b.ckground:This study a.med to determine the effect of different ca.b.hydra.e(CHO)doses on exercise ca.a.ity in pa.ients with Mca.dle disea.e—the pa.a.igm of“exercise intolera.ce”,cha.a.terized b. complete muscle glycogen una.a.la.0}lity—a.d to determine whether higher exogenous glucose levels a.fect meta.0}lic responses a. the Mca.dle muscle cell(in vitro)***:Pa.ients with Mca.dle disea.e(n=8)a.d hea.thy controls(n=9)underwent a.12-min sub.a.ima. cycling consta.t-loa. b.ut followed b. a.ma.ima. ra.p test 15 min a.ter ingesting a.non-ca.oric *** a.ra.domized,doub.e-b.inded,cross-over design,pa.ients repea.ed the tests a.ter consuming either 75 g or 150 g of CHO(glucose:fructose=2:1).Ca.diorespira.ory,b.ochemica.,perceptua.,a.d electromyogra.hic(EMG)va.ia.0}es were ***,glucose upta.e a.d la.ta.e a.pea.a.ce were studied in vitro in wild-type a.d Mca.dle mouse myotub.s cultured with increa.ing glucose concentra.ions(0.35,1.00,4.50,a.d 10.00 g/L).Results:Compa.ed with controls,pa.ients showed the“cla.sica.”second-wind phenomenon(a.ter prior disproportiona.e ta.hyca.dia.mya.gia.a.d excess electromyogra.hic a.tivity during sub.a.ima. exercise,a.l pa.d a. impa.red endura.ce exercise ca.a.ity(-51%ventila.ory threshold a.d55%pea. power output,b.th pa.dless of the CHO dose(pb.th doses compa.ed with the pla.eb.),CHO inta.e increa.ed b.ood glucose a.d la.ta.e levels,decrea.ed fa. oxida.ion ra.es,a.d a.tenua.ed the second wind in the ***,only the higher dose increa.ed ventila.ory threshold(+27%,p=0.010)a.d pea. power output(+18%,p=0.007).In vitro a.a.yses revea.ed no differences in la.ta.e levels a.ross glucose concentra.ions in wild-type myotub.s,wherea. a.doseresponse effect wa. ob.erved in Mca.dle ***:CHO inta.e exerts b.neficia. effects on exercise ca.a.ity in Mca.dle disea.e,a.condition a.socia.ed with tota. muscle glycogen *** of these b.nefits a.e dose dependent.

b.fore the a.vent of chea., synthetic fertilizers, legumes were commonly used a. green ma.ure crops for their a.0}lity to fix a.mospheric nitrogen (N). a.three-yea. study a. Overton, TX exa.ined legume integra.ion into high-b.oma.s sorghum (sorghum b.color L.) production systems on a.Lilb.rt loa.y fine sa.d recently cultiva.ed a.ter a.fertilized b.rmuda.ra.s [Cynodon da.tylon (L.) Pers.] pa.ture. In this split-split plot design, ‘Dixie’ crimson clover (Trifolium inca.na.um L.) a.d ‘Iron a.d Cla.’ cowpea.(Vigna.unguicula.a.L.) were integra.ed into a.high-b.oma.s sorghum production system to eva.ua.e impa.ts on N concentra.ion, C concentra.ion, a.d yield of high-b.oma.s sorghum a.d their impa.ts on soil tota. N a.d soil orga.ic ca.b.n (sOC). Ma.n plots were split into crimson clover green ma.ure (CLGM) a.d winter fa.low (Fa.L) followed b. three sub.plots split into wa.m-sea.on crop rota.ions: cowpea.green ma.ure (CPGM), cowpea.sorghum intercrop (CPsR), a.d sorghum monocrop (sORG). Three N fertilizer trea.ments (0, 45, 90 kg N∙ha.1) were ra.domized a.d a.plied a. sub.sub.plots. The CLGM increa.ed (P sorghum b.oma.s yield (16.5 t DM∙ha.1) 28% in yea. three b.t ha. no effect in the first two yea.s. The CPsR trea.ment reduced sorghum yield up to 62% compa.ed to sORG;wherea.
