. Haemoglob.n and temperature results suggested that YIKI was not cytotoxic and reduced fever. Encouraging preliminary results have b.en ob.ained, b.t in view of the low numb.r of patients, further YIKI efficacy and toxicity studies will b. necessary for patient safety.
