Microscopic damage evolution of anisotropic rocks under indirect tensile conditions: Insights from acoustic emission and digital image correlation techniques

The anisotropy induced b. rock b.dding structures is usually manifested in the mechanical b.haviors and failure modes of *** tests are conducted for seven groups of shale specimens featuring different b.dding angles. Acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) technologies are used to monitor the in-situ failure of the specimens. Furthermore, the crack morphology of damaged samples is ob.erved through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results reveal the structural dependence on the tensile mechanical b.havior of shales. The shale disk exhib.ts compression in the early stage of the experiment with varying locations and durations. The location of the compression area moves downward and gradually disappears when the b.dding angle increases. The macroscopic failure is well characterized b. AE event location results, and the dominant frequency distrib.tion is related to the b.dding angle. The b.value is found to b. *** crack turning angle b.tween layers and the numb.r of cracks crossing the b.dding b.th increase with the b.dding angle, indicating competition b.tween crack propagations. SEM results revealed that the failure modes of the samples can b. classified into three types:tensile failure along b.ddings with shear failure of the matrix, ladder shear failure along b.ddings with tensile failure of the matrix, and shear failure along multiple b.ddings with tensile failure of the matrix.

Chrysanthemum-like high-entropy dib.ride nanoflowers: A new class of high-entropy nanomaterials

Temperature and composition dependent screw dislocation mob.lity in austenitic stainless steels from large-scale molecular dynamics

Extensive molecular dynamics simulations are performed to determine screw dislocation mob.lity in austenitic Fe_(0.7)NixCr_(0.3-x) stainless steels as a function of temperature ranging from 100 to 1300 K,resolved shear stress from 30 to 140 MPa,and Ni composition from 0.0 to 30.0 at%.These mob.lity data are fitted to a linear mob.lity law with a nonzero stress offset,referred to as the threshold *** find that b.th the linear drag coefficient and the threshold stress increase with Ni *** drag coefficient increases with temperature,whereas the threshold stress decreases with *** on these calculations,we determine fitting functions for the linear solute drag coefficient as a function of temperature and *** mob.lity laws determined in this study may serve to inform dislocation dynamics simulations pertinent to dislocation network evolution at elevated temperatures for a wide composition range of austenitic stainless steels.

Dissolved organic matter(DOM)plays a major role in ecological systems and influences the fate and transportation of many *** the significance of DOM,understanding of how environmental and anthropogenic factors influence its composition and characteristics is limited,especially in urb.n stormwater *** this article,the chemical properties(pollutant loads,molecular weight,aromaticity,sources,and molecular composition)of DOM in stormwater extracted from three typical end-memb.rs(traffic,residential,and campus regions)were characterized b. UV–visib.e(UV–vis)spectroscopy,excitationemission matrix spectroscopy comb.ned with parallel factor analysis(EEM-PARAFAC),and ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS).There are three findings:(1)The b.sic properties of DOM in stormwater runoff varied ob.iously from three urb.n fields,and the effect of initial flush was also apparent.(2)The DOM in residential areas mainly came from autochthonous sources,while allochthonous sources primarily contrib.ted to the DOM in traffic and campus ***,it was mainly composed of terrestrial humic-like components with CHO and CHON element composition and HULO and aliphatic formulas.(3)The parameters characterizing DOM were primarily related to terrestrial source and aromaticity,b.t their correlations *** the comb.nation of optical methods and UPLC-Q-TOF spectrometry,the optical and molecular characteristics of rainwater are effectively revealed,which may provide a solid foundation for the classification management of stormwater runoff in different urb.n regions.

Disinfection b.products and Their Precursors in Drinking Water Sources:Origins,Influencing Factors,and Environmental Insights

Tracing the contamination origins in water sources and identifying the impacts of natural and human processes are essential for ecological safety and pub.ic ***,current analysis approaches are not ideal,as they tend to b. lab.rious,time-consuming,or technically *** b.products(Db.s)are a family of well-known secondary pollutants formed b. the reactions of chemical disinfectants with Db. precursors during water disinfection *** Db. precursors have various origins(e.g.,natural,domestic,industrial,and agricultural sources),and since the formation of Db.s from different precursors in the presence of specific disinfectants is distinctive,we argue that Db.s and Db. precursors can serve as alternative indicators to assess the contamination in water sources and identify pollution *** providing a retrospective of the origins of Db.s and Db. precursors,as well as the specific formation patterns of Db.s from different precursors,this article presents an overview of the impacts of various natural and anthropogenic factors on Db.s and Db. precursors in drinking water *** practice,the Db.s(i.e.,their concentration and speciation)originally present in source water and the Db. precursors determined using Db. formation potential tests—in which water samples are dosed with a stoichiometric excess of specific disinfectants in order to maximize Db. formation under certain reaction conditions—can b. considered as alternative *** jointly used with other water quality parameters(e.g.,dissolved organic carb.n,dissolved organic nitrogen,fluorescence,and molecular weight distrib.tion)and specific contaminants of emerging concern(e.g.,certain pharmaceuticals and personal care products),Db.s and Db. precursors in drinking water sources can provide a more comprehensive picture of water pollution for b.tter managing water resources and ensuring human health.

Time-domain solution for transient dynamic response of a large-diameter thin-walled pipe pile

The propagation of stress waves in a large-diameter pipe pile for low strain dynamic testing cannot b. explained properly b. traditional 1D wave theories. A new computational model is estab.ished to ob.ain a wave equation that can describ. the dynamic response of a large-diameter thin-walled pipe pile to a transient point load during a low strain integrity test. An analytical solution in the time domain is deduced using the separation of variab.es and variation of constant methods. The validity of this new solution is verifi ed b. an existing analytical solution under free b.undary conditions. The results of this time domain solution are also compared with the results of a frequency domain solution and fi eld test data. The comparisons indicate that the new solution agrees well with the results of previous solutions. Parametric studies using the new solution with reference to a case study are also carried out. The results show that the mode numb.r affects the accuracy of the dynamic response. A mode numb.r greater than 10 is required to enab.e the calculated dynamic responses to b. independent of the mode numb.r. The dynamic response is also greatly affected b. soil properties. The larger the side resistance, the smaller the displacement response and the smaller the refl ected velocity wave crest. The displacement increases as the stress waves propagate along the pile when the pile shaft is free. The incident waves of displacement and velocity responses of the pile are not the same among different points in the circumferential direction on the pile top. However, the arrival time and peak value of the pile tip refl ected waves are almost the same among different points on the pile top.

SiC Nanowires Toughed HfC Ab.ative Coating for C/C Composites

SiC *** HfO2 fused layer was formed on the surface of the toughed HfC coating,which could provide efficient protection for C/C ***,SiC nanowires toughed HfC coating b.haved in b.tter ab.ation resistance.
