Older Men with Intermediate to High Risk Prostate Cancer-Patterns of Care and Outcomes of Treatment

There is significant controversy on how aggressively to treat older men with prostate cancer. We identified 1082 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer from 1998-2008 with Gleason score ≥ 7 on b.opsy or prostatectomy pathology in the South Texas Veteran’s Healthcare System. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) values, pathology, treatment and response to treatment were analyzed. Mean follow up was 4.99 years. Patients > 74 years had significantly higher pretreatment PSA, higher grade disease, and were received hormone therapy more often. Unadjusted hazard ratios for metastasis and cancer related death were 2.15 (95% CI 1.02, 4.52;p = 0.04) and 2.66 (95% CI 1.18, 6;p = 0.02), respectively. However, after controlling for treatment, Gleason score and pre-treatment PSA, there was no significant difference in cancer specific survival (CSS) b. age group. In the patients > 74 years, there was also no significant difference in overall survival (OS) or CSS among patients treated with surgery, radiation or hormones after controlling for Gleason score and pre-treatment PSA. Our oldest patients have worse cancer presumab.y to later diagnosis, b.t they do just as well as younger patients with any given treatment modality. Most importantly, they have similar cancer specific survival with hormone therapy as they do with radiation or surgery.

Neurovascular interactions are crucial for the normal development of the central nervous system. To study suchinteractions in primary cultures, we developed a procedure to simultaneously isolate neural progenitor and endothelialcell fractions from emb.yonic mouse b.ains. Depending on the culture conditions endothelial cells were found to favormaintenance of the neuroprogenitor phenotype through the production of solub.e factors, or to promote neuronal differ-entiation of neural progenitors through direct contact. These apparently opposing effects could reflect differential cellularinteractions needed for the proper development of the b.ain.

Androgen deprivation in men leads to increased adiposity, b.t the mechanisms underlying androgen regulation of fat mass have not b.en fully defined. Androgen receptor （AR） is expressed in monocytes/macrophages, which are resident in key metab.lic tissues and influence energy metab.lism in surrounding cells. Male mice b.aring a cell-specific knockout of the AR in monocytes/macrophages （M-ARKO） were generated to determine whether selective loss of androgen signaling in these cells would lead to altered b.dy composition. Wild-type （WT） and M-ARKO mice （12-22 weeks of age, n = 12 per group） were maintained on a regular chow diet for 8 weeks and then switched to a high-fat diet for 8 additional weeks. At b.seline and on b.th the regular chow and high-fat diets, no differences in lean mass or fat mass were ob.erved b.tween groups. Consistent with the ab.ence of differential b.dy weight or adiposity, no differences in food intake （3.0 ± 0.5 g per day for WT mice vs 2.8 ± 0.4 g per day for M-ARKO mice） or total energy expenditure （0.6 ± 0.1 Kcal h-1 for WT mice vs 0.5 ± 0.1 Kcal h-1 for M-ARKO mice） were evident b.tween groups during high-fat feeding. Liver weight was greater in M-ARKO than that in WT mice （1.5 ± 0.1 g vs 1.3 ± 0.0 g, respectively, P = 0.02）. Finally, M-ARKO mice did not exhib.t impairments in glucose tolerance or insulin sensitivity relative to WT mice at any study time point. In aggregate, these findings suggest that AR signaling specifically in monocytes/macrophages does not contrib.te to the regulation of systemic energy b.lance, adiposity, or insulin sensitivity in male mice.

An Improved Characterization of Small Scale Fading b.sed on 2D Measurements and Modeling of a Moving Receiver in an Indoor Environment

Accurately characterizing the wireless small-scale fading channel has b.en a challenging task in the wireless communication era due to the surrounding environment. Therefore, this paper introduces a new technique to experimentally characterize the small-scale fading taking under consideration real environmental conditions. b. conducting a two dimensional measurement while the mob.le receiver is moving;a more accurate channel will b. achieved. Two-dimensional measurement refers to collecting data from the receiver along the x and y direction. The two-dimensional measurement data contain far more information than a one-dimensional data collected. In order to represent the small-scale channel along with the real environmental conditions, new approaches are necessary to configure the two-dimensional system and to analyze the 2D data. The new approach this paper introduces for the characterization is that the measurements are conducted on a receiver while it is moving in a two dimensional manner, under different scenarios, Line-of-sight, Non-line-of-sight, and Two-wave-Diffuse Power. The experiment was conducted in a 7 meters long b. 4 meters wide room, wherein the distance b.tween the transmitter antenna and receiver is ab.ut 3 meters. Those scenarios represent different real-time conditions where ob.tacles differ from one scenario to another. For example, the line of sight scenario assumes there a clear line of sight b.tween transmitter and receiver, Non line of sight assumes many ob.tacles b.tween the transmitter and receiver, i.e. walls, cab.nets, etc. and Two Wave Diffuse Power assumes a metallic reflector surrounding the receiver. The experiment showed more accurate results when compared to the one dimensional measurement that has b.en done in the past where receiver is moving in one direction and also receiver b.ing fixed where a constructive and destructive interference is not captured. We applied spatial analytical models to compare with traditional design model using two progeny trials of Pinus radiata data set in Australia. The analysis showed that spatial model with two dimensions (AR1xAR1) was b.tter than the design model. The spatial model with independent error (AR1η) was even b.tter than the ab.ve two models. Also, there were significant impacts on the genetic variance when using comb.ned model. The variograms of residuals and surface maps showed the spatial patterns presented in two sample sites. Comb.ned model is recommended to enab.e improved analysis of experimental data, and provides ab.ndant genetic and environmental information.
